ANG PINAKA-PATOK NA OFW MOVIES (SEPTEMBER 21, 2008)
« on: Sep 21, 2008 at 08:17 PM »

After listing top Dolphy movies last week, ANG PINAKA has come up once again with topic on pinoy movies. This time as ANG PINAKA-PATOK NA OFW MOVIES. Panelists were: Atty. Francis Cruz a.k.a. PDVD member 'oggsmoggs' (Film Critic & Blogger), Rica Arevalo (Filmmaker), Cenon Palomares (Writer, Instructor - UP Film Institute), Lilit Reyes (Palanca Award-Winning Scriptwriter) & Prof. Wendell Capili (College of Arts and Letters, U.P. Diliman).

     Milagros contemplates...

                                ...while Sarah complains.

    The list:

    10. DUBAI (2005)
      9. MISS X (1980)
      8. MILAN (2004)
      7. BATANG WEST SIDE (2001)
      6. SANA MAULIT MULI (1995)
      5. AMERICAN ADOBO (2001)
      4. THE FLOR CONTEMPLACION STORY (1995)
      3. CAREGIVER (2008) - What an ending. Felt like a spoiler actually.
      2. 'MERIKA (1984) - My top choice
      1. ANAK (2000) - blame it on Star Cinema for spoofing (their own movie) and using one of the highlights in ANG TANGING INA. Now, it's the latter I'm being reminded of whenever Vilma utter the 'sigarilyo' line.

Not much choices for this kind of theme despite the fact that Filipinos are all over the world, so this pretty much sums up all of our OFW movies. Thank God for Star Cinema. ::)

The shortlist didn't have Batang West Side, Bagong Bayani, Rigodon, etc. in it. I pushed for Batang West Side (making it my #1 choice), and put Rigodon as #5. I couldn't include Bagong Bayani since I haven't seen the movie (but I made a comment, which wasn't edited out, about the Flor Contemplacion movies --- Bagong Bayani, being the "better" movie, and Delia Maga Story being absolutely bad. It was a fun experience being interviewed for the show...

Thanks for your thoughts oggsmoggs. I believe BAGONG BAYANI is far more deserving than some that made it on the final list.
You look like having a nice time being interviewed. :)

Glad to see Bagong Bayani was remembered. Far as I'm concerned, it occupies number two spot on that list, after Batang West Side. Well--arguably Batang West Side is an immigration movie, not an OFW movie. Gloria Diaz was an OFW at one point, but became a citizen; beside, she's not the main character. The two main characters--the victim and the detective investigating his death, those ARE immigrants.

The list is hazy, they entitled it Ang Pinaka-Patok na OFW movies, but included immigrant tales (American Adobo, etc.). Bagong Bayani should be released on DVD...

Olive Lamasan's Sana Maulit Muli (1995) is quite a remarkable movie. It deservedly win the Best Picture Urian. Seen it on its initial theatre release, and years later on TFC, and still find it a moving film.

They missed Elwood Perez' MIRACLE OF LOVE & PINAY AMERICAN STYLE.

While Vilma was being chased by the immigration authorities in PINAY AMERICAN STYLE as a TNT, Elwood shot it in guerilla filmmaking style without permits in New York. All of his overseas films was shot without permits.

Sana Maulit Muli for me is the best OFW movie.
