you can't go wrong by bookmarking this site: http://www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/index.html.
use Altavista Babelfish to translate Japanese to English.

many of the models shown on that site, with original prices of 100,000 yen or more ($900 and above) are among Japan's best audio issued commercially in 70s and 80s. they arrive here (as well as in Vietnam, Indonesia and southern China) as surplus/junk units. as far as i'm concerned, the quality of those units, assuming they're A-1 condition, is better than brand new units/models you buy here at P60K, or more.

if local distributors were able to get these from Japan during their heydays, they'd likely to be quoted at much more than their list prices. such was the case in UK for good Japanese audio imports. for instance, Sansui Alpha 707 in Hifi-Choice 1991 had a 1,600 pounds list price and Alpha 907 had 2,000 pounds (or over P200K). those quotes were higher compared with most of their (British) high-end models. remember that British audio sold here now comprises mostly entry to low-middle models. i bought my Alpha 907 at P8K here in Davao two years ago, Alpha 707 was available here a month ago at P4K (warehouse as-is price - could go up to P7K in retail shop) and Alpha 607, with a few units still unsold, at P5K, good condition, shop price.

same here in Davao. limited na, di tulad ng dati. pero sa liit ng market dito (1/8 ng Metro Manila population), hindi ganun kabilis mabenta ang good models. lalo na pag nakatiyempo ka ng pagbubukas ng container van, kahit wala kang plano, mapapabili ka.

sarap lang sa surplus, yung budget for one brand new unit, kayang ibili ng 10 more powerful and superior units. that's assuming these are in A-1 condition. basta may available na Jap surplus, except speakers, malamang hindi na ako bibili ng brand new.

sawa na 'ko sa mahal. my first true hifi system in 1982 cost me an equivalent of 7 months salary. i bought my MF120 at HK$5,000 and Epos at HK$6,000 in Hong Kong brand new five years ago, my Accuphase e-302 discounted (old stock) at 100,000 yen in Tokyo in mid '90s (original list price 250,000 yen). nag-sisisi ako sa Musical Fidelity, pero hindi sa Epos at Accuphase.

hi relay_70

i'm not sure if you've been thru this yet, but if not, check this out. according to these sites, the Marantz Esotec SC series are pre-amplifiers not amps. hope this helps..   :)

oops! sorry po typo error...yep its a pre amp sir.. actually nasakin na ang unit... grabe, nastock lang yata to dun sa bahay nung hapon..walang gasgas,  kapal ngalang ng alikabok..
i am currently hooking it up on my onkyo integra 817xd....

based on the site you mentioned, im happy to know that esotec series was indeed a high end model from Marantz, a rare piece...  kung meron lang sana kapares na amp to.. like yung PM-8..

pero i still have to test this... considering na 1980's pa yata to... baka nadegrade narin ang mga Pots nito...

Hello, question lang po. May budget ako na 3K, makakabili na ba ako ng matinong amp sa pier for this amount of money? Anong model/unit ang makukuha ko for this? Or should I just go for a NOS (new old stock) na NAD 310 for 5K? Eto yung specs ng NAD:

SPECIFICATION - NAD 310 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER
Power Amplifier Section
Stereo Mode
CONTINUOUS AVERAGE POWER OUTPUT INTO 8    20 W
(Min. power per channel, 20Hz-20kHz, both
channels driven, with no more than rated
distortion)
Rated distortion (THD 20Hz-20kHz)       0.05%
Clipping power       25 W
(maximum continuous power per channel)
IHF dynamic headroom at 8       +3 dB
IHF dynamic power    8    :    40 W    (17 dBW)
4    :    60 W    (17.8 dBW)
2    :    80 W    (18.7 dBW)
Slew rate          >20 V/usec
Damping factor (ref. 8    50Hz)          >100
Input impedance       N/A
Input sensitivity (for rated power into 8    )    1 V
Voltage gain    X 60(35.6dB)
Frequency response    20Hz - 20kHz    + 0.3 dB
-3dB at 10Hz/70 kHz
Signal/Noise ratio, A weighted    Min. vol.. 100dB ref. 1W
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion, 20Hz-20kHz,    <0.05%
from 250mW to rated output)

Any other suggestions?

Definitely, the NAD unit should free you of any risk involved in getting surplus amps.  But for 5T, I'm pretty sure you can get a more powerful surplus amp with specs that are no different, if not better, than that NAD.  Bear in mind that many of those surplus amps were Top-Of-The line units during their time.  It's risky alright, the chances of getting lemons are higher.  But once you get a good one, by most accounts here, it can prove to be a great value for the money.

Marantz 2270 ..one of the good, if not great and popular models of the old Marantz line

I dont think its practical to get receivers from Japan since the tuner sections does match with the Philipine settings...you wont get all the stations

So what units/models should I be looking for? The room size is about 30 sqm. I'm interested in what amps I can get for 5K? 4K? Even 3K? At the least, I can have a short list with the amps I should be watching out for when I go back.

Last I visited the pier there were many Sansui and Victor amps, with a sputtering of Yamaha and Teac brands.  It's dificult to say what's out there, you just have to visit the place as new stocks that come in are unpredictable.  Sometimes you's be lucky to spot a good one, in other times, they're just so-so.  I would suggest that you be accompanied by someone knowledgeable in getting surplus amps at the pier.  Maybe some members here would be willing to act as an advisor/guide for you.

I overlooked your room size which is above the typical.  Unless you have a very sensitive speaker in the 90+db range, a 30sqm room could require more than 70watts RMS/ch of stereo to fill it with enough headroom for clean sound.  Suggest you get a 100wattRMS stereo amp.  There are many at the pier going around 5T which you can haggle for around 4T or less.  Is this for music only?  What's your speakers?  Do you want room-filling sound? DO you play  loud?  No neighbors close by?

I have Infinity and JBL Control bookshelves that I was planning on using, the room is actually a small bar - just for piped in music.

sir gibson,
where can i get the nad c310(for 5k) you mentioned. i have AE evo1 and im planning to have a separate set-up for audio using the evo1.

im not experienced kasi on surplus amps, i might get lousy ones. maybe somebody here can give me a suggestion what to look for if ever i go to pier. di na siguro kailangan na malakas na amp, as long as it can drive my speakers decently.

thanks.

5k lang un price ng NAD C310? 7.5k ang kuha ko sa pre-owned NADC300 with remote.

mga sir,

tanong ko lang po kung familiar ba kayo sa Sansui A-707 integrated amp? maganda ba ang review nito during her time? nakita ko to sa bahay ng tito ko at na niya ginagamet, kaya hiningi ko. dala daw to nya galing saudi sometime in the 80's. ilang wpc po tong amp na to? sinubukan ko palang gamitin, medyo malakas din pero ang lakas lang uminit. onetime nag shutdown sya sa sobrang init siguro tapos nung lumamig na ok na naman. is this a serious defect on the amp or just a normal thermal protection that goes off?

salamat :)
