@wanderlust
thanks sa info bro...

mga sir i have questions regarding  this surplus amps... malaki po ba difference ng sound quality compared sa multimedia speakers like logitech z680 or altec lansing 641... i mean, if i will hook the amplifier to wharfedale 8.1 ano po ang magiging standing nya compared sa logitech z680 or z5300 in terms of sound quality..

i am a total newbie when it comes to hi-fi audio so i came here to ask those people who have auditioned those speakers and compared it to some hi end multimedia speakers like logitech z680 or altec lansing 641...

medyo confused din kasi ako... i have a budget of 10,000 for multimedia speaker and before i was ready to get the logitech z5300 for 10500...... until i saw this thread.... :-\

worth it po ba kung z5300 na ang bilin ko or should i aim for a surplus amp/wharfedale 8.1 setup? gusto ko kasi sa speaker eh yung merong punchy bass...( tight bass yata equivalent nun sa hifi people heheh...) and clear highs...
kaya po ba ng wharfedale yung kind of bass that logitech z5300 delivers?

please help, i am familiar with lots of hi end multimedia speakers pero pagdating sa hifi eh newbie talaga ako so i dont have an idea on how it compares...

thanks....

sir, malayong malayo ang home amp/speaker combi compared with multimedia set up - on all frequencies: from low to high - even if you buy top model Altec or JBL multimedia speakers. unless, you use your PC as source by hooking it to an amp with a good pair of speakers. you're right, audition is the best way to do it, kasi iba't iba ang pandinig natin as well as musical preferences.

i agree with sir sandawa..... they hifi speakers and multimedia set are worlds apart so much so that it will be quite difficult to make an apple to apple comparison, but anyway let me just state the obvious and based on tthe little experience i have had before:

1. multimedia are rated at pmpo's while hifis normally wattage;

2. normally, the former are self powered (meaning plug and play type) while the latter normally needs an amp, reciever to work;

and from previous experience (i owned a cheap 2.1 multi media speaker once before and a self powered creative multi media speaker)

3. for the creative (using the standard PC connection) highs mids are difficult to make out, insufficient bass;

4. for the 2.1, no mids are missing to much bass sound gets muddy after almost six months of use i have to crank the volume all the way up as it doesnt sound as loud as it was before;

5. and for the little auditions i had with altec (not the hi-end new models thought), over all i think the sound is more comparable to a mini component, bass emphasized.

hope this helps a little, still let your ears decide.....

Well, my ideas for this mini-amp is it can be used as a pc amplifier, potable cdp (discman) amp, ps2, coiupled with my infrasonic parabolic microphone you can hear conversations up to 25 meters (so long as you have line of sight), and other wonderful applications.

Pwede na ba marketing??? Aaaarrrhhhgggg.... ang dami ko dapat gawin pero tinatamad ako!!!!!!  >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D

at dahil dito,  i decided to make a surplus amp/bnew speaker setup instead of buying logitech z5300 for 10500...

tanong ko na din po kung ano po marerecommend nyo between these,

Onkyo Integra A-817XX, A-819RS, ... yan lang kasi natandaan ko na models doon....

with 8.1 setup, you'll need a sub if you want to achieve deep bass.

halos parehas lang naman ang tunog ng surplus sa new production amps. i suggest you look for hi-current amps such as harman kardon becoz wharfs speaker daw ay hard to drive. just keep us posted and will try to help you.

narinig ko na pareho, ibang-iba ang tunog nila.... must be properly matched with the CD player and speaker.

relatively, yung 819RS parang naka-equalizer na smiley face, mas malakas ang bass at treble.... yung 817XX mas flat ang frequency response so mas labas ang boses ng singer.

suggest ko demo the amp with ur speaker.

sa 10k ba sir ay kasama na yong amp and cdp dyan? if not kasi youll have several choices either new, pre-owned, or surplus, with the latter youll have enough "sukli" for a surplus amp. but i humble suggest that if your planing to get non-surplus speaker better get the pre-owned ones..... and also youll have less trouble waiting for the break in period for you to hear what your speaker can really do.

you also have to consider the music you prefer listening with, and as punk said youll need to get a sub of you want to achieve deeper bass,specially if youll be getting a bookshelf, extra cost din iyan. basta wag nagmadali bro, take yuor time, audition.....

sa amp naman do the same thing, read the surplus amp thread first before you get yourself one, guaranteed youll never go wrong if you cme to the pier prepared and with a specific idea in mind.

if you intend na pang matagalan na set-up mo, i suggest you get the niji listed amps.... mas mahal pero mas sulit (for onkyos the intergras are there top of the line models) , sir akyat is the expert on this naman.

If I have your money, I will do my hunting this way. Get 8.3 (mga 8k) or 8.2 (mga 6.5k) speakers. Then I will hunt the midi-type amps - the likes of SONY, Sansui, Technics etc. They are rated as high as 150watts in the plate and they are sold for 2.8k wala pa tawad. I have tested the technics (SU-*840 something) / sansui (AE70 model yata) models with my 8.3. The best so far that I encountered in these ranges is the Sony (I got an AX-22 which is my main music amp, connected to a TT). They are very good. These type of amps can drive wharf no sweat.

This way, you can get started investing in a speaker, the best of wharf (8.3), and have an initial amp that can drive it effortlessly and enjoy your music and movies without any subwoofer. Then upgrade your amp later if you get the itch again.  ;D The 2.5k for amp is not much to give up after a year of use, and you can sell it also later. But  am warning you, you might not want to give it up.   >:D

yep,  Diatone is the Audio "arm" of Mitsubishi, and though it is not as active as it was in the 80's , specially with its speakers line, the most famopus of which is the Diatone P-610.

there are plenty of daitones speakers sa pier as sir obet has mentioned, there are amps as well.... i recall seeing a good looking one 2 months ago, but like sir obet has not auditioned it... sadly.

Mukhang maraming Japanese esoteric amp models na pumapasok lately. Finally got, early this month, a replacement for my Yamaha B-70 power amp (early '80s). It was a Yamaha B3 power amp (mid-70s) that looks like a long black solid brick (6X6X14) with huge cooling fins on side walls, poging tingnan at bagay sa WS Tono dahil halos magkasing lapad sila. Ang tunog? puwede na, pero mas pino at malinis ang Accuphase at mas mataba ang Alpha 907.

Also got an Integra P303 preamp (mid '70s) at giveaway price last week. It sounds sweeter, yet subdued, compared with Tono - good for hours of loud-volume listening. It's of minimalist design, limited to volume control and selector buttons for phono, tuner and tape. Nothing more.

Palagay ko kung dadalasan niyo ang bisita sa Pier may makikita rin kayo diyan na weird looking audio. Sayang din, lalo na kung mabigat (sinaksakan ng isang damukal na piyesa at bakal ng mga Hapon para gumanda ang tunog at maibenta ng mahal) at mura pa. Kung hindi maganda ang tunog, pang-display na lang, para hindi talo!
