GMA for me. Simple lang. No frills. Kaya hwag magtaka kung bakit ganyan ang news ng Star as far as ABS is concerned. Mahirap kapag hindi neutral- hindi nagiging objective.  Definitely, hindi magiging objective ang ABS as far as politics is concerned.

Your allegations about the Philippine Star is very far fetched.  Just FYI this article also came out on the Inquirer and mas grabe pa nga ang negative comments sa GMA.  And I always read the Star and daming negative write-ups when it comes to ABS-CBN kaya I really doubt what your saying about the Star have any merit.

BTW I would have also posted the article on the Inquirer but it did not came out on their website maybe because they in partnership with GMA.

BTW can you please sight some instances na kumampi and dos kay Cory just curious.  If that where true then please explain to me why ABS is also accused of siding with Erap who we all know have been asked by Cory to step down.

;D Hahaha, I think the one who posted the news article just got his source from Star. Actually not only Philippine Star had this story but almost every newspaper in town from tabloid to broadsheet! Hindi natin maiiwasan ang pagkakaroon ng pagkiling ng mga t.v. stations. Looked at RJTV 29, Channel2 and 7 hindi ba sila ang nag-cover nang Edsa 2 while Net 25 covered the Edsa 3?both stations particularly channel 2 & 7 kung sa showbiz blind article you will know easily na talents ng kabilang istasyon ang kanilang tinutukoy.I think instead of mag-aaway -away itong dalawang istasyon ,They should get their acts together.Sometimes nakakasawa na yung mga awayan na iyan! kaya looked at Philippine television parang pulitika na! Compare our t.v stations with other countries!

Well, stations in other countries are no better off. Just look at MSNBC and FOX News. Both stations are fighting like drunken whores over who has the more credible news facility. They even make TV ads attacking each other.

Really?  Thats interesting, how did the ads go?  I know that in the US there is more freedom to mention your competition's name in your ads.

Ek-Ek what are you trying to say in your post?  I'm the one who posted that news article, and yes I did get it from the Philippine Star as my post have stated.

It all started with the Geraldo Rivera controversy where he was accused of showing to the public highly confidential military information. MSNBC fired off an ad that say they are not Un-American like Fox. Fox, then fired back by making an ad based on MSNBC's firing of Peter Arnett.

It was just pettiness and immaturity on the two networks. Much like what we have here.

Yeah I know, but in the world of media and showbiz semantics is not just that it could mean millions, a law suit and a trademark.  ;)

So you mean to say ABS has the patent on the phrase "Current Affairs"?  ;D ;D ;D

Market leadership not the issue, says GMA Network

The Philippine Star 05/13/2003

GMA Network, Inc. said yesterday that market leadership was not the issue in the complaint it has filed against ABS-CBN and three cable companies before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court on May 6 but was grounded on its unwavering stand against unfair competition.

The company earlier filed a P12-million civil case for damages against ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., Central CATV Inc. (SkyCable), Philippine Home Cable Holdings, Inc. (Home Cable), and Pilipino Cable Corp.(Sun Cable).

Reacting to ABS-CBN's statement branding the network's lawsuit as an "act of desperation", GMA Network said in a statement that " market leadership is not an issue; unfair competition and trade practices are the main contentions of the suit."

GMA said it is precisely because the playing field is not even that it has decided to file the charges on monopoly /interlocking ownership of Sky Cable and ABS-CBN by the Lopez group and the Lopezes’ majority holdings in Beyond Cable (the merger of SkyCable and Home Cable).

It added that contrary to ABS-CBN's statement, GMA's ratings and audience shares in Metro Manila have been steadily increasing. It said that according to the latest AGB report, GMA&'s total day rating in April was at the same level as ABS-CBN's ratings of 14 percent. GMA and ABS-CBN's audience shares in April were also at the same level at 37 percent.

In terms of airtime revenues, GMA's performance during the first quarter compared with last years performance is better with a growth rate of 65 percent compared to ABS-CBN's 30 percent. GMA's net income of P406 million is very much ahead of ABS-CBN's P107 million in 2002, it added..

It also noted that GMA's programs have also gained support from advertisers. According to ACNielsen (PMS Monitoring Data), GMA's total day comparative minutes loading from January to April 19, 2003 was 22,749 minutes compared to ABS-CBN's 21,080 minutes for the same period. GMA increased its loading by 63 percent as of April 19 compared with ABS-CBN's 19 percent growth rate for the same period, it added.

Huh???  Who said that?  As far as I know words can't be patented only slogans and titles.

What I said is what I have written nothing more.  You can read it again if you like.

