North and South (1985)

We're going back to 80's TV, so this will start it off. The requested late night movie.
We're starting off with Book 1, which has 2 double sided DVD's. It was a toss off between Roots and this.

North and South Book 2 (1986)

Continuing our late night movie with the second installment in the box set. Based on the sequel novel "Love and War".
Still a great series, worth the repeated views (last view was in 2005 when we received this set).

Thanks for the warning. We did get disappointed the first time we saw it in 2005, but after viewing it now, it was more tolerable.

North and South Book 3 (1994)

Based on the third book "Heaven and Hell" by John Jakes. A little better than I remember first viewing this 8 years ago. The earlier 2 parts of this series reminded me of how we eagerly awaited the episodes in installments in Betas from Sonix and in those terms, this is a GFT. ;)

While I enjoyed watching the TV mini series on DVD, all of the versions are watered down to make the story more visually appealing and because of the inherent budgetary constraints of TV production. A friendly suggestion: if you are also into reading, you should try the novels- I'm sure you'll find "Books I to III" more enjoyable as I did.  ;)

Sister Stella L

One of the few Filipino movies with social relevance that I watched pre-EDSA revolution. The story is about a nun who opened her eyes to the realities of daily wage earners' struggle against injustices and government oppression. It garnered several Urian awards for both cast and crew, including best picture in 1984.

My only regret in watching this again is the realization that producers don't make films like this (together with "Kapit Sa Patalim", "Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag", etc.) as they used to any more.

Thanks for the suggestion! Like yourself, I've always enjoyed most books better than the movie. But movies are able to stand on their own merits. Given the constraints film have, most do justice to the subject, IMHO, most get the storytelling done alright.

Most of the time one just wants to veg out for just a few hours on a movie, or time permitting, a book. The movie wins due to time constraints, but the book will always be the better choice.
