price from QL is 12,650 for the DW TV HD + 1Tb MyBook Essential, based on their posting sa TPC.  if i ask for the "ninjababez xmas promo", will i get it lower pa?
bump for my question...

it's like getting a kia and an suv :>  in my opinion, while the wd tv is a nice entry level player, you really have to determine what sort of movie viewer you are -- if you're the casual sort of viewer who won't be needing a lot of storage, then you'd go wd tv.  but if you're  out to make a digital library of your entire movie collection, the NMTs offer greater flexibility.

initial impressions:

UI: usable, nothing much to say about it.  i don't like the icon based item  listing, unless you can put thumbnails on it.  Operation is straightforward though, and very... usable.

PQ:  nothing obviously different at first glance.  this is like, 3 hours worth of scrolling through 1080p titles.  nothing conclusive at this point.

Compatibility: doesn't play some of the bigger files, probably a compatibility issue.  cannot play m2ts files.  some of the files play but has artifacts present (pixel-isation)  one file had sound skipping (skipping was evident on the egreat, but theses were half second pauses) lasting 2-3 seconds.  Everything points to codec/firmware issues, which seem correctible.

Package: dismal, but for the price, acceptable -- no hdmi is a real bummer.  No component option.   Has two types of power plugs though (round/flat) which is somewhat useful.

Other notes: starts up rather slow sometimes, not sure how it goes.  Takes almost as long as NMTs, and sometimes doesn't show the picture at all.  But these are probably just quirks that you can live with, once you know them.

Audio: some out of sync issues were present that were not present in NMTs.  Seems like a codec issue again.

Bottom line: none of the flaws that were noted seemed to be permanent, or something that could not be fixed with firmware updates.  However, you do get the impression that the features/UI is as good as it gets, which isn't a bad thing, as it is very usable.  I reserve judgment until we see how well/often WD updates the firmware for this device.  Remember, always look at the total cost of ownership versus one  time costs -- you'd spend more on storage, audio and your TV, not too mention time managing and keeping your content, versus the seemingly small cost of this player.

As it is, so far so good, you get what you pay for and it does work as advertised (Full HD playback).

I think this is the initial review of Gren of the WD HD player as stated by Alfie.

@nerveblocker- yep, which to my non-techie lawyers understanding also means "nice entry level player"

@clondakin- ok if you value the opinion of an ordinary user i will.

let me start with the background of why i bought the device.

a client of mine "gifted" me with a samsung 32" lcd tv. of course i was very  happy and intended to replace the old crt tv being used by my kids. so i thought, nakatipid na ako ng cost ng tv, bibili na lang ako ng player para magamit naman yung capability ng tv. when the tv was delivered to my office, i suddenly decided to get an nmt for my kids to be able to watch those bakugan, pokemon etc downloads that i have stored in usb. but after  reading the threads here , i decided to get the wd tv mainly because it was just to be used for the stated purpose. in short i just wanted a player with hdmi and since the wd tv just cost P6K i thought to myself how can I possibly regret spending just P6K?

so i bought the wd tv the same night the lcd tv was delivered. i also bought a cheap HTIB which i planned to use with the optical of the wdtv. when i got home in less than 30 minutes the kids were watching bakugan on the lcd tv with sound from the HTIB. the picture quality was definitely better than before when they were just using a generic china player/usb/crt tv. my client who got me the lcd tv also bought one from ehome and got a 1tb drive. he graciously let me borrow the 1tb so i can watch hd files and he and i have encountered no problems whatsoever todate. in the words of my friend, "sometimes its so clear our eyes hurt." the unit is so easy to use my kids got the hang of it in minutes.  like gren said its very "usable" and it does what was said it can do.

but of course we're not experts like you guys here. and i dont even own a blu ray player. im not really into ht that much, just into audio. thats why i was wondering about the bad reviews. i wanted to know if it would explode in the faces of my kids, would damage my tv, interfere with the celphone signal or things like that.

"Basahin mo nalang iyun' itaas. Wink

Mga kapatid... Merry Christmas na lang... :-)

Doc Alfie... friendship rin kami ni Atty. Blitz (sulit na kaibigan yan!)... hehehe... halatang mga pioneering batch tayo dito hehehe... speaking of which, ito OT na talaga... nasaan na si Ka Woodie???

Anyways, I'll bet may 2nd version pa naman nito... also, malamang pababa ang presyo niyan... and of course, marami pang ibabato sa atin ang mainland China na mga ganitong players... pero masaya rin ako sa Acer X3200 na nakuha na tip from you and also masaya pa rin ako sa eGreat and Novatron...

Ika nga this is a disruptive technology... "game" changer... pag naging mas commodity prices to and pati internet access pricing bagsak presyo, pati yung mga DVD formal and informal sellers, mag-iiba na ng strategy...

FYI lang.  Just got a WDTV from Gren last night and nakakaplay naman sya ng 1080p.  There are some files na may issues yung sound like nag skip yung sound on the DTS track but I think isolated to a few movies and may be corrected via a future firmware upgrade (hopefully).

One thing to note is that subtitles embedded in the MKV does not seem to be supported at this point.  Again, may be corrected in the future via firmware.

Clarification lang mga kabayan.  Yung TDK 1080 DTS na MKV is 16GB (average video bitrate is higher than 11.5mpbs).  Yung 30GB is BD Rip. ;D

I dont know kung meron nang sumubok nung 16GB na TDK (or yung nasa same range na versions ng movies) on any NMT, but Im very sure at least one of our members will have the chance from the 26th -    :)

Those so called 1080p encodes are really hit and miss.   Some are as light as 720p, some are as heavy as Pacquiao's left (nakaka-hilo bale).   Depende sa encoding level, sa video bitrate and kung DXVA compliant (but DXVA compliance is not a feature of NMTs at the moment - I think).  Ang laki pa ng range ng sizes ng 1080ps - from 4GB to about 17GB.  So its not simple to claim that a device can actually handle 1080 unless subukin mo yung pinakamabigat na available diba?
