FLAC files, 192khz/24bits into CD-R
« on: Mar 13, 2010 at 12:30 PM »
sirs:

good day.
newbie questions po.

is it possible to burn those files into CD-Rs and play it to a CDP retaining their original samping rate?
heres what we did, kinopya po namin ung isang original audiophile reference CD(192/24)
then burnt it to a CD-r..well na downsample po sya sa 44.1khz..same thing with FLAC files..na down sample din po to 48khz..
is there any software/or burner that could duplicate the same sampling rate of the original one when you burn them into CD-r's?

all insights will be much apprciated..
thanks..

Redbook CDs are 44.1kHz/16-bit. Those "audiophile" CDs are just mastered at 192kHz/24-bit, but are downsampled to 44.1kHz/16-bit before pressing. The high resolution master and equipment just reduces processing losses on the studio/production side.

If you want true 192kHz/24-bit recordings, you can buy "Studio Master" recordings from Gimell or Linn. I've been doing this for sometime now, and I love the detail and smoothness of these recordings. Another possible source would be MLP DVD Audio discs (some of them do have 192kHz/24-bit material).

Not possible to cdr. Possible to dvd using dvd-a format, which allows up to 24 bits and 192 khz.

The software DVD-Audio Solo has a trial mode that allows you to burn up to 5 dvd-a disks free of charge, then to continue using it you have to pay $45 :). There is free software for this somewhere in Sourceforge, but I found it difficult to use.

Alternatively, you can simply leave these hi-res flac files in your hard disk and play them straight from the PC. I have configured Foobar2000/Wasapi to output 24 bits, 192 khz via SPDIF to an external DAC, which then feeds the analogue signal to the amp.

I don't think he is working with 192khz/24-bit files though, since they're ripped off a CD.

My mistake, I assumed his flac files were downloaded, and were not the same as the ripped files.

Sorry, I did not understand what you mean by this.

Did you mean that the SQ of the music became worse than its original state?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

my apology, my bad..thought linn records are in cd/dvd's..

Fully booked in the Fort used to have DVD-As, I'm not sure if they still do.

DVD-As can go upto 192kHz/24bit in 2ch stereo, and upto 96kHz/24-bit in upto 5.1 channels.

SACDs are quite a bit more common. Some branches of Astrovision used to stock Chesky and other SACDs (I'm not sure if they still do). Fully Booked also has them. SACD doesn't use PCM data though, as it employs DSD (and good luck with extracting and/or burning that layer to something else).
