I don't think I can put up with a player that only allows me to fast forward.

Can you skip to a scene by entering the time via the remote?

Mine will arrive on December 12 pa, and am already looking for at least 1 TB data storage. Does anybody uses WD mybook 1 TB instead of the recommended WD passport? If I choose passport meron na ba 1Tb na available sa market? Should I format the HDD NTFS or Fat 32? What's the Optimal partition size of the hdd?

Thanks in advance!!

Definitely NTFS if you're planning to play HD files. After reading the earlier posts that this player will do a scan for all media files first my vote is to keep it simple and just do one big partition.

You can't.  There are no number buttons on the remote control.  You can only fast forward/rewind upto 16x speed.

this would be a great player for non-techie type like my mom & dad.  small, efficient and will play almost anything.

So if I'm getting one it would probably end up as a gift to my parents.

Mine is definitely going back to the store.  Got it from Buy.com and got it last Saturday.  For a day, it was working fine.  Yesterday, the remote control started to act weird.  Sometimes, nothing happens when I press the remote.  On other times, pressing any of the D-pad buttons to navigate the menu would cause the remote to fire continuously  making it impossible for me to navigate the menu properly.  It will make me overshoot my target.  Tried replacing the remote's batteries and it's still the same.

During the first day that it was working, I was impressed.  For the price, I thought it was a good buy.  My only complaint is the speed of the scan function.  For me, 16X is a bit slow.  Probably, I'm just used to the scan speed of the PS3 (120x max).  Anyway, my brother-in-law will be returning to the US on Friday, and so will my WD media player.

Just an update to this problem.  I remember the first day I got it, I tried it on the Pioneer plasma on my HT room and it worked flawlessly.
The next day, I transferred it to my bedroom and hooked it to my Samsung LCD and that's when it started to act weird.  It appeared that mine is not an isolated case and there has been a lot of similar complaints.  Someone at AVSforum said that unit acts weird when paired with a Samsung or Philips LCD.  Here is his original post

"To people who are having problems with remote... this post could maybe help you solve your issues.
I got one unit about a week ago and it worked as advertised on a 47" Philips LCD (47PFL9732).
This weekend I bought another one for my brother who had another 47" Philips but a different model (47PFL5603). When I plugged the device, the remote was acting so weirdly that we almost couldn't control the device.
I was thinking that we definitely got one of the units with a defective remote which some people were talking about.
Then, I came across a message on a French forum by a user who had exactly the same model of Philips. Even though I don't speak French, a google translation made me understood that he also had the same kind of remote problems, apparently due to Infrared signals coming from the LCD interfering with the remote. He solved it by moving the unit further away from the TV and shielding it in some way.
I tried the same by moving the unit close to the ground and even turned it backwards so that it faces the wall. And all of a sudden it started to work flawlessly and we didn't have any problems since.
If this is not specific to just one model of TV then I'm guessing that some of you guys could have a similar interference problem. You may try this solution and see if it makes a difference
."

Here is another post.
"Found in this thread and on others around the web, some Televisions emit signals that interfere with the supplied WD remote. The TVs I've seen reported are generally Samsung and Philips.
Someone mentioned solving it by adjusting the position of the WD TV HD unit further from the television. Another user mentioned changing settings in the tv themselves, but I can't seem to find the post. I'm pretty positive it's in this very thread and regards a Samsung TV
. "

Too bad I read this late.  I had already asked my brother-in-law to return it to Buy.com.

IMO, better cough up an extra bucks and get the cheapest popcorn hour, pch a-100. it reads almost all formats esp with the updated FW. also, remember the software support and the forum community that helps sort out bugs. i don't think WD has that convenience todate.

I just want a cheap unit for the bedroom, so I'm only interested in the most basic functions.

On avsforum, there's a rumor about a firmware update which will include a Go-To function.

"According to an email exchange from Scott at Western Digital, a new firmware will be coming up soon which will correct the following issues. This isn't a confirmed list but they are testing the functions

*USB power-down when WDTV HD is shut off (High Priority)
*Fixed remote issues, ie. Not being able to turn the unit on or off
*VobSub subtitle support (planned but may not be included with this release)
*Go-To Function

He said these are the major fixes and there will be many many small bug fixes. He also mentioned there are many more planned features and fixes but since the WDTV HD has only been out for 3 weeks, they don't want to release updates without proper testing. He said that power management is at the top of their list, didn't mention what this would include other than USB power down".

I just came back from holiday today. I brought along this and a portable HD (USB powered) during our trip. Its really a big convenience compared to having a portable dvd and discs while travelling.

9T plus dealer's price. Too Expensive. Better buy at Amazon or Bestbuy.
Anyway, My friend said his WD playing 1080p sometimes pixelize. But at 720p no problems.

Went to COMMDAPP at SMX today and there is a demo there of the WD TV HD media player.  They are just using composite video and L/R analog jacks connected to a Samsung LCD TV. The files that they are playing are avi and mp4 files.  :P It is being sold at P65++.  If anybody interested just go there to see the unit.  Looks like a small WD Essentials HDD.  Bagay na bagay if you are using this external HDD.  ;)
