5 ‘vital’ years of Cinemalaya

By Marinel Cruz, Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—It’s been five years since the launch of Cinemalaya, a digital film fest that set out to showcase and nurture fresh talents.

Some of the neophyte talents who thus found their voices have become familiar names even in the international film festival circuit: Auraeus Solito, Adolfo Alix Jr., Jim Libiran, Francis Xavier Pasion, Chris Martinez, among others. How far they have gone as “graduates” is definitely one way to gauge the pioneering festival’s success.

Another measure is mainstream acceptance.

Five years ago, it would’ve been unthinkable for digital movies like “Boses,” “Jay,” “100” and “Concerto” to win in awards shows mounted by the local entertainment press.

This year, all the above-mentioned Cinemalaya 2008 entries figured prominently in the Enpress’ Golden Screen Awards.

Cinemalaya officers themselves didn’t anticipate the fest’s growth spurt in its first half-decade.

The Cinemalaya movers and shakers—Tonyboy Cojuangco, Nestor Jardin, Laurice Guillen and Robbie Tan—granted this exclusive interview to Inquirer Entertainment, to take stock of the annual event’s gains and assess the “tremendous” work that still lies ahead.

This year’s edition runs from July 17-26 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

How are the Cinemalaya entries so far?

Robbie Tan: The finalists are mostly in post-production now, editing their works.

What makes this year’s event different?

Nestor Jardin: When we started in 2005, we didn’t expect it to be an annual event. I think Cinemalaya has become an unqualified success on many fronts—including in terms of audience reception and feedback from critics here and abroad.

Did you imagine that it would grow this big?

Tonyboy Cojuangco: I want it to be bigger still! We’re patterning it after Sundance (independent film festival in the United States). Eventually, we want to have our own school, our own cable channel and distribution system.

How far are you from those goals?

TC: We currently have 40 films, plus the shorts, in our library. Hopefully, we can have films from other independent groups.

Do you have plans of opening the competition to entries from abroad?

NJ: Not in the near future. Our plan for next year is to introduce an Open Category. The Main Section will remain for new directors.

TC: The Open Category is for commercial, mainstream directors.

There’s a perception that Cinemalaya has gone mainstream and popular.

NJ: All the screenings at the CCP are packed, but it’s still not as big as the audience we want. Although I must say that the audience has risen exponentially in the last four years. In 2005, we had 8,000 people. In 2008, 29,000. We are looking forward to the day when we can have an audience outside CCP, like in the malls.

TC: But the limitation is... the Censors.

How about in schools?

NJ: That’s part of the plan. The more immediate goal is to set up a film distribution company.

Do you also plan to put up a school, like the Sundance Institute?

NJ: The whole idea behind Cinemalaya is mentoring. We don’t just give grants, we mentor and guide new filmmakers in the course of production.

What’s it like working with new filmmakers?

RT: Some can be obstinate in the beginning. But, later, they realize the value of our comments.

Laurice Guillen: I only come in, if it’s an extraordinary problem. Each filmmaker could have a different problem—script, technicals, casting.

RT: Some filmmakers want to cast only their friends. If those friends are not known or trained actors, they may encounter problems in the end.

How has Cinemalaya grown in the last five years?

LG: What is noticeable is the attention paid to technicals now. But every year, the batch is different.

When you started Cinemalaya, did you have specific goals? And have you accomplished them?

TC: When we started, Philippine cinema was dying. I’d like to think that, when we came in, we injected freshness and vitality to the industry.

LG: (Filmmaker) Joey Reyes, who was part of the deliberations for the Shorts, told me that he has finally decided to buy a digital camera and produce his own indie films.

Cinemalaya films won in the latest Enpress awards.

LG: I’m very happy to hear that because that’s one of our goals.

Does this mean that the mainstream audience is ready to embrace the indies?

LG: I think a lot of people are ready for the indies. It’s some of the networks that are not ready.

Do the networks consider Cinemalaya competition?

NJ: I don’t consider them competition. I was flattered when ABS-CBN came up with Cinema One Originals. I am glad that there are other digital initiatives like Sine Direk. I heard that Regal is also going digital.

Apart from local acceptance, one thing that really overwhelms us is the feedback from the international scene.

In the first year, I don’t remember having foreign guests. Last year, we had 14 foreign festival directors and programmers.

This year, Berlin, Pusan, Cannes and Toronto will be represented. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter also plan to cover it.

How does it feel, now that Cinemalaya has gone international?

TC: More than going international, what is important to me is that we will be able to market these films here and abroad. We want to set up a fund to help newcomers get recognized. This year, we are focusing on distribution and marketing.

What are the lessons, in terms of distribution and marketing?

TC: Not much (laughs)!

RT: The secret is the product that you offer. You have to make it a point to produce good films in order to attract an audience. We always ask the filmmakers to make something Filipino. In other words, the viewers should be able to see the Filipino soul in their works.

Just finished watching Paul Morales' CONCERTO. I was quite impressed on the execution of the bombing scenes, the aerial shots and the much-talked about exodus scene. Yes its powerful but only time will tell 10 years from now if it will be on the league of Gallaga's ORO PLATA MATA & O'hara's TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS.

I'm wondering also why it didn't get any single award from last year's Cinemalaya. Its the underdog and demands to be seen again on the big screen. With only a modest resources, Michael Bay's PEARL HARBOR will really look stupid compared to this one.

CONCERTO, to me, has surpassed ORO but has not yet quite reached TATLONG TAON's level--but pretty close. Such an elegant film, it is.

Saw MANGATYANAN and ENKWENTRO tonight..

