Tube Amps not for Home Theater?
« on: Oct 25, 2009 at 11:51 AM »
A friend is strongly encouraging me to get a tube amp instead of a solid state. As I researched more & interviewed some people, it became clear that tube amps are well liked & preferred for music listening but never used for home theater. Since nobody could give a clear explanation why, I thought of asking here.

My usage will be 80% or more movie watching.

tube amps are 2 channel while home theater amps are 5.1 or 7.1. this is the simplest explanation i can give :)

I forgot to mention I will be using a 2.1 set up only. I find a 5.1 too costly & complex for my needs.

Aside from the number of channels, are there other reasons to avoid tube amps for ht?

Tube amps to HT provide a warmer sound so that people who do not like harsh and bright systems would use tube amps for 2.1 or 5.1 systems.  You can listen for extended period of time with tube amps as it is warmer to the ears.

I've always thought that a good amp should not in any way "colour" the signal sent through it, whether it by tube or solid state.

How about a hybrid 5-channel amp for watching concerts on HTs?

if the cost of ownership and maintainance of tube amps can not put you off, then by all means go ahead....amplifiers have no idea where they are being used.... ;D

no reason not to be able to use tubes amps for home theater if that is what you want.....except that for subs, you are better of using a class d amp.... ;D
That's OK, you can like or dislike anything you choose. That's the wonderful thing about the freedom

I use a 2a3 SE amp for my home theater. The signal goes:

Sony PS3->DAC->Aikido preamp->2a3 SE.

I can hook up a subwoofer, I have more than one output on my tube preamp.

My Denon HT Amp has been in storage for three years, love my tubed HT.
I went fishing the other day, and I caught a BIG ONE!

tube amps for HT would be more costly due to the prices of tubes which you'll burn-out more when used for HT and the needed wpc.

you will also not experience DD and DTS, though you did mention for 2.1 lang. you'd also need a sub out.

for a simple 2.1 setup, a tube amp is fine esp. at moderate volume. though, you won't experience dd, dts, etc. but with the warm/engaging sound of tube amp -- oks ka na. di nga ba't lumalawak ang sound (stage) using tube than most ss, so parang may surround speakers ka na rin yun nga lang di as accurate as a 5.1 setup pero di naman siguro kasing bagal ni kuya cesar (sumalangit nawa) ang ikot ng tunog.  ;D lalo na kung maliit lang ang room mo. suave yan. ayos na ayos pa pakinig mo sa music. ask the owner of AMX  ;) he once told me na type nya manood ng movies using tube amp  ;)

DD and DTS would be possible if you use a pre-pro and this:

very costly. A fellow KACer already has one.

Sir macdon has been using pre-pro lately. Could you enlighten us with the pre=pro, pros and cons sir macdon?

Many thanks.
