Guys will this seagate Free Agent Desk 1TB external hdd work well with those realtek nmt's?

it will work, its just a question what format you will format it with, they say it work best formatted as ext/3, although formatting it as ntfs will work too.

As far as the Xtreamer is concerned, there is no need to format in ext3.  The preference for ext3 is just for the family of devices (using Sigma chipset and running Syabas firmware) called Networked Media Tanks (HDX 1000, Popcorn Hour, etc.)

Internal/external hard drives formatted in ext3 and NTFS can be accessed read/write just fine by the Xtreamer... and there are no performance issues as far as I know.

What file system for internal hard drives?

An Xtreamer formats an internal hard drive with the NTFS file system

An HDX 1000 formats an internal hard drive with the ext3 file system

I will never buy Seagate again. I got hit by the 7200.11 bug and had another 7200.10 fail on me. Never again! >:(

Is it possible to use USB-powered hard drives or is it necessary to use external hard drives with its own AC power source?

I still think Seagate provides the best after-sales RMA replacement service...  Good luck with WD and others.  No problems kung natago nyo resibo.

May tanong lang peeps. Alin ba ang lalabas na mas magandang PQ (upscaling) sa 32 lcd bravia (and is it discernible?) when compared - yung downloaded divx movie na 700 mb size played sa lets say philips hdmi (this player also upscales movies on flash drives right?) or playing the same movie using an nmt, say WDTV? Thanks!

that's really hard to say, depends on the chips inside the dvd player. but for an nmt/media player, wdtvs are known to exhibit pretty good pq. i own a popcorn, and those divx files looks acceptable to me even when i project it through my pj, nothing to crow about but definitely watchable.

i have not tried it, but imho, the wdtv might have an edge here.  :)

I have this Seagate barracuda 7200.11 500GB hard drive (ST350032 0AS) supposed to have the good firmware already SD1A upon manufacturing is now starting to fail (primarily used for my movie storage)... I have windows 7, the bios failed to recognize this drive... but sometimes it does... and if it does after about a minute or so it would just disappear in windows after boot... I took the hard drive out and placed it a cdr-king enclosure... I works ok now (about 3 monrths now)... at first I thought it was a PSU problem since it work on the enclosure until I read it here...

I was planing to upgrde my PSU (Generic) to branded (Cooler master EX 460W) but since I read this... I need some advice on what to buy first? a HDD or PSU?  The PSU is Php2k and a new WD 500GB is Php2450... my budget only permits one of these....

1x of 320Gb Internal HDD (WD BLUE I think) >> For my torrent rig
1x of 1Tb Internal HDD (WD GREEN) >> For my PCH-A110
4x of 1Tb External HDD (WD GREEN)
2x of 1.5Tb Internal HDD (WD GREEN & SG)

** I've used both WD & SG drives extensively (for my NMT use & my PC shop), would have to say that WD performs much, much better - specifically the 1Tb above models.

SG does have the better RMA service (see Tipidpc post on this) ...... however this wont be a problem at all (for both WD & SG) as long as you keep all receipts & let the store handle the RMA replacement.

1 x Samsung EcoGreen F2 1.5TB (3.5")
1 x WD Elements 1.5TB (3.5")
1 x WD Elements 0.5TB (2.5")

I also have networked storage, but I'm yet to use this with my NMT. There's still enough space in those 3 directly-connected drives.

I have a Portable 500G WD Passport, 1TB WD Internal with Astone Enclosure and 500G Seagate External. So far all of them are working fine with Seagate being the oldest which I got last 2007 in the US while the 2 WD were only bought last year.

Still contemplating on getting an internal for the xtreamer or buy another 1TB external.  :)
I can stop speaking but I cannot so easily silence my thoughts...

Good day guys,
I'm planning to purchase my first NMT soon at the same time my first external HDD.
So I have a few questions

I'm currently eyeing the WD 1TB(seemingly the popular choice) or Astone 1TB

1) Does having eSata and firewire matter? Which NMT's support this type of connection and is it really faster?
2) Which one operates cooler?

TIA

i think you should go with wd, i had some non pdvd friends who complain of their astone hdd, which broke down for one reason or the other.

as for esata, if your pc has this connection then it can help in transferring files, and yes, its really faster than the usual usb 2.0.

as for using it on the nmt. if the nmt has an esata connection, it only helps in the transfer of files and not the actual watching (although i am not too sure about this).

^ Thanks for the always valuable input bro Aynz

Now, there are so many versions of WD 1TB

Which is the most basic version and which is the most feature-rich version?

Should I opt for just the basic version?
