NMT Sound Quality
« on: Jan 18, 2009 at 09:47 AM »
I noticed that most of the .mkv's i have downloaded which have DTS and DD encoding do not sound as good as the DTS and DD from DVD's.  Is it because of the compression etc?

Ganito ba talaga or ako lang nakakapansin?

As far as I know if the XviD or MKV file is encoded with Dolby Digital or DTS, it is exactly what's from the source. Bitrate is the same, quality is the same. The main thing they compress is the video.

Thanks guys.  I still think the compression makes the sound bad.

Other people elsewhere notice it as well.

In the link you gave the poster was comparing a DD5.1 versus a DTS5.1 audio track. That's not an apples to apples comparison.

AFAIK, MKV surround audio files (DD or DTS) is a direct stream copy from the original source and is not re-encoded in anyway. Any difference will be down to your audio hardware.

Fully agree. It's exactly the same, unless may defect ang file.

For some movies, like LOTR, the sound is incredibly good.

In my experience with some MKVs when they are encoded with DTS audio, yung dialogue seems a little low. I had to pump up the volume a bit to get the vocals out. But with the effects, wala prob.  ;)

That sounds strange. That never happened to me and I have watched a lot of DTS audio MKV files.

When you say "pump up the volume," are you referring to the Master Volume control or the trim of the center channel alone?

I initially had a wrong perception that NMT's do not have good SQ/PQ and was the reason why i did not immediately buy one. Akala ko malayo yung SQ/PQ vis-a-vis original copies. After seeing one in action during the eyeball kanina Sir Mark I told myself kailangan ko magipon to get one  ;D after getting this gadget have not played/watched any BD film pa  ;)

Yup. If you have a small room, your speakers will be located close to the walls. Plus, your listening position will also be close to a wall. Both are not good and cause all sorts of acoustic problems. In so far as room size is concerned, the bigger the better. After which, you should provide acoustic treatments.

Ok I will revive this thread.

I noticed a few days ago that some of my MKV files have harsh distorted treble.  This is most noticeable during loud scenes especially voices of women screaming etc.  Is this normal?

It might depend on your player and AVR .... sound quality is superb in my TVIX M6500A partnered with a Denon 1909, especially good for action movies and concerts ... DTS and TrueHD are supported

to me it's not the sound quality per se. it seems the sound is more "diffused"(?) or something. i mean with dvd audio tracks... to me there's more clarity and more accuracy (that is, with properly/ substantially encoded tracks).

Paki post yung technical info on the sound stream.   You can use Mediainfo (freeware) to extract the full info about a file.

same observation here. i feel dvd soundtracks have more slam than those from encoded movies on nmt's. i'm not sure though if it's truly the nature of the original BRD/HDDVD soundtrack, or if it's the transcoding to mkv's or the nmt itself.

Good for me--I got no golden ears to know the limitations of the sound of NMT over regular discs.  ;D
