(AP) - A look at the two Western Conference semifinal series (with regular season and playoff records):

No. 1 LOS ANGELES LAKERS (65-17, 4-1) vs. No. 5 HOUSTON ROCKETS (53-29, 4-2).

Season series: Lakers, 4-0. Los Angeles dominated the second halves of the games, outscoring the Rockets by a combined 223-162 (an average of 55.8-40.5) after halftime. Kobe Bryant averaged 28.3 points for the Lakers, going for 33 and 37 points in the two games that were decided by single digits. Yao Ming had 15.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for the Rockets.

Storyline: After Houston acquired Ron Artest to team with Yao and Tracy McGrady, this matchup was a popular prediction for the Western Conference finals. Instead, the teams meet a round earlier, with the Rockets hoping to slow down a Lakers team that dominated them in the regular season and cruised past Utah in the first round.

Key Matchup I: Bryant vs. Artest and Shane Battier. The Rockets are considered one of the teams that can best match up with the Lakers because they have two elite perimeter defenders to throw at Bryant. Yet nothing they did seemed to work, as he made 53 percent of his shots and delighted in overwhelming Artest, bragging that “I kicked his (butt) tonight” after a 37-point outing on March 11. Houston also needs more consistent offense from Artest, who shot 4-of-16 in that game and had a 2-for-11 night in another loss.

Key Matchup II: Pau Gasol vs. Luis Scola. Two of the top international big men have battled many times in key games for their national teams. Gasol averaged 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds against Houston this season, while Scola made 20 of 32 shots and scored 12.3 per game for Houston. He’ll have to stay out of foul trouble against Gasol and Lamar Odom.

X-Factor: Andrew Bynum. The Lakers didn’t use their former starting center much against Utah in the first round, playing him 15 minutes per game as he tries to regain his form following a long absence because of a knee injury. He could see more time to defend Yao, and he averaged 12 points in his two appearances against the Rockets this season.

Prediction: Lakers in 5.

No. 2 DENVER NUGGETS (54-28, 4-1) vs. No. 6 DALLAS MAVERICKS (50-32, 4-1).

Season series: Nuggets, 4-0. Denver won by two (twice), three and 10 points. Carmelo Anthony had a 43-point performance, averaged 31.3 points in three games, and the Nuggets won the one he missed when role players Dahntay Jones, Chris Andersen and Anthony Carter all scored in double figures. Dirk Nowitzki had four double-doubles, including a 44-point, 14-rebound game, and averaged 30 points and 11.3 rebounds, but his help was either inconsistent or injured. Josh Howard missed two games, joined by Jason Kidd in one of them. Outplayed by Chauncey Billups, Kidd missed 13 of 14 shots and totaled six points in the final two games he played.

Storyline: Two teams used to recent first-round failure finally advanced after strong finishes to the regular season. Denver reached the second round for the first time since 1994 by ousting New Orleans in five games, and Dallas eliminated San Antonio after consecutive first-round exits. The Mavs believe they’re playing well enough that their 0-4 record against the Nuggets means nothing.

Key matchup I: Anthony vs. Howard. Anthony was terrific offensively in the first round, averaging 24 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 46 percent from 3-point range. The Mavericks need Howard to control him while bringing the scoring he provided against the Hornets, when he averaged 18.8 points on 49 percent shooting.

Key matchup II: J.R. Smith vs. Jason Terry. Plenty of attention will be focused on the league’s two best sixth men, and not only because of Smith’s feud with Mavs owner Mark Cuban. Smith had two 20-point games against Dallas, but finished with two points on 1-of-14 shooting in the game he started for an injured Anthony. Terry, the winner of the sixth man award, will have to be sharper than he was in the first round, when he shot 38 percent and averaged 13.4 points—about six less than in the regular season.

X-factor: Nene. Relied on mostly for defense and rebounding, he scored 17 points per game against Dallas on 59 percent shooting. Erick Dampier is likely responsible for making sure he doesn’t hurt the Mavs that badly in this series.

Prediction: Nuggets in 6.

We deserve better.

(AP) - A look at the two Eastern Conference semifinal series (with regular season and playoff records):

No. 1 CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (66-16, 4-0) vs. No. 4 ATLANTA HAWKS (47-35, 4-3.)

Season series: Cavaliers, 3-1. Cleveland easily won the first matchup, but the final three games were decided by six or fewer points. The Hawks snapped the Cavaliers’ 11-game winning streak with a five-point home victory in December, and the Cavs needed a free throw by LeBron James with 1.6 seconds left to pull out an 88-87 victory on their other trip to Atlanta. James didn’t shoot well against the Hawks, but still averaged 26.3 points and 8.3 assists.

Storyline: Off since completing a sweep of Detroit on April 26, the Cavaliers finally got an opponent for the second round when the Hawks outlasted Miami in an ugly seven-game series that ended Sunday. Eliminated in this round last year, Cleveland will be heavily favored to get by an Atlanta team playing in the conference semifinals for the first time since 1999.

