Topic: SACD - Stereo or Multi-channel?

How do you tell if the SACD has stereo SACD recording? Most of what I've seen so far indicate only "Hybrid" and "DSD", or "DSD Surround". Do all SACD's have a 2-ch DSD layer in addition to the surround and PCM if hybrid, or just surround DSD and 2 ch PCM unless otherwise indicated? I only use 2 channel amplification with my SACD Player, I don't want to end up spending over 1K for an SACD and end up listening to the PCM layer thanks to the 5ch only DSD.

Or can I simply assume that there is a stereo DSD layer in all SACD's?

There are 3 versions of SACD (depending on the recorded SACD disc):

1. DSD Multichannel Surround Sound (you need a SACD player)
2. DSD 2-channel Stereo (you need a SACD player)
3. CD Standard Stereo (you need a regular CD/DVD player)

In each SACD, the above no. 2 & 3 are present while no. 1 is optional (not all SACDs have it). Since you already own a SACD player, you don't really need another player.

In case you love multichannel surround, you can use your AV receiver/surround sound processor to play back the DSD 2-channel Stereo into multichannel surround.

However, for those audiophiles, they would certainly prefer "pure" or straight output to the receiver/amplification without any sound processing, thus strongly against any artificial multichannel surround.

Thanks, that settles it, Im goin to get some SACDs over the weekend. I was just worried that since they have multi-channel stickers/logos they only have that in DSD format, and my 2ch rig won't be able to play them. Anyways I still prefer 2ch with no extra simulated surround processing, I mean I can't get why music has to play behind me. I get annoyed at huge venues whenever I have to stand next to the speakers in the middle of the field.

I would like to explore getting some SACD's.  Though this post is more than a year ago, I am taking this lead to ask around.
