Not sure if it counts, an ACER REVO with XBMC which you can customize to you hearts content :)
It will be a no contest if it counts as most customization of other NMT GUI's are based from it.

you can see a sample shown @ http://xtreamer.net/ultra/ just scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Best is subjective....

But as far as choice/variety is concerned, only the PCH has it. It is the home of YAMJ.

You are only limited by your patience/ability.

I'd say wait for the new generation of Realtek players with the redesigned GUI before making a decision.  There will also be XBMC, Boxee and Android based nmt's coming out in the next quarter, which is also worth looking into.

The new Realtek SDK has already been deployed so what it looks like on the Kaiboer will be similar to other offerings.

Realtek's SDK is a closed platform meaning all the manufacturers do is "skin" them.

Sigma's SDK is a bare bones HDMI driver and player which means a lot more work for it's manufacturer but can be more versatile. That's why WDTV/PCH/Dune players based on Sigma SDK are so different in terms of UI.

HTPCs of course have infinite options in terms of capability for look and feel.

Android? I'm not confident on this platform for media players. Google TV has been encountering stiff resistance due to copyright owners not wanting to play along due to philosophical opposition to Google's corporate philosophy which runs against traditional models of distributing content.

Not really.  The new one has php, Flash and Opera (supposedly has SQLite built-in too but I won't hold my breath).  I think the first device that will have it is the Xtreamer Prodigy. :)
