what is your method of connection?
a) headphone out minijack to RCA left & right?
b) ipod lineout to RCA left & right?

if a) you'll have to control volume via ipod, set it to 50% or a little bit more then adjust via your AVR's volume knob
money is best spent

if you buy an ipod dock or Ipod lineouts from ferds audio ( http://www.ferdsaudio.com/Lineouts.htm), it will solve your problem. I am currently using Xitel Hi Fi Link for Ipod connected to my AVR and Im lovin' it  ;D

I use this to connect my iPod to my audio setup, it's an iPod AV connector. the left and right RCA are line level and is not controlled by the volume control of the iPod...

Have you adjusted the volume of the mp3s via the iTunes?
And have you also adjusted the volume level in the settings of the iPod?

This thread is also relevant and might help you up on volume adjustment...

I have been using my iPod 80GB for over 2 years now, and its plugged up front my AVR, and it works perfectly...

Good luck.
