Latest firmware: ver. 1.01.02.

Fixes only 1 minor issue:

"Resolved the issue surrounding updating the firmware from a large (500GB or larger) drive, previously the WDTV™ would not recognize the updated firmware on a large drive."

Download firmware update (1.01.02) and release notes (1.01.01 & 1.01.02) from WD TV Software Update Page:

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/

Click "Download Now" and "Release Notes".

----------------------------------------------

Safe firmware flash method, if updating from a version earlier than 1.01.02:

- Get a thumb drive; save its exisitng contents in another location; reformat the thumb drive.
- Copy the extracted .BIN and .VER files to the thumb drive.
- On the WD, go to Home > Settings System > System reset > OK.
- Eject all connected drives, then physically disconnect all USB ports.
- Connect thumb drive to the WD, then proceed with firmware update instructions on the release notes.

Guys saan may pinaka-murang WD HD player?  Pati may nabibilhan ba na upgraded na yung firmware?  Ayaw kasi ng dad ko na kami yung mag-update kasi baka ma-brick pa namin yung device, lalo na kung sakaling mag-brownout.

We have a Samsung Series 7 TV at home.  When I play divx movies directly on the TV's USB port (wiselink pro), the images are sharper (and way, way better) as when I play the divx movie on the Samsung HTIB that came with the TV (using the HTIB's USB port).  And another thing, the HTIB plays divx movies on a wrong resolution (either something gets cropped or letter or pillar boxes are included).  The HTIB is connected via HDMI.

I just wanted to know the WD player to see if it plays .avi and .mkv movies on a correct resolution.  And oh, if I play a 4:3 movie on the WD, and the WD plays it 4:3, is there an option for me to have it streched to fill the TV's 16:9 resolution.

And oh, would anyone be kind enough to post pics of the WD player playing movies with subtitles on (either .srt or .sub).  I'm pretty particular with how subtitles look :)  Thanks a lot!

Bought one with 320g passport last dec 30 from eHome (thanks Richie and those who entertained us).

Can the audio be passed thru HDMI when the audio output is set to stereo?

No, you cannot pass the audio thru HDMI even the settings is in digital.

It looks like this WD thread will soon become the longest thread on the NMT board.  That's quite a feat for a new device that's not even an NMT!   :o

And oh, would anyone be kind enough to post pics of the WD player playing movies with subtitles on (either .srt or .sub).  I'm pretty particular with how subtitles look :)

With firmware update 1.01.01, subtitles are displayed at the lowest portion of the screen.

Subtitle size is selectable on the player.  Font size selections are: 24, 28, 32, 36, and 40.  The above screenshot used font size 36.

When displaying only 1 line of subtitle text, that single line goes to the very bottom of the screen.

Bugs:

1. When displaying 2 lines of subtitle text, the 2nd line is slightly off-center.
2. After a long interval without subtitles, the next subtitle will appear about 1 to 2 seconds late.  On scenes where there is a rapid succession of subtitles, synchronization recovers.

The above screenshots used .srt (UTF-8) subtitles, ripped from orig DVD Lord of the Rings Extended (which I own, of course 8)) using SubRip 1.05b4.

Really? it's not working with my Denon 3806 thats why i'm using a separate optical cable for the audio.

Ooops, mukhang hindi ko na-send yung na-type ko na.

OnT: Looking at the specs, it seems the WD player can't play .ogm files.  Darn, I have a lot of .ogm files (mainly those that have dual audio streams).  Is there a way for me to convert the .ogm files to .mkv and retain the audio streams in just one file.  Thanks!

OffT: Thanks for the subtitle screenshot Barrister!  You're a lawyer, I presume.  And oh, if you work at the firm as indicated in your email add (if it is the same firm), then I might have seen you before.  Or maybe not.  A professor of mine held dinner for us his students at his house (where the firm is also located) at the end of the semester.

How do you know what firmware version is installed in the player?
With too many options you could end up not choosing one

planning on buying this since it's the cheapest one available and I already have a WD Passport drive.

can this play rm/rmvb files? I have some anime collections in real media format so I'm hoping I can watch those with this player. =) if not then its not a problem since at its price it's still an steal >;)

He He He... Engot lang ako, pwede din pala sa Denon 3806, nakaset lang pala audio input sa optical hindi sa HDMI.  ;D ;D
Pero sa DVD bitstream ng DD & DTS codecs walang sounds pag output mo sa HDMI. No problem though with PS3, Toshiba HD-DVD & lately sa WD player. Yan siguro problema sa older version ng HDMI 1.1 & 1.2.  ;D

hi... i read this and as per the avsforum, my USB drives should be off when i eject or turn off the WD via remote... however, this doesnt happen... my USB are still lit up even after ejecting or turning off the WD... what does this mean?

Also take note of vibrations, not just the USB light.  The USB light indicates presence of USB power.  Lightly touch the My Passport's casing.  Vibration indicates a spinning drive.

Observe the following:

- Power off the WD via remote:  My Passport vibrates because disc is still spinning.  USB light on because power is still present.

- Eject the My Passport:  No vibration because no spinning.  But USB light remains on because USB power is still present.

- Unplug the unit:  No vibration because no spinning.  USB light off because there is no power.

- A blinking light means that the WD is reading the contents of the My Passport.

==================================

An item in the bug list at avsforum states:

USB power is not entirely cut off when USB storage drives are ejected or the WD TV is shut down via remote.
Note: When the WD TV is shut down via remote, it should automatically eject all connected USB storage drives first, so that the drives can go to sleep immediately.

The above item means that they are requesting the following fixes:

- Ejecting the My Passport should spin down the disc AND cut off USB power;

- Powering off the WD via remote should also automatically eject the My Passport AND cut off USB power.
