720p vs 1080p
« on: Oct 08, 2008 at 08:41 AM »
For those that has the same movie file in 720p and 1080p, can you post a side by side pic of the two? Kindly indicate the brand/model/size of your TV. Noticeable ba yung difference?

Thanks.  :)

Someone at HDB made a side-by-side comparison of 1080p vs. 720p using "split-screen" avisynth file.  This is supposed to simulate what happens when you playback either a 720p or 1080p encode of a 1080p/BD source.  I'm sharing some of the comparison shots.

Left source: 1080p (BD), cropped, untouched > crf18 encode
Right source: 1080p (BD), cropped > spline36resize to 720p (slight sharpening) > crf18 encode > spline36resize to 1080p

me too, can't see the difference bet 1080p & 720p on 32" lcd
if hindi available in 1080p (mkv, ts, wmv) yung gusto ko idownload, i prefer 720p in dts na version.

sometimes, the 1080p dts encode are in rar (upto 99 files ???) kaya pass na agad, hanap ng ibang version. btw, gagana ba rar sa egreat? (bro milken, help? :))

heres my preference in downloading mkv, ts, wmv files:
1. 1080p dts
2. 720p dts
3. 1080p dd
4. 720p dd

Obviously, a 1080p resolution vs a 720p resolution will not be that noticeable. If ever they are. 1080p are usually seen on 42" up. I have a 42" full HD LCD, but I cant seem to see much difference. But not with a 50 incher and above, its something else.

Still, I don't download 720p unless its not a movie. It's a little difficult to find a 1080p movie out there but I can assure you that 720p are not. That is why whenever I borrow some movies from a friend, I only copy 1080p.

and yes, I always look for the DTS audio.  :D

If you have a 32" LCD, I dont think it will matter much.  ;)

basically what i asked richie of ehome din. i want to maximize kasi my purchase of 1TB and i am also wondering whether i will be sacrificing that much quality by going with 720p files.

btw, i will be using it in an PT-AE900 720p projector.

I don't think egreat can play rar files.  Kailangan i-unrar muna.   :)

Actually, imo 1080p encode is an overkill if you have a 720p panel because your panel will downscale the signal.  It's nice to have though for future proofing, i.e. when you upgrade to a big full HD panel someday and you want to watch it again.  The difference in 1080p will be noticeable for full HD and large sized panels (>55"), provided you seat near enough  (there's a chart on this).  Now, whether you could notice the difference or how significant the difference is..is subjective and up to the viewer.

Also, not all movies (especially the old ones) are optimized and shot with high def equipment so no matter if it is 720p or 1080p, the pq is almost the same.  Computer animations and computer generated special effects look better in 1080p.  I'm certain IMAX-shot films will look stunning in 1080p too.

Btw, the video clips comparing 1080p vs. 720p is uploaded in hdb.ro.  title: 1080p vs 720p Comparison x264-HDL   Watch it and let you eyes decide.  :)

Even on a 58 inch 1080p plasma viewed within 8-9 feet, 720 is stunning enough. Let's just say that you won't know what you are missing unless you make
A side by side comparison.
Panasonic 58pz800u and BD55
Onkyo 876
Ps3/Xbox360
