Does ABC 5, now re-branded as TV5, still stand a chance? Frankly, I don't like the new name.

Last March, ABC-5 informed PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that the company had entered into a “major blocktime agreement” with MPB Primedia, Inc., a Philippine corporation backed by Media Prima Berhad of Malaysia.

This agreement has resulted in a new look and a new target market for the broadcasting company owned by Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco. Starting August 9, ABC-5 will be known as TV5, a channel that promises to target “underserved demographic of 30 and below including those who are young at heart—generally the progressive Pinoys who are open to change and are willing to try new things and experiences.”

According to Christopher Sy, TV5 Chief Executive Officer, “We realize that our target market is an active segment that may not have the time to try to follow something on a daily basis. As such, our schedule is based more on “appointment” television with provisions for catch-up TV, allowing people the flexibility to watch our programs when it’s convenient for them.”

TV5 will offer various show genres such as reality, drama, variety, teens & toons, and movies.

“We think we can attract a sizeable audience by providing a fresh alternative to the country’s two major networks which seem to mirror each other’s programming. We hope to provide shows that are different and more relevant to a youthful Filipino audience,” said Sy.

The newly repositioned TV station will be broadcasting using a 120kW transmitter. It was recently launched to the trade industry through an event attended by more than 1,000 movers and shakers from the advertising business as well as the stars from the channel’s upcoming programs. The big trade launch showcased TV5’s new programming lineup, which was well received by the audience.

TV5 is a television channel brand of MPB Primedia, Inc., a Philippine domestic corporation, which entered into a long-term block airtime agreement with Associated Broadcast Company, which is headed by Mr. Cojuangco.

Tonyboy still CEO of TV5
MANILA, Philippines—Starting August 9, the network known since 1992 as Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC) 5, will be called TV5.

MPB Primedia Inc., local subsidiary of the Malaysian conglomerate Media Prima Berhad, entered into “a long-term block airtime agreement” with ABC 5 head Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco.

A source explained: “TV5 is the brand, but the corporate name is still ABC 5, and Tonyboy is still its CEO.”

A musical extravaganza airing on Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. will inaugurate the newly dolled up network.

In a statement, Christopher Sy, MPB Primedia CEO, said TV5 will air “innovative, relevant and spirited” programs. “We [hope to be] a fresh alternative to the country’s two major networks which seem to mirror each other’s programming,” said Sy.

According to a network insider, a show called “Chicklit,” (short for chick literature) to be produced by Unitel Pictures, is included in the lineup of new shows. “Talentadong Pinoy,” a reality show, is another. “Hush Hush,” to be hosted by actress-director Laurice Guillen, “Pinoy’s Scariest Challenge” and “Batang X,” are also on the list.

“There will be only 30 minutes of newscast every day,” the source added. “The rest is entertainment.”

TV5 was introduced to the industry through an event held July 25 at the SMX of the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

The source added that “major block airtime deal” meant MPB Primedia Inc. “bought practically all available airtime” from ABC 5.

Suppliers

ABC 5 will produce shows for MPB Primedia as part of their production service agreement. “But there will be other project suppliers, like Tony Gloria’s Unitel,” said the source.

Thirdly, under a management consultancy agreement, MPB Primedia will manage the sale of ABC 5 airtime.

Sy, a Filipino national, was formerly managing director of EMI Music Philippines. He also served as chair of the Philippine Association of the Recording Industry.

          TV5 na pala 'to come August 9. Seen snippets of ABC5's previous shows while watching KERYGMA TV and how time passed quickly. By the way, I wonder if this 'show' will be carryover when the station becomes TV5.

I'm surprised to observe that:

1. That ABC5 has a loyal following, albeit a rather small one.
2. People look back at ABC5 with a hint of nostalgia and even fondness.
3. And while there are cynics, (how many times will abc relaunch!?) there are people who are actually
    anticipating the relaunch of the station.

