sana maka tyempo rin ako ng lv-103.  i wonder kung nagkakaron pa nito sa davao

Luxman hybrids hardly showed up in Davao. btw, those Luxmans were already part of the Alpine catalog and while it was quite popular here in RP, that series was not a big hit in Japan. LV-103, for instance was sold brand new at only 79,000 yen, way below the price of a pure solid state amp at same power range. current re-sale value of LV-103 in Japan is about 5,000 yen or $45.

what only $45!  hmm mura naman sa kanila.  most of the amps ba in pier came from japan? and madalas ko rin mabasa yun name na chatty store in pier, but i havnt seen it.  sila lng ba ang medyo trusted store in pier?

Regarding the Luxmans,

I am not a Luxman expert except that I have  4 Luxman amps i can compare. Ever since Sir Sandawa advised me on the great quality of Luxman amps I have been on the lookout for them...

1). M120a power amp, Duo-Beta, 2x120W, (1980-83
2). L400,
3). L3 integrated amps, 2x42W, (1980)
4). and LV105u hybrid 80WPC into 8 ohms (105w into 6 ohms), with low impedance compatibility
5). even a nonworking LV100 i got dirt cheap. (I initially thought the LV100 was an L100. Its a different dog pala altogether.)

The m120a is a great unit. I am still looking for a pre-amp though. The unit has separate controls for left and right so it can be used without a pre-amp. I use it with an old Citation eleven preamp.

I gave away the LV100 to a brother. He's trying to convert it into a gainclone amp.

The L400 and L3 are well used. The Bass seem inordinately low, solid and loud for the low wattage of these two amplifiers. I use them in small rooms. Sometime ago, my brother used them for a biamp setup that worked fairly well. (This is the kind where he just connects a tweeter plus midrange to one amp and the bass woofer to the other amp. No separate crossover was used.)

The LV105u i really haven't used a lot. There's a problem with the balance controls (which doesn't work) although the amp seems already set with equal left and right channels. I don't use this unit often because of the balance problem. It might get worse. And yes, I've also seen comments against this amp. It seems that some afficionados consider the tube part as just a commercial strategy since the tubes do not really enhance the sound. A review in Axel's Vintage Knob debunks these claims:

Read up on Axel's vintage knob site specially :

http://www.thevintageknob.org/LUXMAN/LV107/LV107.html# and you'd get a better idea of the LV10+ series.
Click on CN to read Zeljko's in depth review of the LV10+ series. Zeljko debunks some misconceptions about the hybrid amps in his review. To quote Zeljko's...

"In 1984 Luxman stunned everyone by introducing a mass produced tube-MOSFET hybrid integrated amplifer, into a completely solid state dominated world of mainstream audio - the LV-103 [1st one was the LV-104?]. It was then followed with a tube hybrid CD player, the D-105. This unique line of components persisted in Luxman's lineup until 1992 and finished with the hard to find LV-107u. In 1986 Luxman gave it's already existing LV-105 model a full overhaul and re-introduced it as the LV-105u. It is widely accepted that the design really came into it's own with the untroduction of the u-postfixed amps, the LV-105u being the flagship until the LV-107u was introduced."

"The long production run of the series, however, shows that if the Brid units didn't make LUX a bestselling brand, it helped keep that glorious name fairly in sight until the early/mid 90s... The 1984/85 introduction of the LV-104 was received with a "Good Design" award from the japanese industry."

This unit is in the Japan Nisi site also.

Other Luxman sites:

http://www.audioinvest.no/luxman/luxamp.htm

http://my.reset.jp/~inu/ProductsDataBase/Products/LUX/LUX.htm

All in all Luxmans are solid investments in my humble opinion. I've seen an 400 and an L410 being sold the past weeks in the pinoydvd forum. The L400 and L3 normally sells for 3500 up at the pier. Theres a LUXMAN POWER TUBE AMP. A3700, mint condition being sold at Buyandsell for 30,000.
A Luxman pre-amp C1010 was on sale at pinoydvd for 7000+ i think.

Here's my data base on Luxman asking prices at the buy and sell magazine the past year (s)

Regarding Little Chattys...

