Surround Speaker Placement Question
« on: Oct 01, 2010 at 01:33 AM »
We are moving to a smaller house and the sala is my only option to set-up my HT. Used to have a small dedicated HT room from the previous house and using A-Audio 1Sc BS with stands as surrounds equidistant to the listening position. Can't use the same set-up because of my 2 kids who may accidentally bump the speakers.

I'm planning to use bipolar speakers (e.g. Wharf dfs) as surrounds attached on the sidewalls but will not be equidstant to the listening position. Can the auto calibration feature of the receiver compensate for this? My current receiver is HK160. Wall mounting my current BS is also not advisable since they are back-ported.

Thanks in advance.

How large is the distance difference? Sound travels at 1125 ft per second of less than a foot per millisecond. If the distance difference is 3 ft, that's 3 milliseconds of delay. hardly audible.

Having said that, if your receiver has independent delay calibration per channel in milliseconds, you can do it manually.

Thank you for responding.

Left speaker will be 4 feet away from the listening position while right channel could be twice as much. Haven't had the chance to measure it yet.

Tried a 2.1 set-up last night in the sala and it was really hard to tame the boomy sound of the bass. Blame that on concrete walls, ceiling and tiled flooring. Hopefully it gets better once the carpet and curtains are installed.

That's why they put it there.

it's not the materials per se, it's the room mode.

@ sir markcrenz,

I was just thinking na kaya nga niya auto calibrate pero hindi maganda yung magiging effect kaya ako nagtanong. And can you please clarify yung room mode? Medyo hindi ko gets eh.

Thanks a lot.

Hahaha oo nga noh. :D thank you for a very informative read!

Quote
Dipole loudspeakers, such as electrostatic speakers are generally considered to be better than conventional speakers with respect to room modes. Because they have much reduced radiation sideways, and because they are never placed against a surface, they will not stimulate some room modes.

Equalisation of the sound system to compensate for the uneven frequency response caused by room resonances is or very limited use as the equalisation only works for one specific listening position and will actually cause the response to be worse in other listening positions. Also large bass boosts by sound system EQ can severely reduce the headroom in the sound system itself.

Mukha namang I'm in the right direction towards improving the sound. ;D

amplifier clipping? siguro you need more efficient speakers or bigger amp.

hindi naman clipping. more on yung boominess magnified na pag loud volumes. unlike dun sa set-up ko from the previous house na walang change kahit malakas or mahina yung volume. Dahil na din siguro sa room mode. :)

Sometimes kasi kapag walang laman, nagiging boomy talaga.

Finally, after several weeks of delay, I was able to complete setting-up the surround speakers (Carnival 3 bought from Jao). Boominess was also tamed using curtains behind the front speakers and TV plus the effect of the added furnitures in the living room. Auto-calibration also helped in integrating the new surrounds and subs.

Congrats sa system sir. Looks like acoustic panels na lang kailangan mo to improve SQ.  ;D

Ayos ang Synergy ni Jao. Group buy tayo? ;) ;)

sorry for ressurecting this old thread.  konting time lang kasi ang meron ako.

question mga bro ..
which one is better installation for a small room HT if youre using a Bipole svs SSS-02  :D
thanks  :)

use it as side or rear surround ..

USE IT AS REAR SURROUND

VS.

AS SIDE SURROUND
