sir audiobyte,

i went back today to the store, buti na lang nandun pa yung yamaha ax 1200. nabili ko na rin, and i tried my yamaha remote , OK na everything is working fine na.  ;D ;D ganda nga ng tunog, paired it with my surplus onkyo bookshelves, sound is better than when paired with my surplus Denon PMA 780D. bukas try ko pair with my wharf diamond 8.3.  ;D ;D ;D

BGA VI,

Good! It's really a best buy and a rare find! It uses the same technology as the present high-end Yamaha audio and HT amps now sold outside Japan including the MX-1. I'm using mine to drive my reference pair of Fostex single driver (full range) backloaded horn speakers. But beware! This AX-1200 frequently prevents me from listening back to tubes as they seem to slow down the music compared to this Yamaha.

Enjoy the music then!  ;D
Listen to the music...not to the equipment!

bgavi, congrats din sa yammy amp!!  mukhang collectors item yan ha ganda pa ng chassis i remember alot of yamaha gear once had that brushed aluminum look with the rounded corners... its a timeless modern classic look... i once saw a sound processor & cd player in pier that had that look.

sir akyat, thanks . ok naman yung amp aside from some scratches sa top grill, and may crack sa wood panelling, i plan to replace the wood panelling with real wood kasi laminate lang naman yung original. sound is very good, especially with the surplus onkyo speakers.

baka ibenta ko na yung Denon PMA-780D, baka gusto mo ? Thanks !!! :D

just to provide some info. if you can't get specs of your used gears, click this site: http://www.selworld.com/audio_video/data/index5.html. find the model number of your unit (brands are not shown on the index page), then auction prices would appear. at least you'll have an idea how much they're sold in Japan and could be used as reference in haggling with the merchants.

btw, yamaha of japan is quite helpful with regards to inquiries. i had an ax-1 (100wpc), which looks very similar to ax-1200, bought here in davao for P5T three years ago and yamaha japan gave me all specs when i inquired thru email, including the retail price of my unit when it was sold brand new. i eventually swapped it with a sansui alpha 907 last year.

mga sir, san ba sa pier makakabili ng surplus amp preferably sansui amps? i have a 4 way sansui speaker na medyo matagal ko ng di ginagamit and sayang naman kung ididispose ko siya. i think 12inch iyung woofer niya and may crossover adjustment siya....ang model niya is SP-Z6...di ko rin makita sa mga site iyung specs nito...thanks...

kakagaling ko lang sa port area today.  happened to check if there were sansui amps. i saw 2 sansui amps of the same model. PhP 3,800 ang last price. di ko na chineck kung ok yung sansui amps nila.

maraming naliligaw niyan dito sa davao. i saw one last december, alpha 907i mos but it was selling at P12T. maganda talaga ang alpha 907 sir, malinis at mataba ang tunog. it has the sonic character of the british amps but with the heft of american brands. toroidal transformer is about 30 kilos. BTW this one puts up 160 wpc RMS and sounded a lot better than my Musical Fidelity A-120, Accuphase E-302, and my old 907F.

The Sansui Alpha series was probably the last great amps from the brand.  With its X-balanced config and toroidal transformers, I wanted to get one during the late 80s, but settled  for an Onkyo Integra separates to replace my aging Sansui AUD11. (Obviously I was a Sansui fan.)

Then I became an Onkyo fan.  ;D  If you can also find old Onkyo Integra P301 and M301 or any of their P and M models (for preamp and power amp, respectively) get them too.

mga sir, mahirap maghanap kahit dito sa davao niyan. 'yung 907 maraming naliligaw dito. about 5 years ago, i got a 907F at P3.5T. at that time i also saw 907F-Extra and 907Decade which were being sold at P5T each, i think. two years ago, i swapped my yamaha AX-1 plus P2T cash with an alpha 907. last december, i saw an alpha 907 i-mos but someone bought it at P12T after i haggled and offered P10T.

