Philips DVP3980K/98 Upscaling Player
« on: Sep 13, 2008 at 02:20 PM »
I saw this player in Western Trinoma last night.

Listed price was P3,990, but I think it was on sale for only P2,990.

Anyone here have this player?

I'm considering getting this for the lcd in the living room (which has a prehistoric Pioneer connected to it via component); which is why I wanted to get some feedback sana from the people here.

Problem is, I can't remember how much it was actually selling. The brochure I have says that it costs P3,990 -- but when I asked if I could use my credit card's Paylite, the salesperson told me that it would only cost me P495/month for 6-months (which would total around P2,970). Kaya di ko alam kung naka-sale ba siya or not. Or kung mali lang dinig ko sa monthly cost.

Nagmamadali kasi ako last night as my baby was crying in his stroller already.

I just bought this player to pair with my 32" LG plasma.  Although it doesn't have any USB port to play Divx,MPEG files via a flash drive, it plays downloaded files burned in DVD-RW flawlessly.  The time to burn files in a DVDR/RW is about the same as transferring the files from your HDD to a flash drive so it isn't really a loss not having the usb port.   It has very good upscaling capabilities and better than my HDD player.  Philips is known to very versatile in playing p***** and scratched discs which is one of the plus factors in buying one.

Bought it for P3990 via CC divided into 6 months 0% interest.  If bought cash only P200 is taken out from the regular price.

This is so far the cheapest branded HDMI DVD player I saw.  There is a Sansui upscaling 1080p HDMI player with USB for P3k if you consider this one as branded.

I also saw this player. One thing i noticed, wala akong nakita na DTS logo/DTS out, does it mean it can't play DTS sounds?

Hmmm....that's weird.  Tried browsing in the manual and there is no mention of a DTS pass through.  Only DD and AC3.  It has digital audio out through coaxial though.  I will try to experiment later if it will pass DTS signals to my receiver.  I just hooked it up to my LG plasma straight through HDMI at the moment.

This was also raised in the Philips 5986 Thread:

http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=67221.0

Out of the box, the 5986 does not pass through DTS, but after you upgrade its software, DTS can be played. (This is confirmed by other members in the thread -- I can vouch for this also as I have the 5986)

So, is it safe to assume that the same is applicable to the 3980?

Thanks for the short review nerve!

I am really considering getting one for the Panasonic lcd in our living room.

I just need to convince my wife that both the bedroom (already using a Philips 5986) and living room (using a very old Pioneer player) need to have upscaling dvd players! Good luck to me on that one! ;D

Tried hooking it yesterday to my receiver and it can pass DTS signals to the receiver through the coaxial output!  ;D  BTW, the firmware is upgradeable.  ;D

I tried setting the video output to 1080p through HDMI to my AX100 and I find the PQ very good! I recommend this player to those who are on the lookout for an affordable upscaling branded DVD player.  It is colored black so it will also go well with your black HT gears.

Cheers!  :D

Yes to all!   ;D Philips (aside from Pioneer ) is one of the branded players which are not so choosy on discs even burned, p@#$ed DVDs.  Samsung recently is catching up on this aspect with their new models.

Pat, upscales through HDMI lang.  I compared the PQ compared to my Pio DV400 in my 90 inch PJ screen and I find the quality with the Philips better.  That's just me though.  ;)

For P3,990  c.c. for 6 mos.  P665/mo. Western Trinoma.  You can never go wrong with dis hdmi dvd plyr 1080p upscaler.
The thing i like about dis plyr is der zoom 1 & ab repeat function. It has a different bit rate function compared to Pio 600.

Philips 3980 bit rate goes fr. 0 to 100 ( i think, can't find it in d manual)
Pioneer 600 bit rate fr. 0 to 10, 11, 12. . . . .

who's better between the two? i think dey are both winners.  chao!

btw, i bought my D&S hdmi cable 2 M, with 2 Ferrite Cores at Handyman Tri P649. Ace Hard avai din.
CDR KING sells hdmi cable 1.8M P200.
ur choice.

^ Buds, naunahan mo ako mag post ng software upgrade ah  ;D

Anyway, according to Philips after upgading the software your unit should have:
   Improve overall set performance
   Improve HDMI Compatibility
