Mas wide yung 2.35:1, mas marami kang nakikita, big budget movies lang usually gumagamit nito. Wall-E, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, etc.

1.85:1 fills up almost the entire screen of a 16:9 LCD/Plasma.

1.78:1 is used by most TV series. Prison Break, 24, Desperate Housewives, Chuck, Firefly, etc.

All widescreen LCDs/Plasmas currently available are 16:9, so pag higher than 1.78:1 (no black bars) or 1.85:1 (minimal black bars), meron pa ring black bars at the top and bottom.

Btw 16:9 = 1.77777777777778

Iiwasan mo ang Iron Man, Transformers at The Dark Knight, etc from now on? ;D

Anamorphic widescreen maximizes the widescreen area of your TV, yung widescreen (which may also be considered non-anamorphic widescreen), basahin mo nalang sa links below, di ko alam pano ko eexplain. ;D

Here's a good read regarding anamophic. Link

1.85:1
2.35:1

Anya kapag nasanay ka sa cinematic aspect ratio, mawawalan ka ng gana (ng konti) kung napupuno ng image ang screen.   Parang nagiging TV movie kase ang dating nung movie.  I know kids like it fullscreen but remember, you'd be losing something on the left and right sides if a very wide angle movie is modified to fit the screen.

Kung iiwasan mo ang cinemascope, then ang dami mong iiwasang high def movies.   ;)  Sabagay ang daming high def na TV shows.   Makuha mo palang yung Battlestar Galactica and Firefly, close to 100 hours na siguro yon  ;D

Hamot the trend is for even wider widescreen HDTVs.   Yung mga bagong Sony netbook palang, close to 16:7.5 na ang aspect ratio (2.1:1).   ;)

kung pipilitin pagkasyahin sa 16:9 TV ang cinemascope na walang ma-ka-crop sa left and right side, kailangang papayatin ang tao - squeezed on both sides kase or stretched vertically.   hamot masasanay ka rin.   ;)

kokontrahin kita but I really love those black bars when watching movies maski nung time pa ng VHS.  The bigger, the better.    To each his own of course.   ;)

Yun nga lang.  Kaya nga ayaw ng mga kids dahil nababawasan (daw) yung picture or lumiliit yung screen.   So ang temporary solution is to sit very close to the TV.   Pilitin mong sanayin ang sarili mo sa cinemascope (kase karamihan ng movies ay talagang ganon). Who knows one day you'd realize, ay ang ganda nga pala ng super wide angle.   :)

Exactly.  So in which case, layo ka naman sa TV para di mo mapansin na lumabo yung PQ.   ;)

Best solution: Get a projector and a huge screen.  ;D ;D

Aspect ratios depend on how the director wants to present his movie in theatres.  So if you're a lover of movies, like many of us, you want to watch your favorite movie in the ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO that is shown in theatres.  You don't want your Iron Man with aspect ratio of 2:35:1 to be cropped miserably into a fullscreen version with aspect ratio of 4:3.  You're losing lots of valuable data there brother.

Here's a link that will help explain aspect ratios further:

Hope this helps...

Additional trivia on aspect ratios:

Previously, the record holder for widest aspect ratio on home video was 2.76:1 on Ben Hur (Charlton Heston, 1959), shot on MGM Camera 65 (a.k.a Ultra Panavision 70), using 65mm film with 1.25x anamorphic.

2.76:1 image from Ben Hur

Today, the widest on home video is 2.89:1, for the new DVD of 1962’s How the West Was Won.

This movie was originally released on DVD at an aspect ratio of about 2.40:1:

2.40:1

The new release now has an aspect ratio of 2.89:1 on DVD and Blu-ray, plus a first-ever "Smilebox Format" for the Blu-ray version.

Would anybody care to comment on the 2.40:1  LCD released by Philips?  I would love to hear kung nag pick-up na siya sa Japan.  Meaning may bumibili na ba?  Would the public bite?  It would to nice to have this in the near future para wala na black bars sa 2.40 and no more 100 hours break in period.

Thanks!

This is the best reason I've ever read on why there are black bars:

The point of the black bars is to bring more tension to the movie and make the movie more exciting to watch, and sometimes make it more scary.

Some titles do not state the aspect ratio. It just say "widescreen". if there's no aspect ratio implied, what is its actual format on your tv.may black bar parin ba?

some title say Presented in "letterbox" widescreen format. no mention of the aspect ratio.

well, the reason why some DVD's do not state its aspect ratio instead it just says "widescreen"
is to simplify things for the average consumer who have no idea what those numbers mean.
