Is this do-able or possible?
« on: Aug 13, 2011 at 10:56 AM »
The gears:

dvd player with 5.1 analog output (with optical but no hdmi output)
media player with 7.1 analog output (with optical, co-axial and hdmi)
amplifier with 5.1 analog input (no optical, no co-axial)
42" Pana plasma x30 model
4 tower speakers
1 center speaker
1 active subwoofer

The proposed connection:

video -
dvd player to pana via hdmi
meida player to pana via 2nd hdmi slot

audio -
dvd player 5.1 analog output and media player 7.1 (will use 5.1 only) analog output will BOTH SHARE connection via y connector / splitter (either jack or rca cable) to amp 5.1 analog input.

Question:

1. Is this do-able or possible?
2. If yes, what is more recommended, a y rca jack connector/splitter or a y rca wire cable?
3. What are the cons or negatives if this kind of set-up?
4. Both DTS and DD would work?

Obviously, I will not use both dvd player and media player at the same time.

Thanks

not recommended. signal from the active player could fry the opamps of the idle one, or the low output impedance of the idle opamp could appear as a short to that of the active one. it's analogous to feeding a pair of speakers with two amplifiers, only on a smaller scale.

you need a 5-way selector switch for that.

Mark,

or gawa mo na lang ng 5 channel mixer. 2 inputs per channel.

something like this should work...

R1 = R2 = Rf = 100K

you'll need 5 opamps lang, or if in emo mode, 5 triodes para naka tubes!  ;D

I see. So it cannot be done without frying something  :(

1. Where do you find a 5-way selector switch and how much does that usually cost?
2. Aside from this option, any other work around so I can still use my existing set-up with purchasing a new AVR? (of course, aside from constantly changing the rca jacks from the dvd player to the media player and vice versa whenever the other unit will be used)

If you are planning on upgrading your AVR in the future then Mark's suggestion would be the better of the two options.

Ask mo lang si Mark, he can build one for you pronto.  ;)

Will 2 of this from cdr-king work? http://www.cdrking.com/apanel/modules/products/images/large/2623_1.jpg

Interesting. Let us wait for the experts.

What do you call that device and how much does it cost?

Thanks

3  ;)

gave this some rethinking, kung malakas ang 5.1 outputs ng sources pwede na rin insert na lang ng 47k or 51k resistors along the source legs of Y rca wires. that is if a few decibels reduction won't matter much.

Its a 3 input/1 output A/V switch sold for P120 at Cdr-King. I used it before during the 90s to connect the betamax, vhs and laserdisc players to a tv. Without modification, can you use it to connect two 5.1 sources to the AVR analog input without damaging your equipment? :-\

hmm, possible na safe, pero  you know how these switches are, we all tend to forget over time. and damage on either device is possible. hmmm.

dont even try the Y route, seen one that fried an NMT board and was voided by manufacturer.

bro, actually, ok pa din mayRCA switch, kesa mag-Y diretso, sa RCA plugs ng 2 sources.

kung 2 x RCA switch pede rin, basta user knows the risk na dapat both off ang source nya , make the manual switch, and power on.

Thanks for the heads-up Jim. Better safe than sorry.

I decided to let go of my dvd player.

I will just use my NMT and purchase a dvd-rom/writer instead to be attached to the NMT so that there is only one equipment attached to my amp.

Thanks to all  ;D
