Wonder how they consider 'Essential'. It's not the film per se, as Razzies champion Showgirls is on the list. Special features included in DVD? But then, they lump most (save for 2) Criterions together in the 50 years of Janus set, which consists mostly of single disc /film only version , where better Criterion editions are available. Anyway, as with any list, it's arbitrary. That said...

Owned quite a few. Upwards of 40. Some like Raging Bull included in boxset, mix of R1/R3 with The Godfather in R2. Most Warner SE in R3.

But at least two of those included on Empire's list are due for improved releases soon - Metropolis and Sunset Boulevard. Not to mention the uber set like Casablanca that Warner will be releasing this Christmas...

What did they miss? Those numbered Walt Disney Treasures (only Silly Symphonies made the list), Snow White PE and Beauty and The Beast PE is more worthy than the included 101 Dalmatians PE, Planet Earth, Oldboy tin...