 ;)

The latest press release of GMA is really confusing, they have said it a million times before that the unilateral reassignment of their channel affected their ratings and this is unfair competition as they say, now they are saying that their ratings even increased and even at par with ABS-CBNs, ang GULO nila they're contradicting they're own statement and complaint.

How can it be unfair competition if it benefits them or does not affect them negatively - and in the broadcasing industry ratings is the bottomline.  So how can it not be about ratings if they are talking about unfair competition, we all know that ratings is what competition means in broadcasting.  GMA must be honest about things parang naman kasi linoloko nila ang tao, we all know what they have said in the past and now they are doing a 180 degrees turn around to save face.

Mr Big Boy,

GMA seems to be improving its production values, especially in the Public Affairs Department. I like their documentaries. They appear to have more depth and heart.
Of course, it is mostly drowned by voice overs and blotched by standuppers but it is better than in ABS-CBN where sensationalism, shallowness and dumbness abound.

Do you think ABS-CBN, especially its News and whatever Affairs is sliding down the abyss of crass commercialism? Do you think they can outshine the Kapuso people?

Kung ikaw ang nasa ABS, how would you straighten out their act and beat the Kapuso pipol?

Here is what Beyond Cable (Sky and Home Cable) have to say, this appeared on PDI on May 12, 2003:

ACCORDING TO BEYOND CABLE
Drop in GMA-7 ratings not
due to channel change

By Abigail L. Ho
Philippine Daily Inquirer

DOMINANT cable operator Beyond Cable Holdings Inc. said the recent transfer of GMA Network Inc.'s channel position in its cable systems was not the cause of the broadcasting firm's drop in ratings.

According to AC Nielsen's Peoplemeter viewership report, the audience share of GMA Network in cabled homes in Dagupan and the rest of Metro Manila (including Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, Rizal and parts of Pampanga) dropped significantly from November 2002 to mid-March 2003, even if these areas were not affected by the channel repositioning.

In Dagupan, its audience share dropped by 5.3 percentage points to 13.7 percent in mid-March from 19 percent in November last year.

For the areas falling under the "rest of Metro Manila," GMA Network's audience share likewise dropped several notches to 24.7 percent in mid-March from 27 in November 2002.

"(Beyond Cable) did not implement any channel changes in the provincial areas, and yet in some of those areas, GMA's ratings also declined," Beyond Cable marketing head Joy Santos said in a statement.

GMA Network had earlier filed an administrative case with the National Telecommunications Commission and a civil case with the Quezon City regional trial court against rival firm ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. and Lopez-affiliated cable firms SkyCable Central CATV Inc., Philippine Home Cable Holdings Inc. and Pilipino Cable Corp.

SkyCable and Home Cable earlier consolidated to form Beyond Cable. Pilipino Cable was the firm's provincial arm.

The cases were filed on the grounds of monopoly and signal degradation due mainly to channel repositioning.

GMA Network said the transfer of its channel position from 12 to 14 in the Beyond Cable and Pilipino Cable systems led to so much signal distortion that its ratings fell in affected areas.

But Santos stressed that "the channel changes were meant to provide better video and audio quality to all broadcast stations in line with marketing thrusts to entice more non-cabled homes to subscribe to cable TV."

Kung ikaw ang nasa ABS, how would you straighten out their act and beat the Kapuso pipol?

Well I agree with you on that, they have a good news and public affairs team maybe because of the influence and example set by Cheche Lazaro who by the way once headed the News Dept of ABS-CBN.

Another thing that might be the reason is the culture on Kapuso's workplace, which I heard is more relax and friendly making it more conducive to cooperation and team work.  In ABS-CBN kasi masyado ang competition which is good to a certain degree but it reached to that point na nagaaway-away ng ang mga taga news dept ng dos and it's self destructing.  Because of the fierce internal competition news people there, just to keep ahead with one another will resort to sleazy products that will attract ratings ang get them the managements goodwill, I think that culture should be change.

Now that Luchi Cruz Valdez is back with ABS-CBN I hope that she can turn things around and make her dept which is the News dept dish out more quality oriented shows like their very own correspondents and pipol.

One thing great with what ABS-CBN did was to make news and public affairs programs very viable and invested huge amount of money on equipment, human resources and infrastructure for news and public affairs.  Before the return of ABS-CBN no one really paid attention and importance to news on TV now Networks are investing money on news and ABS-CBN is responsible for this trend it was the one who improved new organization system in the country and up to now pushing the limit by installing different news centers around the world.

Tnx Mr Big Boy,

you are a very astute observer. i'm sure the networks will benefit from your observations. do you work for any of them?

another question, do you really expect ABS-CBN or GMA to tell us the truth in many things, given the limitations of TV (advertisers, politics, and all)?

for American Shows like Will and Grace, Alias, Smallville etc. - Studio 23 Rocks...

