Anderson Silva had successful surgery on his left leg at a Las Vegas hospital after he broke his leg in Saturday night's UFC 168 against Chris Weidman. Silva was trying to re-gain UFC's middleweight title.
Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) tried a low, left leg kick in the second that was blocked by Weidman (11-0, 7-0) and resulted in the gruesome broken leg.
Silva's surgery, performed by UFC Dr. Steven Sanders, repaired his left tibia by inserting a rod into his leg. According to a statement from UFC, Silva's broken fibula was stabilized and won't require another surgery.
“Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months. Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover.”