BTW, i just saw here a Yamaha B-70 which is rated 200wpc (on niji's best Japanese audio list) being sold at P6,000. i have checked this unit at Selworld (Japan's Yahoo auctions) and it's still qouted betwen 20,000 and 40,000 yen. i remember seeing an Onkyo P-1 but lost interest in it when i saw its Selword quote which was really low.

i have a copy of Hi Fi Choice early 1990s and Sansui Alpha 907, similar to what i got, was selling at 1,800 pounds, much more expensive than some high-end british amps. i also have a Musical Fidelity A-120 bought in Pacific Place/HK for HK$5,000 (about US$700) back in July 1999 pero ang layo ng tunog sir. the MF sounded so inferior (siguro kasi 40-watter Class A lang) using my old reliable Epos ES14 (Robin Marshal-made, not Michael Creek.)

BTW, i maybe wrong, but my sources here said these surplus electronics arrive here in Davao thru the banana boats from Japan. since the boats' mission is to pick up bananas and thus arrive with almost nothing, one or two containers filled with junk items are unloaded almost free from freight charges, and released, konting ayos lang sa customs. most of these surplus electronics go to Manila's pier dahil nandyan ang market but some of the upscale models remained here.

Seems googling the model just returns two jap sites.  Try the Toshiba website and check the various regions if they have AVRs.  Then see if they have product archives for old models.

i went to cubao last tuesday, to just simple kill time around a/v surplus shops in the isetan area and i went home with a LUXMAN L-430.

roaming around the a/v surplus shops of pier and cubao have become a new found hobby ever since i started reading this topic, and i even got a list of the most sought afters (hehehe, bagong competition ako sir akyat ang all others).

i bought the L430 primarily on account of sir akyats recommendation,"u cant go wrong with a luxman", and on the fact that on its back an indication is made that it can handle 4 ohms to 8 ohms, on speaker A or B and 4 to 18 ohms for both speaker A and B.

initial impression (after 3days or 9 hours of listening time) of the amp: improve bass, better seperations of instruments, and a WOW! for voice, it is as if the singer is with me, live!

it is driving a pair of hard to drive celestion 3000 speakers, with a 100 watts @ 4ohms power requirement. previous to this, i drive them speakers with a yamaha avr, and the sonic difference is very much obvious, specially on the instrumentations. laki ng ginanda ng goya ko from a very untamed acoustic guitar leads to a tamed yet realistic sounding performance.

what can my fellow surplus fanaticas comment on this amp? O0 O0

thanx in advance.

thank you sir akyat, i was hoping for your reply.

will post the actual pic of the unit soon, medyo not in a very apprecaible condition na yong outside but malinis naman inside. and only 1 of the selector lights is functioning. the wood design located at each of the front edges of the amp is missing.
does your lux sir akyat have this little red lights inside? mine has i think 8 pairs and in one of the pairs there is one light that no longer is lit.

you really cant have your cake and eat it too.

also, and my apologies for being quite naive, i have been wondering eversince i got this amp, what is the function of this and its obviuos effect:

  - Filters:
---Subsonic 30Hz -6db/oct
---Hight-cut 7kHz -6db/oct

and why is it that only the phono input is made of gold in this amp............  :'( :'(waahhh, unfair, im no phono fan as yet.  ;D

thank you.

Rather unfair to compare your luxman to a yamaha.  Like comparing heaven and hell.  ;D No offense meant to yamaha users.

The luxman is a respeted US brand that has been in the mainstream of hi-fi audiophilia ever since.  I fellow audiophile once said, just touching the front fascia is enough  to bring him to fits of ecstacy.  ;D  I was drooling at these brutes at the Audiophile shop in Goldcrest before. Even their casette tape decks had a built and look that was difficult to dismiss, apart from the nakamichi.

Congrats with your purchase.  How I wish those surplus shops were nearer to my place.  sighhhhh
