Hong Kong: where to shop for audiophile equipment
« on: Jan 10, 2003 at 11:45 AM »
Just saw the thread about Singapore and remembered that I'm going to Hong Kong in a couple of weeks.

Which shops would you recommend?

meron din sa Causeway Bay, sa likod ng SOGO bldg. Along the main road, kung saan dumadaan yung tram.  Di ko lang alam kung mura dun compared to Mongkok.  ;)
shuffle up and deal!

go to nathan road. look for miramar and at the 3rd or 2nd floor you'll find a good store with a hi-end set-up you can drool over. they sell good demo units as well. Mongkok is ok but majority are just stalls as small as the one in Greenhills. Happy shopping!

for browsing and auditioning of audiophile equipment in hong kong, why not try the ocean centre/ocean terminal mall?  lots of shops selling fancy equipment there.  and of course these are authorized dealers.

i also find the salespeople in the malls a bit more accomodating and professional.  be careful with nathan road shops.  a lot of them are sleazy.  and if you do not know your prices, they are liable to rip you off.

at first glance, mall shops seem like the last place to look for bargains because of their higher prices. but in the end, its better to buy from them (peace o mind), specially if ur not a seasoned or experienced hk shopper.

pero ingat lagi, even some popular chains, like fortress are quite deceptive. sale daw, pero ung prices di naman nagbago, napansin ko kasi meron ako ni-titingnan na ilang items for some item then biglang nagkaroon ng "sale" tag, indi naman nagbago prices. yung nakalagay na "price before" eh never ko naman nakita dati, tsk tsk.

-----

also, dun base ur target prices on us retail prices and such, more often than not, the srp in hk, sg or other asian countries are much, much lower. for ex, the nad t752 msrp in us is US$899, while here in sg, msrp is US$614 (converting from SG$1080). add to that the usual discount (min 10%, higher if its out for quite some time)

the one behind SOGO is big din, i think nasa 3rd floor yung receivers, nasa 2nd floor yung ibang equipment, sa ground floor, digital camera and cellphones binebenta... although cheaper pa rin prices sa mongkok...

Thanks for all the replies. I only had time to go around the Ocean Terminal-Harbour City-Gateway complex. A number of shops are there. Saw ProAcs and MBLs, among others. Even the new BAT integrated amp. And lots and lots of plasmas.

Ended up browsing only. HK has become too expensive even for simple things (except on "final reduction" sale), let alone high-end stuff.

Where to buy Audio/Video in HONG KONG?
Just want to know where the A/V shops are bunched up in HK para maka-tipid sa time. The old HK thread is nowhere to be found on this board (youd get a 404). So please post if you know the places to shop in. Alam ko dun sa ocean terminal but i havent been to HK (aside from a stopover at the airport) in about a decade, so baka ala na dun.

Try the popular HK chains like Fortress or Broadway--they're everywhere. Fortress even has a store at the airport. You're unlikely to get lower prices at these stores though, but do check out their web sites:

http://www.fortress.com.hk/en/home.html
http://www.broadway.com.hk/ (chinese only)

These 2 stores are one-stop shop type of stores similar to Abenson's or SM Appliances; there are lots of specialty shops around, but I don't remember where they are.

Whatever you do, don't ever buy from the shops along Nathan Rd.--that's a given, since ang daming scam artists doon. Don't even set foot inside them, as they tend to get pushy and they'll most likely force you to buy something overpriced.

Thanks for the info. I remember fortress, thats where i bought my 1st digital camera. It was a sony mavica that used 3.5" dics as film hehe. I also remember getting scammed at one of those nathans electronics store where the most common tactic is BAIT&SWITCH. They'll give you a very low quote on the item you want then once youre inside theyll force you to buy another item which is way overpriced. Do not let them sell you things which you dont want. But i was a teen then so naisahan ako. I tried to return it pero alam mo naman yang mga Hk chinese, ayaw pumayag.

i know where to get computer stuff but im not sure about audio/video na mura.

If youre into computers, go to Sham Shui Po. Paglabas ng mrt, theres a building nearby (golden computer arcade ata) which is full of stores inside.

Thanks Ches.  Then I don't see the point to hand carry a 50lbs. subwoofer if the price is more or less the same....though it should be less in HK coz its tax free.

Guys, that's the the tip of the iceberg...while grancastle is one of the buildings where they sell audio/video stuff, go across there's another building...a few blocks away (same street: sae yeung choi) is prosperity building...go the central there are also LOTS of audio/video stuff...but this store in the picture carries a lot of brands...

lancito, also consider warranty...plus in some stores they can even give you "terms" here...good luck on your subwoofer hunt! :D
