How to Have Optical Output in Laptop
« on: Jul 31, 2009 at 09:27 AM »
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Nvidia Geforce 8200M video card ......

I can connect the laptop display thru VGA ... (ganyan talaga di pa uso HDMI laptop ata back in 2007 :( )

proplem is gusto ko sana mag output ng 5.1 bitstream audio para sa mga mulitchannel 720p and 1080p files ko. unfortunately stereo jack lang pinaka output niya ...

how can i work around with this? anu dapat kong bilhin to make this work? and have an optical output?  If you can give a price indication I would gladly appreciate it..... Am weighing it with WDTV ..... eh baka may cheaper alternative sa pag maximize ko ng laptop ko .....

Advance thanks guys and gals ;)

Im not sure about your Dell. Check it it has optical out via headphone.

But for Acer Aspire brand usually they have optical out in the same port as audio out for headphones, all you need is a headphone compatible to optical out like this cable:

Then set your sound card settings to out sound via digital

If your Dell do not have optical out, all you need is a USB audio card with optical (EBAY has it for about Php 600.00 or less inclusing shipping)

With this,  you will be about to achieve bitstream out (DD/DTS) to be process by your receiver

check your laptop if it has the SPDIF mark on the earphone jack, then you can use the cable posted by Philander.

there must also be a Digital Output option on your Sound control panel to output 5.1 channel.

Purely video signal ang s-video, and has nothing to do with audio.  Maybe dm1179 is right.  It is common rin for the analog earphone jack to share ports with the digital toslink out (mini-jack toslink).

apparently its a 7-pin s-video adapter ..... na pwede s/pdif output

wala nang stock yung S-video to component nila .... but that is okay .... I just want the spdif out anyway

naisip ko nga sir pero if that would be the case then baka ituloy ko nalang WDTV dahil kakaunti nalang diperensiya.

ang upside lang ng creative ... syempre top notch audio quality ... pero as much as possible ayaw kong magkauron ng redundant component .....

Eto mura lang. Reputable brand naman ang Turtle Beach. May optical out siya that can pass multichannel surround.

Pwede ren gamitin nung iba yung analogue out since it's essentially a USB DAC hehehe.

Would you know where to get this locally? In ebay, shipping costs as much as the item. =(

The Asus Xonar U1 is an equivalent that's being sold locally (if you can find it).
http://www.asus.com.ph/products.aspx?l1=25&l2=147&l3=0&l4=0&model=1913&modelmenu=1

Another is the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 (such a long name)
http://ph.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=669&product=17751&listby=

Expect to pay more for these units lang nga.

Wala kasi ako alam na local reseller ng Turtle Beach. Yung mga kilala ko na meron ordered from the US din.
