Just got a new desktop because I want to try connecting my extra HD-DVD Add-On.  Specs as follows:

Core 2 Duo Intel 2.4GHz
2GB DDR2 5300 RAM
500 GB HD
Nvidia 7600 GT 512MB, HDCP compliant
On-Board 7.1 Channel Audio with S/PDIF and Optical Out
Logitech Z-4 2.1 Ch. Speakers
22-inch Dell P1230 CRT set at 1600x1200, 100Hz
Vista Home Premium

Just installed PowerDVD Ultra Deluxe Ver. 7 last night (Torrents).  Will check how HD-DVD add-on performs later.  My video card might be a bottle neck.

help...need advice re htpc vs hdd

i would like to play dled files on my plasma. my options would seem to be a mediagate 350 hdd player and an htpc.

could the gurus recommend an htpc setup for less than 10k. i just need it for playing pc files of tv programs. if it can do wifi that would also be nice. small form factor would be ideal.

thanks!

i have a mediagate 350HD with a 320gb IDE hard disc attached to my TV.  I even brought this to Cebu to catch up on my viewing since there are a lot of free time between meetings.  Beats bringing my laptop for the same thing PLUS lots of storage, ang dami ko pinagpipilian.

since mediagate 35oHD accepts wifi signals, i have also watched a downloaded file stored in my pc direct to the TV attached to the mediagate.  In other forums, they say that you actually do not need a hard disc installed watch files networked to the mediagate.  though, i had problems with it before (I haven't tried it again - i'll try to experiment some time).

So with mediagate networked wifi with your pc, solve ka na.  To be safe install a cheap IDE hard disc, kahit yung maliit lang.  Actually, when i first bought the unit, i hesitated to buy a HD. I wanted to wait for the price of the big drives to go down since you can only physically put 1 HD inside, so i used my external 2.5" 80gb hard disc i use for mobile storage. i just bought a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter form one of the tpc sellers.

LOL, I have been asking this months ago. Its cheaper daw to buy a board with digital out. I found some sound cards from creative (see their website) w/ digital out but they cost about 4+k.

Will the sound card be a big factor in sound quality when you watch divx, dvds and play mp3s? Are those fancy creative sound cards really a whole lot better that the built-in sound?

sir i've been using Creative Audigy value through its digital out by using a 3.5mm stereo baby jack to RCA adapter, then Phillips Digital coaxial cable to my receiver. SPDIF pass through should be selected on the Creative console and other players you will use such as PowerDVD.

Will the sound card be a big factor in sound quality when you watch divx, dvds and play mp3s? Are those fancy creative sound cards really a whole lot better that the built-in sound?

For my ears there is a big difference. Sound is cleaner, have more details and bass is tighter. Using Creative Audigy Value.

With too many options you could end up not choosing one

- Intel X6800 Core 2 Extreme 2.93 GHz
- Winfast NVIDIA 8800 GTX (768MB)
- Foxconn DigitaLife X38A
- Western Digital Caviar 750GB
- 2GB A-Data DDR2 1066 MHz

Yes you'll need an amp. Strictly any digital avr with an optical or coaxial output for you to enjoy a full 5.1 digital experience. Or you could get one of those 5.1 multimedia speakers with digital inputs.

I have a Gigabyte p965 dq6 mobo and it has digital coax out. Assuming I connect this to the digital input of an av receiver, do i need any other setting in the PC for me to output sound from any video or mp3 that I have to the home theater speakers?

thanks sir, but full bitrate, I presume? A HTPC user friend of mine says its hard to get full bitrate of HD movies through regular HTPC's w/ no HDMI. you have to get a special sound card pa daw.

Just came fresh from greenhills & got a horizontal case for 1600. But I changed the power supply to HEC, as recommended by PC enthusiast friends.