1/4 of Enkwentro was promising. The rest ho-hum. Nice try. The movie claims that it had been shot in high definition but sadly I never saw it. The movie was immersed in half or almost total darkness. And the totally shaky, migraine-inducing camera works? I still don't get it.

Magatyanan on the other hand should have been shot in hi-definition coz technical aspects like editing and  cinematography were very good. Story is just ok though the director and the screenwriter could have exerted a little more effort on research and tried injecting realism and logic, regardless if the the storyline was a figment of their imagination. First and foremost, a beach in Isabela where the main produce is rice, corn and tobacco? Come on!! My family hails from Isabela and not once have I seen a coastline or body of water other than the Cagayan River. The next beach would be in Aparri which is around 3 hours from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. Second, since they shot the beach scenes in Zambales mainly Pundaquit and Anawangin Cove (I have been there this Summer), why go further north when they could have worked around their imaginative yet funny dwindling tribe story within Zambales?

Saw Last Supper No. 3 , Ang Pangagahasa Kay Fe and Enkwentro. Liked the first two - - -Supper for its screwball energy , Fe for its subtly off-kilter sense of disjoint - - - didn't much like the last.

Just saw two entries on the compe***on category last Sunday. Mike Sandejas' DINIG SANA KITA is a feel-good film about a rocker girl who abuses her hearing and a deaf man who loves to dance. Their paths crossed in a camp in Baguio City and naturally fall in love before the movie ends. The romantic cliches are quite funny and effective but the visuals fall flat.

Jerrold Tarog's MANGATYANAN follows the second part of his camera trilogy after the critically-acclaimed CONFESSIONAL. Its a visual feast as Che Ramos a travel photographer went to Isabela to capture and document a rare harvest ritual called MANGATYANAN, the film title. With memories of her past began to unravel while capturing the ritual, she finally confronts her past. Tarog's direction, screenplay and musical score were outstanding! This only confirms his status as one of the ground-breaking filmmakers of his generation and its not one-hit-wonder. The man is talented indeed. The script is so biting and gripping......"naniniwala ako sa Diyos, pero tao lang ang alam kong demonyo!" Che Ramos blurted out in one of the memorable moments in the film. Will watch it again this coming weekend at the CCP.

Free from censorship

By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:01:00 07/26/2009

MANILA, Philippines—Quite interestingly, controversial and X-rated films were given a public exhibition because of the Netpac competition of the Cinemalaya film festival, which wraps up at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Sunday.

Netpac or the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema is composed of film critics from all over the world.

Among the films vying for the Netpac prize are Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos’ “Walang Hanggang Paalam” and Adolfo Alix Jr.’s “Aurora,” both rated X by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

Meanwhile, a third entry, “Bayaw,” created buzz because of its full-frontal male nudity. A fourth Netpac film, Auraeus Solito’s “Boy,” was banned in Singapore because of “a long gay love scene” as well.

Villaluna said that the film’s journey from censorship to the CCP was long and arduous. “It makes you realize that filmmaking has become a struggle in this country. It’s frustrating ... but we are totally relieved to premiere at the CCP.”

Alix concurred: “It’s a bit liberating ... A lot of the viewers were puzzled by the double ‘X’ rating. Still, ‘Aurora’ can’t be shown outside of UP and the CCP.”

Villaluna explained: “Although Ellen and I think a regulatory board is a necessary social responsibility, it is more important to have a credible set of reviewers in that group.”

Some of the current board members, he said, “have a hard time differentiating prurient from relevant films.”

Alix said: “The board should focus their efforts on reevaluating PD 1986 (the law that created the MTRCB). A bill has been submitted to Congress to amend PD 1986. Hopefully, it sees the light of day.”

Classification, not censorship

Classification, not censorship, is the answer, noted Danio Caw, producer of “Bayaw.” “Some feel that censorship may hamper the growth of the indie scene, but I doubt if it can stop filmmakers who wish to express themselves.”

Cinemalaya and the Netpac competition provide a venue for films that would otherwise meet resistance from the censors, Caw, Alix and Villaluna agreed.

“Cinemalaya and Netpac help producers and directors express their ideas in the most integral way possible,” said Caw.

“Approval (from Cinemalaya and Netpac) meant a lot especially for a film like ‘Aurora’ which had been dismissed as gratuitous.” Alix said.

Villaluna, however, owned up that filmmakers have a social responsibility, too. “It’s a two-way street. A lot of filmmakers exploit the digital medium by making trashy porn films. We cannot stop that. The democratization of cinema comes with that reality. You just have to take the good with the bad.”

That’s precisely why the censors’ role becomes all the more crucial, Villaluna reiterated.

In the meantime, the Netpac competition, “a first in the Philippines,” said Villaluna, “underlines the fact that local cinema is making waves abroad.”

“That an international organization recognized our country [means that] we are closer to sharing our cinema and culture to a worldwide audience. Hopefully we get to maximize the attention... because the world is looking at the Philippines now,” Villaluna said.

Other films competing for the Netpac prize are Ralston Jover’s “Baseco Bakal Boys,” Yeng Grande’s “Prinsipe ng Sabong,” Seymour Barros Sanchez’s “Handumanan,” Jowee Morel’s “Latak” and Alix’s “Karera.”

I suppose there was a tribute to Manuel Conde (as a pinoeering independent filmmaker) via a retrospective of his surviving works, notably Genghis Khan. Any feedback?

No, there was no tribute to Manuel Conde this year. The retrospective of Conde films was done in Cinemalaya 2008.

OT: Here are my thoughts on the Conde retro last year.