For Variety Shows, News, Investigative Journalism - Definitely GMA.

Filipino Sitcoms, Talk Shows, Telenovelas(K. Hermosa) - ABSCBN .  But I'm trying to boycott the station for being such idiots, the Lopezes I mean.

Innovative Shows and other AMerican sitcoms - ABC 5

Channel 4, 9, 13 - They all suck

Yes, What I am pointing out is that some people thought that Philippine Star is the only one which tries to cover the said" flame wars" between the two networks. So I posted that lahat ng diaryo ay mayroon article na ganyan.

Patok sa me pre-teens and teenagers. In fact, nilipat na yung slot sa 5:30 in anticipation of the opening of classes. Marami kasing estudyanto yung sumusubaybay. Kuha nga ako ng mga bagong labas na posters sa Tutuban para maibenta. Buti pa mga anak ko, kilala lahat yung mga pangalan ng mga characters!

Of course, putting it head to head with Xtra Xtra would test its ratings hold on the 5:30 PM slot. As you have observed, marami nang inilagay dun sa slot na yon, Bediones and Quiambao still reign supreme.

Reposting my reply to the other related thread:

Regarding the ratings, admittedly, lamang pa rin ABS sa gabi (tele-serye) at  hapon (tele-novela). GMA naman ang me hawak ng tanghali (hirap pa rin ang MTB sa EB). Late nites after the teleserye, lipat ang marami sa GMA kasi lamang yung comedies nila!

So ABS tries to improve on those slots na lamang ang GMA while GMA tries to get the formula to get ahead on the PM and early evening slots. That's the spirit of competition.

Bottom line here, you don't improve your ratings by suing anybody! You improve your programs, you improve your signal and with the DC super antenna, you  can improve your reception (even GMA 7). So bili na, P600 lang from me   (Sorry for the hardsell   ;D  )

Just a clarification regarding Extra-Extra reigning supreme all the time causing the cancellation of the other programs.  Thats not true at all, Balitang-K of Miss Sanchez which was copied by Extra-Extra was not cancelled because natalo sila sa ratings.  Infact Extra-Extra never defeated Balitang K sa ratings ever it was cancelled because Korina have to do TV-Patrol when Noli run for the Senate same as with Kris Aquino her program was cancelled because she was promoted like Korina to the primetime slot program Game Ka Na Ba.  If Extra-Extra is doing so good I think the host should have been promoted to a primetime show just like their rival host kaso hindi eh.  ;D

Heres another one from The Philippine Star:

GMA Network asks NTC to cancel licenses of Sky, Sun, Home Cable

By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes
Publish Date: [Monday, May 19, 2003]

GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) has asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to suspend and eventually cancel the licenses of cable companies Central CATV (SkyCable), Inc., Pilipino Cable Corp. (Sun Cable) and Philippine Home Cable Holdings, Inc. (Home Cable).

In its motion filed last May 13, GMA alleged that despite an order from the NTC, the three cable TV stations still refuse to return complainant’s VHF station back to Channel 12 and its UHF station back to Channel 27.

The said motion was filed pursuant to the NTC’s decision rendered last April 25 which found SkyCable to have violated the provisions of NTC Memorandum Circular No. 4-08-88 by arbitrarily changing channel assignments of KBP members’ TV stations. GMA complained about its transfer from Channel 12 to Channel 14.

SkyCable was ordered by NTC, among others to carry GMA’s television signals on its CATV system on the channel numbers at which their stations are transmitting and to cease from arbitrarily changing channel assignments without advance written notice to complainant KBP members’ TV stations, the public and the approval by the NTC.

The NTC also said in its decision that since the issue is enforcement of NTC MC 4-08-88, the decision becomes a precedent that is binding upon all cable TV operators who are similarly situated.

The said decision being immediately executory, GMA alleged in its motion that it wrote SkyCable, Home Cable and Pilipino Cable a letter demanding that the latter’s respective cable systems restore GMA’s VHF TV station to Channel 12 and its UHF station to Channel 27. A copy of the said decision was furnished by GMA to SkyCable, Home Cable and Pilipino Cable together with the said letter.

GMA alleged that despite notice to the said cable operators, the latter failed to heed the NTC decision as well as MC 4-08-88.

GMA asked the NTC to impose the appropriate sanctions against the cable companies, including the officers and directors, as well as the electronic and communications engineers (ECE) responsible for the operation and maintenance of the cable TV systems of Sky Cable, Home Cable, and Pilipino Cable.

