Group Buy EGREAT EG-M31B
« on: Sep 30, 2008 at 11:23 AM »
Gentlemen,

After the resounding results of the EB shootout last Saturday (Sept 27/08) at sir Mark's humble abode, we are organizing a group buy that would reap a substantial discount provided there would be a good number of buyers for EGREAT EG-M31B:

Package:
EGREAT EG-M31B bundled with an INTERNAL 1TB HDD

Original price is 20K.
Please add your name to the list if you are interested. We "hope" to complete the list within a week's time from today or as soon as possible.
The "discount" will depend on the "number of buyers" and most definitely, on "payment terms".

Warranty is 18 months.
Buyers will have the privilege of unlimited downloads from the store where item will be purchased from.

For any inquiries on the egreat 31B, You can PM Richie See aka Gren of Pinoydvd or visit this multiply site:http://ehome.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Egreat_EG-M31B

Thanks.

Marvin, the unit alone is P14k. With an internal 500 gb hdd, it is P16k. Sulit na to get it with 500 gb hdd. Yun ang ginawa ko.

Mga bro, just my 10cents on the HDD partner of your EG. Two things, first - invest in a eSATA drive given the mind-blowing speed transfer (makes USB look like Pentium 1 generation). Second, get a very largest drive you can afford - believe me you'll need it.

Personally, I've lost thousands of pesos in re-selling a 'just right' HDD which I quickly outgrew given the space demands of the newer files/applications nowadays.  If you get a 'just-enough-for-your-requirements' type of capacity, believe me you'll be selling it on the pre-owned market in a couple of months - lugi ka pa in the end.  Strongly suggest you get something 1.5- 2x your requirement.

Bro jackryan even shares his similar view on investing ahead of the curve - he's now going for his 2nd 2Tb na ata - looks like bitin pa ( http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=49072.msg875906#msg875906 ).  Bottomline is that you will need an abundance of space in your arsenal very soon if you go the NMT (network media tank) route.

On an average, a 1Tb would equate to around 100-160 titles depending on the rip (1080p or 720p).
Most of the suppliers in PDVD have over 200+ titles... and counting. From my experience, I wanted to get ALL pero talagang di kasya lahat and ang hirap mag-tanggal ng titles.  What do you prioritize - yung di mo pa napapanood or yung mga catalog titles na 'must-collect' even if you have a BD disc na of that?  Hirap talaga mag desisyon mga bro.

Each 1080p titles eats up around 8gig and each 720p around half of that.  Do the math and factor in your upcoming 'voracity' for this new and lucrative HD hobby and I can only hope you make a nice solid decision.

Just my humble opinion mga sir, hope you don't end up losing more (in the long run) in an attempt to save (in the short term).

Cheers!   ;)

500gb for 2k??  Thats unheard of.   Thats e- great deal.  ;D ;D

1.  Sa mga meron na egreat....how do you transfer the files from a PC to the internal drive in the egreat??  thru network?  or pwede rin thru USB?
2.  Can the egreat power MyPassport Hard Disc thru USB?   I use one kasi in playing newly downloaded MKVs.

@Marl1

You are right jas.  Thats why pili lang pina load ko MKVs to save some space.   Meron na available na internal hard drive na 1.5 TB.   I think pupunta rin ako dun.

Hi Marl1.  Why did you sell your smaller HDDs instead of keeping them?

I collect hard drives;  internal and external.  Whatever I got from previous purchases, I just keep and whenever I run out of disk space, I back-up files already watched in DVD-Rs and/or buy another hard drive.

eSATA is only relevant if you're transferring files between hard drives.  It won't make any difference in terms of mkv playback or during downloading of the files.

