Popcorn Hour Distributor Raided
« on: Jun 29, 2009 at 02:29 PM »
News from a reliable source, OMB raided the Trinoma and Shang branches of a distributor of Popcorn Hour this weekend. They apparently advertised "free movies" with every purchase of Popcorn Hour in the newspaper... ::) ::) ::)

Madami na rin ang nagbebenta nga mga "Freebies" at "Ehem*Ehem" dito.  But the mods I think are keeping a blind eye on these things.  I hope this gets controlled at hindi maging talamak ang bentahan ng "Freebies" at "Ehem*Ehem" dito sa pdvd.

Fyi, this will change soon. HD NMTs were part of the roundtable discussion during the Warner launch last Friday - which caught me off-guard. Apparently, the distributors and the OMB are becoming increasingly aware of this new "channel" and consider it a major threat. Warner mentioned that this is a regional concern as well, so I think the cat's officially out of the bag.

I also noticed that PLDT has resorted to capping downloads, I used to get 150kbps to 250kbps at my source in New Manila, however, for the past month it was down to 50-60kbps. BayanTel hsa also capped my downloads to 80Kbps from a previous 100 to 150kbps. :-\ :'(

Yup, yup looks like torrent days are now numbered. :P :'(

PLDT is probably capping the download speed to control and regulate the total use of available (but limited) bandwidth, and not because Hollywood is already pressuring them to.

In Japan, Paramount pictures is probably the most active in terms of issuing Copyright Infringement warnings through the ISP.  But no speed limiter is being imposed at all.  The ISPs would simply request you to delete the time stamped file and remind you that it's not legal to download those stuff.

The thing is, it appears that Paramount has only been able to monitor the traffic through public trackers.   So I know many people who got warning letter for downloading AVIs from sites such as Piratebay and Isohunt.    Lesson learned, beware of Paramount releases - for now.

It would be best to report the mods about these "activities" rather than wait for them. The Mods need your help in policing the threads. ;)

Not if everybody complains or someone brings them to court. If the contract doesn't specifically mention a bandwidth or download speed cap, but merely mentions "unlimited internet", then by all rights the subscriber is entitled to unlimited internet—meaning, no caps of any sort.

Also, WRT to the Popcorn hour being distributed with freebies—that's the fault of the distributor. The MAFIAA can't really bar or criminalize the sale/distribution of NMTs per se—they might as well bar sale/distribution of PCs, since that's all an NMT is—a stripped down, highly specialized multimedia computer.

Agree with alistair ...... the very recent incident of P2P-capping by GLOBELINES, brought about a deluge of complaints from subscribers.

GLOBE had no recourse but to restore "proper" P2P speeds within the next few days. Power to the people.
