currently watching 100 days to heaven and my binondo girl sa ch2  :-[

Ba't ka nakasimangot pre?  ;D

Some thoughts:

100 Days to Heaven– for a religious show, the main characters seem to be lacking in faith the most. Kumbaga, may hard evidence na sila that God and Heaven exists, tapos nakakita na sila ng napakaraming milagro, yet they still get bothered by trivial things like reconciling with your mother, etc. It’s a religious themed show with faithless characters.

My Binondo Girl – Surprisingly humorless.

Not sure if this is also true for other stations, but ABS-CBN telenovelas always seem to have a common pattern:
- lead characters always start out as annoying children for about a week or two
- lead character must always go through tremendous suffering and atrocious indignities before undergoing a change in status
- the above is always true whether lead character is deeply religious or some freaking dumbass martyr
- characters spew out lots of bull$hit dialogue not actually possible in real life

towards the end of the series:
- someone always gets shot
- someone always gets kidnapped
- someone always dies
- villain either undergoes drastic character change and is redeemed, or dies
- if lead character dies, he or she is always shown in the afterlife

Example: Munting Heredera,  Marimar, One true love, Anna Karenina...
laging may baliw na kontrabida
laging engot at walang alam sa batas kahit mayaman sila at pwede mag-hire ng lawyer

I'm forced to watch Please Be Careful with My Heart because ABS-CBN is our client and we're in charge of subtitling for TFC.

My mom and our maid LOVES this show and as far as I know it's CRAZY popular. But I don't get it! Maya is an annoying character who I want to slap half the time. Sir Chief is a dull, uninteresting character who's played by a dull, uninteresting actor so dull and boring that I don't get why ANYONE would fall for him. I think it's partially the fault of the actor. From the very first episode, I already know where this story is headed. YET PEOPLE STILL WATCH AND PEOPLE STILL LOVE IT.

I don't know why! Maybe I'm already too far gone, being a bit of critic who studied screenwriting and has acquired a taste for more intellectual, complex fare like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. But yes, I don't get it.

Idagdag mo na din sa study list mo ang "The Filipino Audience and Their Taste for Films". Hehe!
Madalas kc, probably dahil sa maraming mahirap sa bansa natin, yan mga ganyang stories give us hope na may possibility pa tayong yumaman and at the same time, falling in love. So san ka pa?

I think it's silly to compare pinoy telenovelas to cable shows like "breaking bad" or "game of thrones". Artistically, a more apt comparison would be to compare it to US soaps, or maybe Korean or Spanish telenevolas. It's like saying that you largely prefer "The Wire" or "The Sopranos" to "The Young and the Restless" or "The Days of our Lives" and then patting yourself in the back about how spectacularly sophisticated your entertainment tastes are.

As such, the question on why shows like "Be Careful With My Heart" are popular should be framed in the context of why soaps are popular in the first place:

Quote
"The popularity of soap opera appears to rest on its undemanding nature and its preoccupation with everyday concerns" (Livingstone 1990:56). Indeed, it has been argued that the undemanding nature of soap opera can be seen as a contributory factor to the genre's popularity. For example, a regular viewer of a particular soap opera may find viewing an undemanding activity due to his or her familiarity with the plots and characters.

...Despite this criticism of soap popularity with its viewers, the soap opera remains successful partly due to its element of familiarity and longevity and in doing so, "becomes a part of a family's shared history" (Brown 1994:85).

...the popularity of soap opera here stems from the pleasures offered by the points of identification offered by the characters. We want to watch and discover what happens to those specific characters locked into that specific network of relationships (Glaesner 1990:117).

Why Are Soap Operas So Popular?

Malamang, they will realize that the gay husband and clueless wife have to stay together for the kids so the gay lover either goes away or commits suicide.

BTW, why do you guys think the Catholic Church is getting all their panties in a bunch over My Husband's Lover? Eh, madami ng foreign shows nanagdepict ng gay couples, often in positive light: Glee, Brothers and Sisters, Will & Grace, Modern Family, etc. but when a Pinoy telenovela series does it, depict an honest and for once, not the flaming hairdresser type of gay relationship, they're getting all worried.

This trope is also being overused in ABS-CBN telenovelas, as in baby switching at birth between families of opposing social status (rich vs. poor). The switched kids eventually become involved with one another, and their stupid, stereotyped families go to war with one another, often with some evil bastard patriarch or bitchy matriarch (yet another overused trope in itself) making the conflict worse.

This was used in Ina, Kapatid, Anak and is currently being used again in Anna Liza and Muling Buksan ang Puso.

As someone who has been on the inside (Ricky Lee workshopper, writer for ABS-CBN), that is the case. The networks, by and large, make programs that are guaranteed to be hits because these days, the ads don't support the shows, they make the shows so you can watch the ads.

It's not because we lack writers with original ideas. I know A LOT of writers who have EXCELLENT, ORIGINAL, EXCITING ideas for shows (not to brag but yours truly included) but the networks want guaranteed ad revenue. Even if by some miracle your original idea was approved, you will be asked to rewrite it and rewrite it and rewrite it, until it becomes MORE generic and only the shell is left. It's so much so that Ricky Lee has told us that if we manage to get one or two original/new twists and turns into the soaps we're writing, it's considered a triumph for us.

Writers have almost zero power in writing these shows. And they're poorly paid too. I know writers who'd work well into the wee hours for only FOOD and a thank you.

So if you watch a Pinoy telenovela and you notice all of these tropes, it's NOT because of the writers. It's because of the TV network executives and advertisers who want GUARANTEED ratings (i.e. nothing so new that it would risk turning off viewers) and the Pinoys who swallow it all up in big numbers.