Reality check:   A 1TB hard drive can be filled up to 950GB only and as mentioned by Marl_1, should fit about 150 titles of mixed 720p and 1080p.  If you're talking of movies, that's about  150 x 2 = 300 hours of viewing time.  If it's intermittent viewing as in the case of porn, a 2 hour movie can stretch indefinitely.   ;D  If you're talking of high def TV series and documentaries, thats 950/1.1 = approximately 860 hours. Whether it be 300 or 860, that in my opinion, is a LOT of hours for any person leading a normal (busy) life.    So if you're going to set aside 300 to 860 hours of your valuable time and slouch in your living room or bedroom or Inday's room, you'd better be selective of the content I guess.

Back to topic.  The extra 2K for a 500GB internal drive filled with data is a STEAL, especially if you haven't got the data yet in your current collection.

2. Yes

hi bro, well my desktop was becoming pretty cluttered already with numerous HDDs; don't want to replicate this oversight in my new EG set-up. Preferred a minimalist look so less is more for me.  ;)

hehe, tama bro.  Hirap talaga mamili ng titles actually - parang nice to have lahat (kahit back-up our BD collections). Am thinkin' with more people jumpin' into MNTs, there would be corresponding exponential increase in 'software' demand and more (FREE) titles are gonna be sprawling all over the place. Hmmm... 1.5Tb is lookin' pretty viable at this point.  ::)

mga pre, nung nag test ba kayo, maingay ba yung fan nya talaga like what others are saying? or ok lang naman? yung iba kasi even disconnects the fan. Also, how is this holding up against defects or problems? yung A110 kasi medyo madaming nag RMA or having problems sa forum board nila saying that it powers down and doesnt turn on anymore, it hangs, etc. Yung egreat ba kamusta in that aspect?

Here are some inputs from Jas who got Egreat almost immediately right after the EB:
(copied right off this thread Marl_5)

Quick notes on the EG-31B:
Pros:
1. Superb Pic quality - rivals my BD player output as well (nuff said  )
2. Obviously the more cost efficient alternative: Free Dloads vs. P1-2k a pop for @ BD disc

Cons:
1. Hard to ff and rew (no user-friendly buttons like the ones you find on your typical dvd rc).  There are alternative methods though - search every 30secs, time search, fwd in milliseconds (too slow vs. typical fwd).
2. Long start-up (really similar to a pc booting up)
3. Fan Noise - again similar to a pc (noisier than my PS3's discreet hum).
4. Sensitive files - mkv's and other compression formats are equally more prone to errors / lags / no vol etc.  Transferring files is a delicate process...

Overall, would still GO for it hands down given the valuable "pros" I mentioned above which IMO outweighs the less significant; albeit more "cons" items.

Still highly recommended. Cheers!

It's really up to the retailer. It will be lower of course than the original price dependent on the "# of buyers" and "payment method".
How much? I don't know at this point. Our target price: the lower, the better. ;D

Would just like to add another noteworthy component of this item - the remote of the EG-b is a real winner for the price.  What makes it unique: It's polished piano black in front BUT mat finish at the back giving that sleek / glossy look on top for eyes and a smooth anti-smudge surface on the bottom for your hand.

Very ergonomic, buttons are relatively easy to find (+glows in the dark) and very light and convenient without feeling cheap.  I have around more than twenty rc's at home but IMHO this has to be one of the most user-friendly pieces for the price in quite awhile.  Hehehe... lakas magtulak no...  Lesgo guys - tira na!  :D

Hey guys:

Please specify the HDD's you want with the units :>

RE: eSata:
- yes, transfers are only relevant between HDD to HDD.  But if you transfer between internal SATA and your eGreat, that's considered SATA to SATA.  We're clocking 80-100 MBsec transfers even with the SATA 1.5 jumper on.  This is on an XP machine on an NVIDIA 650 based motherboard.

Strangely, on our Vista / AMD 780g machine, we're clocking about 40-60.

Reality check:
- Unless you're transferring data at 500gb at a time, on a daily basis, USB 2.0 still offers 'ok' speeds. A 4gb movie transfers at about 5 minutes.  Of course, the price difference for eSata is also 'negligible' so in future proofing yourself, it's a very good option.

What you guys should really be thinking of is how you'd want to store your collection: external drives, NAS, pc-based file server... the list goes on.
