I also download through rapidshare so I dont worry about seeds and get full bandwidth. I can get one for 200php/month. Well worth it IMHO

Bro, where did you get a rapidshare account at 200php/month?  I got mine for 400+/month.. It's definitely worth it.. I get max speed at 180kb/sec and average at 100kb/sec..

I read that usenet followed by rapidshare are good sources of files. But they are paid subscriptions only so no worries about sharing/ratio.  How's the HD contents in rapidshare?

If you know where to look you can find the same files for rapidshare download which you can find in torrents.

is the P400/month rapidshare account premium? did you pay online in pesos? demmet got a good deal on his premium account, he paid only $30 for a 6-month subscription and his download speed reaches up to 1mbps (using 4.3 mbps ISP).

my bittorrent speed average at 80-90 kbps and max at 120kbps when downloading mkv. if the P400/month subscription can only speed up to 100kbps (ave) & 180kbps (max) then it's not a lot of improvement pala.

The only difference is that with a rapidshare premium account coupled with a download manager like orbit you get the max download speed that your ISP gives you and it doesn't matter if you are the only one downloading the file.

With torrents you only get max speeds only if the torrent is well seeded, plus there is no need to seed back. Here in pinas I don't think it is practiced yet but in other countries they throttle the speeds of subscribers using torrents but not with file hosting sites like rapidshare, megaupload and usenet.

sir john,

what is your rapidshare download speed? i am willing to pay the subscription but first i want to know someone who has the same DSL connection speed (1mbps) that i have using rapidshare premium account. if it has vast improvement than my current 120kbps (max) download, then i will plunged into it. but if i can only get 180kbps (max) like oreoshake, i guess i will have to think twice. but good thing with rapidshare is you don't have to seed.

I'm using the PLDT myDSL 384kb/sec plan both for my home and office connections.  With the rapidshare premium account, I ocassionally get a sustained max of 250kbps in my office but at home I only get a sustained max of 180kbps.. Bakit kaya ganito?

@weng: you will just get more consistent speeds with rapidshare, I get around 200 kB/s on average. I would only recommend rapidshare if you download a lot of rare stuff, otherwise using torrents is ok already. If your ISP is 1mbps then your theoretical max download speed is 120kB/s, so you will probably get that speed whether downloading through rapidshare or a well seeded torrent.

@Oreoshake: Are you using a router at home?

ok, hope i will get 2.5x of your 250kbps speed when using a 1mbps dsl with rapidshare's prem acct.

@john5479: does the router affect the internet speed? i am using a speedtouch modem/router/wifi, a cheap all in one unit. it is hooked up to 2 pc, 1 popcorn and 1 eee pc using wifi. my max download speed using bittorrent was tested using the eee pc alone connected via LAN. does using an expensive router such as linksys will give more speed?

Not exactly, just note that using two or more connections with one internet connection divides the bandwidth available i.e. I get a faster download speed if My pc is the only one accessing the internet. Getting a better router just manages network traffic better but won't necessarily increase the speed.

ok, i always download mkv using bittorrent with my eee pc1000 and leave it overnight. before, i tried the popcorn but the download speed is very slow. IMO the eee pc eats less power (due to faster DL) than the popcorn when downloading an mkv.

The EEE pc is ideal for that because of its low power consumption, plus you can tweak it so its optimized for downloading.

hello mga sir i also have the same set up as sir ninjababez hirap sya pag mga 1080p mkv ang naka salang
any advice how to maximize my htpc setup currently using the vga to vga connection mas prefer ko to kasi ang pangit pag HDMI gamit ko text really unreadable tapos ung video from hdmi connection not as flawless compared pag sa vga im using windows XP
sir ninjababez help naman sir

if its exactly the same .. maybe there is something in the background that might be causing it to slow down ..
you can try and startup your computer and leave it for a while until the startup items are already up ..
now check the performance .. observe  for 10 minutes see if its running at 30% - 100% (if it is constant at that speed without you doing anything), then you might want to try and perform a cleanboot (disable all startup items), then check if it yields better result ..
btw its advisable to reformat your HDD and reinstall windows if you have a new motherboard .. ;)

that's right, i think it consumes the same or less power than the popcorn as the eee pc power brick is smaller than the popcorn.

i lost interest in downloading using the popcorn due to slow speed. but i have now an alternative means using the eee pc. i have not even tried port forwarding coz i don't know how to do it.

It just looks complicated initially, but once you get the hang of it you just need to know what ports you need to open and just input that in the corresponding tab in your router setup page. www.portforward.com actually shows how to setup port forwarding for your router model.