Key matchup I: Anderson Varejao vs. Josh Smith. The athletic Smith, who averaged 16.3 points and 8.9 rebounds in the first round, can score from inside or the perimeter. But he’s an emotional player who can lose his focus, and Varejao is one of the best in the league at getting under an opponent’s skin.

Key matchup II: Mo Williams vs. Mike Bibby. Bibby, a playoff veteran, was perhaps Atlanta’s most consistent player in the first round, when he scored 14.9 points per game and made 16 of 30 3-pointers. He may have to be even better so Williams, who punished the Hawks by averaging 23.3 points in the regular season, will have to spend energy on his defense.

X-factor: Zaza Pachulia. Pachulia gave the Hawks some strong play off the bench in the first round, averaging 7.6 points and 7.1 rebounds in about 24 minutes per game. Atlanta will need him to provide more rugged play to compete with a physical Cleveland frontline that lists the 6-foot-8 James as its small forward.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 5.

No. 2 BOSTON CELTICS (62-20, 4-3) vs. No. 3 ORLANDO MAGIC (59-23, 4-2).

Season series: Tied, 2-2. Orlando won the final two meetings, with Kevin Garnett missing one and playing sparingly in the other. Rajon Rondo also sat out a Boston loss. The Magic never reached 90 points, averaging 84.5, but limited the Celtics to 80.5 per game in the last two games. Paul Pierce averaged 23.3 points against the Magic, while Rashard Lewis went for 21.5 per game for Orlando.

Storyline: After surviving their seven-game classic against Chicago, the Celtics have little time to rest before the Magic visit. With the teams so evenly matched all season, Boston could be looking at another long series.

Key matchup I: Kendrick Perkins vs. Dwight Howard. Howard had four double-doubles against Boston, but the Celtics could probably live with the 12.5 points and 13 rebounds he averaged in the first two meetings. He averaged 21 points and 18 boards in the Magic’s victories, and with the Celtics so depleted up front, Perkins has to avoid foul trouble and stay on the floor to guard the Defensive Player of the Year.

Key matchup II: Rondo vs. Rafer Alston. After a sensational start to the playoffs, Rondo shot only 6-of-25 in the final two games of the first round, though his assist and rebound totals were still strong. He had similar shooting struggles against the Magic, going 8-of-21 in the last two games he played. Orlando won both games against Boston after acquiring Alston, who averaged 15.2 points in the first round.

X-factor: J.J. Redick. He stepped in for the injured Courtney Lee and scored 15 points on five 3-pointers in the clinching victory over Philadelphia, and he’ll probably stay in the starting lineup as long as Lee is out. Besides his offense, he needs to not be a defensive liability against Ray Allen.

Prediction: Celtics in 7.

We deserve better.

yeah... i would guess that too.  but still you would question the lakers' focus and determination.  not the kind that wins championships in my opinion.

I think the Lakers will win Game 2. The Rockets can already relax because they've done what they intended to do, which is to steal home court advantage (HCA).

The true test for the Lakers will be winning games 3 and/or 4 in Houston and stealing back the HCA.

As predicted, Coach Phil has adjusted well and clamped down on Yao Ming thereby winning Game 2.  Houston is a good team no doubt about it.  But the only way they can beat the Lakers is, as pointed out by the other pdvd members, if LA will play erratic basketball.  39 points in the first quarter?  Man!!  18 points in the 2nd quater?  Lousy.  When LA plays well, I don't think Houston can match up.  I'm not so concerned about Houston in this series.  LA will take care of them in no time. ( 4-1? hmmm.. maybe 4-2 naman ).

Should LA win ( which is likely ), next round will be vs Denver ( up 2-0 vs Dallas ).  Man, that's an exciting series. Denver is on a roll, with Billups there.  Sigurado gulpi ang Lakers dun kahit makalusot sila dun. It's the eye of the needle for the Lakers.

On the other side,  Cleveland has an easier task ahead.  Boston's done without Garnett ( sorry Celtic fans ).  Magic has no magic versus LBJ!

Everything going for Cleveland here.  LBJ.  Homecourt advantage.  Obstacle course for LA to the finals ( not to mention their erratic ways ).   Mukhang Cleveland yata.

But as they say, bilog ang bola.  Go Pacman, este, Lakers pala!!

Cleveland obstacle course for LA to the finals?  I'm assuming you meant obstacle for the "title"?  If yes, yup looks like the Cavs are it.  Boston is ailing.  But something tells me the Lakers have still not improved from a year ago in the finals.  Mainly they have not improved defensively.  I'm thinking the Cavs with LBJ and their superior defense will take the title this year.

Another controversial non-call by the refs in the end game between Denver and Dallas.  :( Denver won by a point.

^Tough loss for the Rockets. Won't be easy for them to adjust to Yao's absence in this series. LA's frontcourt will take advantage of it.

Meanwhile, the Cavs continue to steamroll the Hawks...  Like the Denver-Dallas series, this should be over in Game 4.

oo nga... disgrasya ang rockets... luks like it might take them a few more years naman to get out of the 2nd round. :) if the first round is hard and took them years to overcome, the second round is even harder. hehehe!

The NBA admitted that their referees erred at the end of game 4 of the Denver-Dallas series. Kaso, wala na sila magagawa dun.
