thanks for the insights mga brader. ung 24p produced by my total media theatre 5 (PC) doesnt really looks different from the normal 60fps by powerdvd, well maybe i dont have a keen eye for this and as long as it wont bug down my tv im ok

Don't worry about it.  60p is still the best so far.

Ang 24p tech, palpak pa rin up to now.

so what's this thing called 'True Motion plus' and how does it differ from the technology called 'Motion Flow'?

Motion Plus and MotionFlow are not technical terms, but commercial names from manufacturers for marketing purposes.

The technical term is "Motion Interpolation Technology".

Samsung's name for its proprietary motion interpolation is "Motion Plus".  Sony names its tech as "MotionFlow".

Panasonic calls it "IFC" (Intelligent Frame Creation); LG calls it "TruMotion"; Toshiba calls it "ClearScan"; Philips calls it "HD Digital Natural Motion".

Motion interpolation generates intermediate animation frames and inserts those generated frames in between original frames.  If there are 24 frames per second, the software produces intermediate frames by guessing how those in-between frames would look like, to produce a total of 120 progressive frames per second.

For example:

3 original frames.  Motion interpolation tech generates 2 additional frames and inserts them to produce 5 frames total.

Therefore, only the 3 original frames are real.  The 2 additional ones are fake, generated by the software  ;).  You can imagine the potential for processing errors.  I'm sure sasablay yan, if the action on a given scene is very fast, or if you have a very long scene with continuous camera pans.

can a LCD tv with only 60hz refresh rate be integrated with this 'True Motion Plus' feature?

Don't call it "refresh rate".  The term started with CRT monitors, sometimes called the "horizontal scan rate".  The term is not applicable to LCD screens, but it was mistakenly carried over to LCD due to common usage.

60Hz format is a progressive NTSC video frame rate.  You need a higher frame rate if you're going to insert additional frames into 60Hz.  So if you have motion interpolation, the frame rate should be higher than 60Hz.

Motion interpolation usually uses 120Hz & 240Hz for NTSC sources, since 120 & 240 are divisible by 60 (NTSC) and divisible by 24 (frame rate of film).  Motion interpolation for PAL sources usually use 100Hz & 200Hz, since 100 & 200 are divisible by the progressive PAL frame rate of 50p.

Great info barrister!

To add to that, whenever I switch on the 100hz Clear Scan Pro of the XL700, during slow pans of certain movies like "The Dark Knight" you could clearly see a screen tearing that's really awful. This is also evident when 24p smooth film is switched on but does not appear during regular 24p.

*Opening of "The Dark Knight" Blu-Ray when the camera pans across Gothams buildings.

Ah, yes.  I remember I gave that scene as an example for comitatus, so she can look for judders in a long scene with continuous panning.

When googling about those tech things, it's very important to get your terminologies right.  Otherwise, it's going to be so confusing, you're going to find it really hard to wrap your head around these new technologies.

brader barrister and Carlo777 thanks but how about the 3d requirements on lcd tv? why does it have to be 120hz or 240hz?

That's easy.

60Hz is a spec for progressive NTSC video.  For 3D, you need 60Hz for each eye.  Lower than 60Hz per eye is unwatchable due to flicker.

Minimum of 60Hz per eye = Minimum of 120Hz for both eyes.

A 3D panel must be capable of at least 120Hz.

The difference between the two is that the XL700 has better color rendition over the LG in-question. What you'll get are deeper blacks and a better screen uniformity.

For digital games, do note that the LH70 is already a darn good TV for the PS3! So you'll probably just have a few notches up the ladder there.

Lets see:

For dvd:

XL700>LH70

For Blu-Ray:

XL700>LH70

For Games:

XL700>LH70 but this one has to be really close

For Cable:

XL700>LH70

 :)

Hi Sir carlo,

Btw I am simplyCarlo  ;D

Pa-recommend nmn po ako ng LCD TV. My choices is between 22" or 32".
Gagamitin ko sya sa work. Bale dual monitor sana. Connected sa Laptop.

Advisable ba na gamitin ung 32" sa work??? "dual monitor ang set up"
Di kaya lumabo kaagad mata ko sa 32"???

Anu po ba unit na masusugest nyo. My current budget now is 20K ---- ipon lng ng typical working student.

@simplyCarlo

A guy named Ninjababez is the best person to ask when it comes to TV for PC use but here is my take...

Since, it will be used as a PC monitor, may I suggest you get the most affordable FULLHD 1080p (1980x1080) LCD. Your take should be the LG460, which is still reasonably priced or if you're on a tight budget, any LCD TV with a resolution of 1280x720 or 1360x768 will suffice.

Now, if you'll just use this for work, may I say we skip the LCDTV route, and just go for high resolution PC LCD monitors.

Samsung, LG and Chimei offer HDMI capable 1080p high res monitors for great prices.

Let me know.

@bbathala

No problem, Merry Christmas buddy!

The truth always comes out! (Kidding) ;D ;D ;D

For me, anything larger than a 22inch monitor will blaze my sights at under 2 feet. I guess you should test and see it for yourself. Your pair of eyes may be greater than mine.

@simplyCarlo

I would still recommend an LCD monitor, but if you really want a lesser than a 32 inch LCD TV/Monitor. You could check out the Sony 22BX300, I believe that is being sold for under 20k and offers a 1080p capable display with a native rez of about 1366 X 768p.

One more thing, if you say, watching TV, does that mean we're simply taking about cable TV?

Thanks.

late last year 22inch AOC was selling like 6,900 to 7,100, you could check at PCXpress, 7279506, might be a lot lower this time.

Since you put it that way, and your budget is around 20k then go for the Toshiba 32AV700 (720p) TV. It has natural colors and won't bleed your eyes as much.

At that size I'd really push for a dedicated LCD PC monitor, but I do remember a Toshiba 22AV500. It's a 2008 model and I saw one attached to a laptop and was great as a PC monitor, but I'm not sure if it's still available.

Do check if the Chimei 24V700D is available already! It's a 24 inch FULLHD TV, that may fit your needs and budget.

Yes sir. Used to own a Chimei 24EH and used an AVerMedia AVerTV Box Genie I TV Tuner. The TV tuners usually go for around 1.8K pero and daming 2nd hand na available ngayon. Acceptable na yung Picture Quality niya for Cable TV viewing. This TV Tuner model comes with its own speaker on the unit itself pero sobrang pangit ng tunog. Kinabitan ko pa ng external speakers para mas maganda ang output.
