The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien
« on: Feb 20, 2009 at 11:02 PM »
Picking up from Gurang's original thread here: http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=26066.0

Second to the last show is tonight at midnight. I saw a couple of Jimmy Fallon practice interviews. He still has some ways to go but I won't dismiss him entirely. I bet people will still shift focus to Conan alone since, arguably, his current Late Night stint is a much better show than Leno's ever was.

But that's just me  ;D I think Leno's cool, too. I just prefer to tune in to Conan or Letterman then Leno. Or whoever has the more interesting guests.

Conan takes over the Tonight Show in June
Jimmy Fallon takes over Late Night in March
Jay Leno and his chin will have a new show 5 nights a week on NBC prime time.

Leno somehow diminished the aura of the Tonight Show and Conan's "promotion" by having his new show air an hour earlier. Check out the various TV blogs. It's a fun read. While you're at it, youtube Norm MacDonald's most recent appearance on Conan. He sums up the events surrounding the move nicely  ;D

I never liked Leno. Very middle of the road. Not funny at all.

Conan was always the better show for me - - -more anarchic jokes, far far better musical guests and Max Weinberg's band is hot - - - but cable snafus have disabled my ability to watch any new shows, loved what they did to the Masturbating Bear though.

Mismo pre. Weirdness was Conan's bread and butter. Triumph, The Masturbating Bear, Horny Manatee, The Racist Singing Ghost and much more.  Will these work on an earlier time slot? We'll see...

Reunited  ;D:

It would have been impossible to predict back in the year 2000, but Andy Richter and Conan O'Brien are reuniting for good.

Richter, O'Brien's Late Night sidekick from the show's 1993 premiere until 2000, will become the announcer of The Tonight Show when O'Brien takes over for Jay Leno on June 1. Although Richter won't sit beside O'Brien, Ed McMahon-style, he will take part in sketches and other bits with the host.

That could mean a revival of still-funny-but-just-not-the-same routines from the Age of Andy, including their predictions about "The Year 2000" — and plenty of fierce staring contests between the two.

"Andy is one of the funniest people I know and we've maintained a close friendship since he left Late Night," O'Brien said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to working with Andy on a daily basis again, particularly since he owes me $300."

Richter and O'Brien displayed some of their old chemistry Friday on O'Brien's final Late Show, when Richter turned up as a surprise guest — the last non-musical guest in the show's 16-year run. (In another surprise, The White Stripes stopped in to perform.)

O'Brien's Late Night announcer, Joel Godard, won't have a role with the new show — but friends of O'Brien's tend to turn up in his studio often.

Looks like he is, according to this link:

Be interesting to see what Conan does and how his show performs at 1130. Now if only we could get JackTV on Sky.

Conan O'Brien Likely to End Hosting The Tonight Show Jan. 22

Leno Signs Deal to Host 'The Tonight Show' Again

Really feel bad for Conan.  IMO, he's way funnier than Leno.  If Conan loses the Tonight Show to Leno, I hope he goes back on the air soon on another network's talk show.  And I hope Leno fails miserably!  >:(

Yeah, Leno stopped being funny... 6 months before he took over The Tonight Show.

Good luck, Conan! I hope you bleed NBC dry, then move to a network that actually respects you, then proceed to completely annihilate Mr. Chin.

Back in 2004, Jay Leno gave a lengthy speech about passing the torch to O'Brien and preventing the destruction of friendships in the industry:

Conan's "Casual Encounters" listing over at Craigslist (don't know how long the link will last. Conan's listing for the Tonight Show's "barely used" set was gone a day after it was posted):

LINK

Edit:

Just in case they take it down, it reads:

- Tall, slender redhead available for nighttime recreation.
- 6’4”, completely ripped, VERY Caucasian.
- Drapes match the carpet.
- Currently homeless, must meet at your place.
- Can go a whole hour (with scheduled breaks every 7-10 minutes).
- Fatties welcome.
- Not afraid to take two people at once, and then a musical guest.
- NOTE: If you want me to perform after midnight, it'll cost you!

A different take on the controversy:

Why are we condemning Jeff Zucker and NBC over Leno?

Also, nice appearance by Jimmy Kimmel on Leno's show.

i just read this at

http://www.nydailynews.com

seems Jay is saying that he's not the one to blame for Conans exit

"its the ratings, ive got nothing to do with it" - is what Jay is saying, even stating "Through all of this, Conan O'Brien has been a gentleman, he's a good guy. I have no animosity towards him"

So its final then, Conan's last show will be friday, then Jay will be taking the show back after that

I like them both... and I haven't watched both shows for the past year or so so I really dont want to take sides

Thing is, Leno has a point, and Conan just chose another path, when Leno made the announcement a couple of years back, I was actually saddened about it, but thinking that its going to be conan to replace him, made me feel ok, then this  :(

anyways, conan's exit will cost nbc around 32.5 million, and it involves him not making any tv appearances till september, all his staff will be given severance pay, so the overall goes to around 40 mill

And yet, all he has to say to NBC returning him to the Tonight Show is "no". Such a class act, this Leno is  ::) Yeah, Conan is a "gentleman", despite all of the criticism he has hurled on-air towards Leno. The Big Chin is just being diplomatic, seeing as he has his old show back and there's no point in criticizing the very person he just screwed over.

Wait. I need to clarify: My "he" in the "6 months before" sentence was pertaining to Leno, not Conan. I actually did find Jay funny as Johnny Carson's permanent substitute host on Monday nights (or was it Friday nights?). He was just very different from Johnny, so it was a welcome break from the class act that was Carson. When he took over permanently, I really switched over to Dave.

And with that paragraph, I just really dated myself.  ;D
