My 303es also skips. Sometimes the disk trays just ejects by itself. Would that be lens problem also?

The skipping could be cured by adjustment, although it might be due to the age of the CDP. In that case, the lens needs replacement. The opening of the drawer by itself could be due to dirty sensor. The technician would be able to trace where it is located in your machine.

Wala na ring CDPs dito sa Davao. Ang dumadating na lang dito DVD players (from P1K to P2K for good condition units) some are upscale models or relatively new (2-yr old models); DVD player recorders from P2.5k to P10k (problema dito karamihan walang manuals, on-screen menu in Japanese - but some could be adjusted to English display).

Have been there recently. Wala na raw dumarating na CD players, and the traders themselves told me na ayaw na daw nila magbenta na CD players dahil nalulugi daw sila. Kadalasan daw binabalik lang ng buyer dahil defective  Kaya amps na lang meron

Wide soundstage. Does not require me to sit in sweetspot though center fill is more than adequate as well. Chris Botti's trumpet does not sound as metallic compared to my other player. 4x burr brown, 2 x Nichicon muse, 2 x Maroon Nichicons, 20bit. (Thanks to you)  But it is in its character to select well recorded cd's. Agree din ako kay sir Reymer. Bihirang bihira na ok na cdp sa buong pier. In fact, sadly, pati good amps bihira na rin.

Very nice to hear that the Technics CDP is doing well.

Yes very true. Very difficult to spot good CDPs lately (perhaps due to the fact that the lens have lifespan). So naturally, old CDPs will most likely have reading issues.

My reliable Sony CDP-911 which I got from pier 2 years ago still works perfectly. Sometimes I use it non-stop from 9am-5pm, ayaw masira .  Luckily, I chanced upon the exact model 2 weeks ago, got it for 2k mas mataas na daw kasi bihira na magandang cdp.

Sa amps, bihira na talaga maganda. Tama si Rascal, timing-timing lang talaga

Tulong naman mga brothers, I have a Kinergetics KCD-20 vintage cd player. Bigay lang ito at ang problema........ error reading na pag naglagay ka ng cd.

Baka naman mahanapan nyo ako ng Philips CDM-2/10 transport para ma-resurrect ko itong cd player na ito.

Tanong lang, like the Vivtor cd player, is it still using the famous Philips swing arm transport like the CDM 2, 4 or 9?

my brother's cdp got plugged into 220v. Pffft - Dead CDP. He took a chance, ipinarewind sa raon yung transformer.  Swerte, yung primary lang pala ang nasira. CDP is now working great - naconvert pa to 220

this is very easy, as only a small power transformer is involved, just rewind the primary and you are ok, this can be done in raon sidewalks while you wait, in many cases where there is plenty of room inside your player, you can just get a 750mA transformer and tap the 110volts.....we've done hundereds of conversions this way...

Tanong ko lang, ano ang pagkakaiba ng Sony ES CDP Models, gaya ng
222 ES, 333 ES, 555 ES, 501 ES, 502 ES, 228ES(D), 337ESD, 338 ESD.  Aling series ang higher end model.  Example yun bang 338 ESD higher model compared with 333 ES, Or mas mataas yun 333 kasi triple numbers.

CDP 555 ESD, CDP X555ES, CDP 555 ESA, CDP 555ESJ, are not automatically more expensive (higher end) than 338ESD or 337ESD

Actually high end itong mga series na ito pero sa intindi ko:

3 series  - entry level
5 series  - mid level
7 series  - high level

Obvious din kasi dun sa piyesa at build quality nun 3 series na yan.

Mahirap yata makakita ng surplus CDP-7xx ES series. Kahit dito sa Davao wala pa akong nakitang dumating na ganyan. Yung X555ES at 555EsD (saksakan ng bigat ito - almost 15 kgs.) may nakuha ako. I was able to get hold of three 502s, two went to JojoD, yung isa nasa ilalim yata ng kama ko, namimili na ng babasahin. Yung 3xxES series maraming dumating nyan -- I still have 5 or 6 units yata, all working well. May 333 akong dinala sa Maynila last month that went to a member of this forum. Ang pinakagusto ko sa 3xx series yung 338, also very heavy and almost same control features as 5xx series plus wood veneer on sides.

If you base it on price, the 337 ESD and 338 ESD is of the same level with the X55es, x555es, 555 esa, 555 esj.  Mas later model lang yung 555s, and without digital out yata, unlike the 337 ESD and 338 ESD na may coax and digital out.

It goes deeper than that.

I associate the change in pricing of the 555 series more on the currency adjustment. I was a student in Japan in mid '80s, when exchange rate was something like 220 to 240 yen to a US dollar. That exchange rate drastically moved to 140 even approaching 100 yen per dollar in late '80s. If you look at the ES timeline, the price of the 555 series went down to less than 100K yen during that period. They have to adjust their yen prices otherwise they won't be able to maintain their ES export price (if 555 prices stayed at 180,000 yen, that would mean up to $2K retail price in the US instead of its original US price of roughly $1,000 - incl markup)

That pattern by the way resulted in Japanese electronic firms cutting corners to remain competitive in the global market -- export units significantly inferior to those sold in the domestic market (that's why I always want a 100v Japanese domestic hifi not a 220v Japanese hifi.) There are other factors of course, such as economies of scale in producing electronic components resulting in lower price for comparable technology.

yun bang prices ng ES series in the japanese site provided by rascal the domestic or international prices.   Probably what the Japanese did was to have a lower price range for the international market (with lower quality) and higher price range for the domestic Japanese market (with higher quality). That way they can be competitive in the world market, without much changes in the prices in their domestic market. IMHO.

The prices are in yen -- domestic market. They can't lower their international prices since the yen has risen, unless they intentionally lower the quality. But they won't use their ES badge for significantly inferior units -- such as lightweights, or 5 kgs and below, unlike the ES CDPs which are from 8 kgs up. The ES units sold in Europe were almost of the same quality as the Jap models, however.

Rascal is correct in his classification of the ES series.

Thanks for the info.  Tanong lang, Kung yun 3xx series ay entry level, ano po ang tawag sa 2xx series.   May nakita kasi akong 222 escd and 222 es na integrated (yata) amp sa pier.  Are they worth buying.

I have seen a CDP-555ESJ here in Cebu.  Ayaw nga lang basahin yung mga CDs. Ika nga bulag daw.
Nagpa-power up naman.  I have asked the technician if he could fix it.  He replied: only if a unit of similar model arrives, with a good ?laser? module.

is it still possible to salvage this item? Madali lang ba palitan ang laser module nito? or any technique to clean it up and extend its life a bit?

Yan ang lumang entry level model, nuong wala pang digital out. I also have one 222ES here, manipis siya compared with other ES models. Medyo nagluluko ngayon but I think I could fix it, nasobrahan lang ng cleaner fluid or kailangan ng adjustments ang laser unit. That model used to sell at P500 dito sa Davao.

Pinoyhd:

Buy it as-is, say P200. Abrihi ang unit. Naa'y 2 ka variable resistors sa main board. Ang label ana TRK ug FCS, which mean "tracking" and "focus" of the laser unit. You should adjust those two resistors to cure the problem. If despite adjustments, you don't get a good result, that's the time you need a spare laser assembly, which is quite difficult to get (last time I inquired, the quote was roughly $400.)

Thanks Sandawa. The history of surplus (vintage) cds are really very interesting.  My Onkyo cd 100 (I think) is really no match for the 338 ESD that I recently got. 

Eh di mas lalo pa siguro kung 555ESD.  I wonder how the 555 ESD compares to the 338 ESD.