Specifically, the complainant asked for the imposition fines upon the cable companies at the rate of P200 per day per TV station rechanneled unlawfully since March 22, 1999 until compliance;

It also asked the NTC to cause the filing of the necessary complaints for indirect contempt and violation of the penal provisions of the Public Service Act and the Radio Control Law (penalties range from a fine of P2,000 to P20,000, or imprisonment of two years to five years, or both, in the discretion of the court) by the directors and officers, including the electronic and communication engineers, responsible for the cable systems’ operations and maintenance.

Indie Boi,

You make an excellent point but I have to thwart your attention to the fact that ABS carries the local station Studio23 as well.  A station that carries a lot of excellenct American shows...

But to address the question, I think that both stations have their fair share of strengths and weaknesses...

Ex.

SOP Rules over ASAP
Eat Bulaga reigns supreme over MTB
the NEWS and investigative journalism shows of GMA are far superior.

BUt then again...

ABS Teleseryes are number 1 in all time slots...
Game K N B is the only game show left...
Sitcoms, ABS has the slight edge...
Plus, ABS carries Studio23.

Regardless of these facts though, I'm still consciously trying to boycott the latter... Most of their stars are jumping fence because they are mean hungry blood suckers...

That's not true, the perception that the stars of ABS-CBN is jumping fence is a misconception, the truth is, generally these stars where dropped by ABS-CBN because they are not contributing anymore and their talent fees are way above what they really worth.  Let me site an example; Pops Fernandez is overrated she demands higher talent fees and additional shows now why would ABS-CBN give in to her demands if she can't even beat Janice de Belen and Gelli when she hosted "Morning Girls" even her and Martin's concert TV special was a big dissapointment it got the lowest rating ever on that time slot.  She is not an exceptional singer nor a good actress so ABS-CBN decided not to keep her anymore it was not as if she just decided to tranfer post haste.

The funny thing is GMA keeps on getting the services of these stars havent they learn anything yet.  Are they just trying to project an image of being a winner where infact these stars are all loosers?  Look what happened to Mel Tiangco did she delivered?  What about Richar Gomez are his shows rating high?  It's not about stars anymore, shows concepts and creativity is what brings in the ratings nowadays.

I just found out that Freddie Garcia, ABS-CBN President, and the one responsible for making the network no.1 after its reopening in 1986, is retiring this year.

ABS-CBN president may 'stay
on or act as consultant'

Inquirer News Service

SO WHO will replace ABS-CBN president Freddie M. Garcia, who is retiring in July when he turns 60?

Executive vice president Charo Santos-Concio is said to be being considered for the post, but there are said to be other names in the short list: sales and marketing executive Nick Gabunada, business development and special projects executive Jose Ramon "Monchet" Olives and senior vice president for integrated engineering group Ruben "Bon-Bon" Jimenez.

Vice president for corporate and legal affairs Maloli Manalastas said retirement is indeed a company policy, "but ABS-CBN management has yet to sit down on this matter."

She said retirement is automatic once an employee reaches the age of 60.

"The question now is to whether management, particularly president Gabby Lopez, would extend Mr. Garcia's term," Manalastas pointed out.

"It is also possible that management would hire him as a consultant," she added.

Manalastas said she knows of several ABS-CBN executives who after retiring stayed on as consultants, like the late Rolly Cruz, who was consultant for the Metro Basketball Association (MBA) and the Sarimanok News Network (SNN).

Manalastas said she has no idea why the names of Santos-Concio, Gabunada, Olives and Jimenez came up.

"It seems the people are too excited," she said.

But she said it is not puzzling if management would pick any one from the batch.

"I think all of them are responsible leaders," she said. "For them to have reached their current positions, it means they are very competent and have contributed enough to the company."

I have a feeling its Charo Santos

GMA

Even a lot of ad agencies want to place their TVCs here and special launches! idiots ka-deal ang mga taga-ABS-CBN - sa GMA alaga.

Also when it comes to innovation - GMA ang panalo. ABS-CBN gaya-gaya!

Meron pa yata nung game show na si Arnel Ignacio ang host sa GMA. Game Ka Na Ba for me is the boring alternative. So fake.

Kailangan ng kalaban yung Game ka na Ba ng Dos. It would be boring kung tumagal pa na yun lang ang game show na pwedeng panoorin.

There is still something to watch to... at least, unless you don't have a care in OUR national events.

If you're referring to the news shows that give as much airtime to showbiz chismis, "tabloid" news, and Mark Logan's irritating and nonsensical reports, thanks but no thanks.

I'd rather read a newspaper or visit news websites. With these types of media I get the NEWS.
