« on: Feb 19, 2011 at 06:49 PM »
Hi to everyone,

Out of curiousity, got this from a garage sale but don't have idea what it does in the audio system. Checked the net but still don't get clear info the specific application either for PRO Sound system or it's compatible for Home audio use.

Posted here to gather any additional info or anyone have used or similar to this in their system. Would appreciate anything you could share about this device....

That's a 70V line MAIN matching transformer Brader AJ, you'll need another pair of 70V-8R trannies to be coupled to your MAIN tranny so you can use it.

This type of setup which uses matching transformers are mainly used for speaker distribution systems with long cable runs such as those used in old churches and auditoriums. We've used them in the past when we installed the sound system for our church, but this technology has now been surpassed by balanced signal wiring setups coupled with powered speaker systems such as the JBL Eon.

Unfortunately, the high and low frequency losses associated with these audio transformers make them unusable for home hi-fi setups. However, if SQ is not paramount, such as a garden/patio sound setup then it still can be used but like I said, you'll need a distribution transformer per speaker.

Hth...

yes that's it Brader AJ!  ;)

let's borrow the pic from the link you posted...

the transformer connected to the amp's output is what you have right now, you'll then need a line to speaker transformer per speaker.

I think it's the same device inside my SR speakers which sounded very weak until I disconnected the wires & wired directly to the x-over.