But to be fair, they did have entertaining shows--Tropang Trumpo, Eezy Dancing, Wow Mali and Ispup come to mind--and they did bring in such canned shows as Quantum Leap, Friends and Frasier.

Remember "The Big Leap?"

But to be fair, they did have entertaining shows--Tropang Trumpo, Wow Mali and Ispup come to mind--and they did bring in such canned shows as Quantum Leap, Friends and Frasier.

        ABC5 were indeed enjoying ratings with this shows (FRIENDS, etc.) during that time. TROPANG TRUMPO for me was their biggest triumph in terms of local shows. Had also tried to catch KERYGMA TV last Tuesday and was no show but the billiards game. Had doubts if this one will be carryover come August 9. :(

MANILA, Philippines—Despite the infusion of capital by a Malaysian corporation, ABC 5 — now called TV5 — remains a Filipino TV station, according to new network boss Christopher Sy.

ABC 5 chief operating officer Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco recently entered into a long-term block airtime agreement with MPB Primedia Inc., a local subsidiary of the Malaysian conglomerate Media Prima Berhad.

The block airtime agreement meant that Primedia bought “all available airtime” from ABC 5, a network insider explained.

Under Primedia, TV5 aims to air “innovative, relevant and spirited” programs, according to Sy, Primedia’s CEO.

“This is a local TV station and should be locally run,” Sy declared. “The Malaysians have left all the decision-making to the team, which is entirely local. TV5 has nothing Malaysian about it.”

Sy added that with the channel’s new programming came the need for the network to change its brand name. The network had been known as Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC) 5 since 1992.

“The re-branding was necessary to more effectively communicate these changes to the public,” Sy said. “We’re going to be very different from the old ABC 5. The new name, new look and new logo were very deliberate.”

The young network boss gave Inquirer Entertainment an interview last week, answering questions on TV5’s block-timing contract and target market, and its spanking new 120kw transmitter.


What is the duration of the block-timing contract with ABC 5?

We don’t want to get into the details, but it’s definitely more than 10 years.

You are launching at a time when the economy is not so good.

Times are tough these days, but it will not stay like this forever. I think if we effectively build our brand and gain our audience, the money part will take care of itself.

Do you have advertisers’ commitment?

There are a lot of conversations going on. We’re pretty optimistic. The presentation (launch) befitted our personality. Our logo is younger, less serious than the others. Around the number 5 is a shaking television. Our slogan is: “Shake Mo TV Mo.” This means we will shake your perceptions of TV. We want people to see that TV programming is not just what ABS-CBN and GMA 7 want us to watch.

How are your programs different from the current TV fare?

I think the two networks are going after the same market. If you’re someone who’s active, someone who is out of the house most of the time, you would want variety. You don’t like to be watching “Dyesebel” every single night. We offer programs that are fresher and more tailored for our target market, which is a little younger than ABS’ or GMA7’s. Our shows are snappier, faster-paced.

The old ABC 5 catered to an older audience—between 25 and 40. Eventually, because of the sports programming, it skewed a little to the male gender. Our target is gender neutral.

The network recently bought a 120kw transmitter.

ABC 5 realized that one of the things that kept the network back traditionally was the poor signal. To move ahead, Mr. Cojuangco said he really needed to invest in a world-class transmitter and good infrastructure. It’s a brand-new transmitter from Italy. It’s at par with what other networks use.

Studio 23 appears to be targeting the same market as yours. What’s your edge?

Studio 23 has a lot of canned English programs. Our edge is a large slate of local programming. Even our canned shows will be dubbed in Filipino.

Are you not having difficulty getting stars for your shows, since they are mostly under contract with the competition?

We’re lucky that some established names have agreed to do shows for us— Ryan Agoncillo, Iya Villania and Jomari Yllana, among others. These people are committed on a per-show basis. Lucy Torres will continue to appear on “Shall We Dance,” which will now feature not just ballroom dancing but also hip-hop and street-dancing for the younger viewers.
