Diatone is Mitsubishi's audio brand. Mitsubishi had a good reputation in US amp/receiver market before the yen appreciated starting in mid-80s. Before Fostex, Diatone also had the best Japanese audiophile-grade full-range speaker. I've read on the net a few years back some old-timer audiophiles in US and UK were still looking for old Diatone full-range speaker units which I've heard were good for tube amps.

good point AV. but it in my case, as i mentioned, the comparisons were at same-volume levels, by adjusting the variable and fixed outputs of the CDP. that's the beauty of CDPs with two or three sets of analog outputs. that should eliminate gains' deception, as you warned, no overdriving. clarity, in reference to my Musical Fidelity amp, was not present on my other Jap surplus amps while the doubling and tripling of power, as perceived, is due to the fact that my MF only has 40wpc while the Jap integrated amps i'm coupling with tono have over 100wpc rating.

Hi Sandawa,

Will you please elaborate on the above statements. I have a Tono Preamp/Rotel amp combination. At 9:00 volume setting, maxed out na siya. How will a CDP avoid this problem.
I am planning to buy a CDP, what specs should I look for?

Thanks.

Louie

I just bought a surplus stereo amp (from a fellow pdvd member) and am currently using this with a Philips 727k DVD player na may built-in DD/DTS decoder. While the set up gives good audio/stereo performance, i would also like to enjoy DD/DTS sound while watching home video.

The 727k has a 5.1 DD/DTS output. I'm planning to connect the center output of the player to the TV, the front L & R output to the present surplus stereo amp and i'm planning to buy a second surplus amp (i prefer a pro-logic amp) for the surround L & R channel (hopefully this will give a left, center & right surround sound). The LFE (.1) to my active subwoofer.  I wanted to enjoy both worlds (the pure audio and the home theatre), do you think this idea of mine is worth pursuing.
Magkano kaya sa pier ang surplus na prologic amp.

IMHO, the prologic amp will not give you separation of sound from left and right channels because it only produces mono sound (coorect me if im wrong). i would rather recommend a 3 channel amp like av_phile's set-up to pwer up your center and surround speakers.

Pro-logic is two channel-based but it processes sound from those channels to get simulated center and surround sounds. It is somehow similar to the old David Haffler-surround technique where you connect the negatives of two surround speakers, then connect the remaining two hot wires to the left and right channels of the amplifier. The result would be left channel minus right channel sound and right channel minus left channel sound coming out through the two surround speakers. I think av-phile could explain this better. Btw, another possible result of the Hafler sound matrix technique is an inedible fried amplifier since impedance could dive to 2 ohms.

Anybody tried using universal remotes for your stereo surplus amps like Onkyo, Denon?  What brands and models do I have to look for?

I saw this Sony universal remote at 5th Avenue in Alabang Town Center which can be programmed to control stereo amps.  Costs P650.00.  The guy said that it can only work for models '91 and up.  Any suggestions?

even cheap China-made (generic) universal remotes could control Japanese consumer electronic products - from TVs to amps, CDPs, etc. meron nga lang limitations sir, such as power on/off, volume, and index (song selection). okey na rin, kaysa wala. prices of such universal remotes, however, could go down to as low as P120 (here in Davao) in Chinese bazaars.

i am now using the remote of my yamaha rvx-495 to control my surplus technics cdp, this remote is i think within the category of universal as it has programable keys for specific units, e.g. dvd player; cd player; md/tape; etc.

i think at raon you cn have a uni remote for half the price you qoute.

Sir Akyat,

ang balita ko from andrew sevilla of phasetron is that sansui used to be a manufacturer of power supplies, kaya yun ang specialty nila at nag carry over sa amplifier products ang expertise nila dun..... suggestion nga niya kung gusto namin ng magandang transformer para sa tube amp, mangahoy kami ng surplus sansui amp, dahil "annealed" daw ang bakal ng transformer core nun, na bihira na gawin ngayon.

sana makasama yung kenwood L-03 hehehe.

if ever matuloy ang surplus amp shootout, limit natin to about 4-5 lang mga pare, kasi sa laki at bigat ng mga yan parang lipat-bahay na hehehe, mahigpit ang building admin namin sa paglilipat during weekends, para wag lang tayo masita.  ;)
