A short listening session with SVS S-Series SCS-01 speakers:An opportunity in visiting MikeC in Graceland, is something that I wouldnt pass up. Even amidst the stories of that 'magic water' that he loves to offer to visitors, didnt scare me one bit
.........besides, I only got tupayb in my wallet anyway
I wanted to hear his SVS speakers right away, but Mike insisted that we have lunch first - its obvious that he waited for me, so who am I refuse good food, right?
But wait, was the food mixed with the magic water perhaps? As we were heading towards the table, I had a feeling that I was done for
Just as we were finishing up lunch, a client arrived to pick up his orders - ahh, Im saved!
While Mike showed the client the various svs speakers - I just grabbed my cam to take some pics.
SSS-01 Dipole Surround. The speaker grill has metal pegs - nice touch!
SCS-01 2 x 6" mids with 1 x tweet. Sealed type no port. Could be stand mount or hang on wall.
MikeC explaining to the client the effects of drinking his magic water
STS-01 Tower/Floorstander
After everything was boxed up and Mike accompanying the client out, this finally left me alone to check out the SCS-01s that were hanging on the wall.
Looking at svs' website, I thought these SCS are small speakers - but they're really not. Each unit has 2 x 6" mids and a single tweeter. I was pleasantly surprised to see their true size in actual form.
Firing up Corrine May's "Fly Away" CD was a joy - even thou it was played by a dvdp powered by a Denon avr.
The sound was very clear and I was surprised how very neutral sounding the presentation was - not warm
and definitely not bright either. I was even pushing the volume up to fill Mike's 60sqm living room with loud music and was expecting my ears to ring - but there was none!
No enclosure resonance and no coloration - a very happy speaker to listen to!
If there's a downside, I would've wished it had more oomph in the lower frequency - but I guess thats why SVS makes subs anyway
If you have ever imagined of using 3 center speakers for your HT LCR before, here's a perfect example of how a great match/sync speaker set would sound sonically. Unfortunately, Mike didnt have a SCS-01 center speaker for me to demo - so I could only imagine that would've been a blast!
The SCS-01s could be hanged on the wall as they're sealed units - no port. This makes you save both space & money for buying stands. So since you saved space, now you can place that SVS subwoofer below it
The center channel even comes with its own base - in which you can either angle the speaker up or just fire straight - svs really thought of everything here!
Now I know why Mike's customers buy these speakers in complete sets - and not just by pairs. They even buy blindly without hearing them
I was just basically starting to put the speakers to its paces, but a quick glance at the tick-tock reminded me that I had to leave pretty soon to pick up my wife in Makati
Mike did persuade me to check out his HT upstairs and sample the Hulk's 10hz sonic cannon driven by his 3 Ultras, but had to desperately leave after a few minutes or suffer my wife's verbal cannons
Bitin talaga ako sobra - I still wanted to hear the surrounds as well as the STS-01 towers if Mike would grant my request in opening up some new stocks from his bodega
But alas, time was againts my fun today.........but I promised mike I will be back!
So if you guys are near Graceland......or heck, even if you're far - do check out these svs speakers and Im sure you wont be disappointed.........most specially since the 3 LCR costs less than 30k
