I would just like to ask, the best talaga AV 8801 kaya lang di ba ito overkill, I mean the 11.2 channels. If I have the money to buy this but would only use 7.2 channel, should I buy the AV8801, the AV 7701 or the Onkyp PR SC 5509? Thanks!

depends on your room size. but the DACS and processor the marantz uses is really top-notch. if you have a big enough room you will hear the benefits of the 11.2 set up. :)

The room is not really that big Sir. Modesty aside, I just have this mentally to buy "top of the line" items if I could really afford them because I want premium quality items that are also reliable and efficient, at the same time, would last for years. Assuming I wouldn't stretch my budget for AV 8801, what would I miss, component quality-wise. with the AV 7701. Why shouldn't I buy the Onkyo PR SC 5509 instead over the Marantz? Thanks again!

i believe the marantz would have the better DACs than the onkyo. it also seems to have a better implemtation of the audyssey multi eqxt32 based on the forums. :)

between the av8801 and av7701, the 8801 has audyssey multi eqxt32 while the 7701 only has audyssey multi eqxt. the 8801 also uses better components than the 7701. 8801 uses a toroidal power supply. the 7701 doesn't. 8801 is 11.2 while the 7701 is only 7.2. :)

I am planning to go separates by buying the Marantz AV8801 this coming June (an upgrade from my existing Onkyo AVR right now) to feed initially my pair B&W CDM 1NT and a CDM CNT. I am also thinking initially going bi-amping initially with these set-up. What do you think is the best 5-channel amp to complement and provide ample power to my B&Ws? Thanks!

Why not consider the Marantz power amp also... MM8077

150 watts x 7 Channels @ 8 Ohms

Or Emotiva XPR-5

400 watts x 5 Channels @ 8 Ohms

Yep I leaning toward emotiva XPR - 5 but a bit worry it's an overkill or perhaps unsafe for my B&W CDM 1NT and CDM CNT (200 wpc rms  amp vs. 120 wpc speakers) especially if bi-amping is done. Any comment to ease my worry? Thanks again

Honestly i wouldnt worry, as long as you dont listen at reference levels.  Alalay na lang sa volume knob and you'll be fine.  The stronger the amp the better, parating busog ang speaker even during explosions, clean parin ang sound nyan kasi hindi hirap ang amp.

I also wouldn't recommend bi-amping bookshelf speakers especially using high powered power amps... Possibility of frying your tweeters...

I think he just meant passive biamping, so there is much less of a risk.

Sir I have audition both amps before side by side for several days . ...The onkyo is too bright, the sound stage is small and lastly there's the fatigue characteristics. What I like about the Onkyo is the extra features, that's about it...for me its  just a pc. of crap. On the other hand the marantz is just right, not to bright, silky highs, big sound stage...its analytical and musical at the same time... as for the amps I would recommend Parasound A52/51 or go all the way Marantz...use the XLR's there's a 30-40% increase in sound quality over rca's...
Good luck sir...

I dont think the emotiva is overkill, do not worry about the big watts you see, the bigger the better less effort to drive the speakers..(unsafe) if you misuse the equipment...and your processor has also a cut off freq...use it if it worries you... cheers..

Very interesting and intriguing at the same time. Technically speaking, what components and features does AV 8801 has over AV 7701 except for the obvious 11.2 channel vs. 7.2 channel that made it more than twice as expensive?

But seriously though. I have both for testing. Sobrang layo ng 8801 sa 7701. Come over if you want. My 8801 is here to stay

Thanks so much sir Marc for the opportunity to see and hear the Marantz AV8801 and MM8807 set up. Truly amazing separates. Lively, dynamic and powerful. Kanina ko lang narinig tununog ng maganda yung supersat 3, very very cleat ang surround effects. And the dialogues.... so clear and precise...