Chatty's carry basically Japanese surplus units. I don't think quality of surplus units sold differ much among the stores other than the fact the Chatty's have more units. I often see a technician working on premise though at Chatty's and also in a small store inside the covered supermarket. This would imply that units with problems can be repaired quickly.

I would say that Chatty's has the largest inventory of surplus units at the pier now. I've observed though that their price is often higher than that of the other stores. They have several attendants so you can fairly quickly have the unit you want auditioned set-up and tested. The mother, father and son owners are usually there so pricing decisions are made quickly.  I bought my Yamaha NS690, two SONY Vfets, 2 Sony ES CDP, a Victor SX3, a Sansui AUD707GExtra, a yamah ca1000 from this store alone.

A tip if you are into collecting surplus gears...

try befriending the store handlers... slip them fifty bucks or a hundred bucks once in a while. This tip will get back to you ten fold when you are bargaining for lower prices. Get their cell numbers and txt them once in a while to get updates on what's available...Learn to sift between the sales talk and the facts they'd be peddling you... have the units been repaired? driver problems? amp repairs etc?

Saw a nice victor amp yesterday, its M-3030, dual mono, listed at Niji's. Tinuro ko sa tito ko, kinuha na kanina. Price is a bit steep, P8,500, pero maganda sa amp is that it's mono-mono, then parang class A at a certain output level. Can't get a grip on the babelfish translations.  ;D

latest acquisition ==== SANSUI AU-607

just wondering though, why does it have 2 transformers? separate kaya power supply for each channel?

and why does the equivalent US version (AU-517) has a power consumption of 345 watts while the jap verson is only 185 watts? both are rated 65wpc into 8 ohms looks identical inside and out naman  ???

Reposting what I asked in another thread. I hope you guys could help me out.

I saw a surplus yamaha being sold here, and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the unit. Its a Yamaha AVX 1000 DSP.

Not really sure if its a good receiver, but I would really want to know if it is.

Is this good for a starter setup?   ???

sir san mo ba nakita yan Yamaha AVX 1000 DSP? dito ba sa PDVD, parang hindi ko yata nakita, anyways I have a Yamaha DSP 2000 and when I checked the tech specs ng AVX 1000 na target mo. hindi siya published ng Yamaha similar din sa DSP 2000 ko. kasi limited yan sa Japan nang lumabas.

anyways magkano po ba binebenta sa inyo? kasi I got my DSP 2000 sa thrift shop here for 5k. pero sir, about the limited DSP series ng japan, eh kung bibilihin mo sure mo din na may kasamang remote, dahil lahat ng adjustments (eg. room size, spkr level, liveliness etc etc) eh sa remote lang na aadjust. hindi siya naadjust sa actual amp/reciever unit.

pero sa performance naman like the exclusive Yamaha DSP's, power dynamic range etc... eh panalo naman dahil hindi lahat ng AVR sa market meron nito...

happy AVR hunting...

Actually I saw it here in a surplus shop in Davao. Pero binebenta rin at 5k. Medyo may kamahalan nga ano if yours was at 5k. There were some Denon Amps din eh, check ko lang ulit model number. I'll try to go hunting again. :)

audio amps have "fads" just like jeans, dati uso yung bell bottoms nung araw, ganyan din sa amps, pioneer and others also came out with simmilar designs, at the time they thought that using 2 small transformers rather tthan a big one will improve sonics, and also make for a low silhouette design. times keep on  changing and with it amp design changes also.
That's OK, you can like or dislike anything you choose. That's the wonderful thing about the freedom

try mo din audition yung DSP ng yamaha? kase kaya ako napa bili nito, dahil bukod sa perfrormace medyo matibay ang pagkakagawa (eg. DSP A1, AX1, AZ1, AZ9) puro flag ship yan ng yamaha. nung compare ko yung RXV series vs DSP. yung DSP lahat naka gold post, Rca etc. tapos yung built niya pulido talga ang pagkakagawa. unlike sa ibang RXV series medyo mukhang mas market ang pagkakagawa.

ang mahirap lang talga sa DSP ng japan eh limited pati tech papers ang hirap hanapin. pero for me DSP japan series are gold to be find dahil rare ito. (limited)

sa may Quiapo church there are PIER jeepney there then it will pass manila cathedral, lalabas ng intramuros tapos baba ka sa may BIR.  then pasok ka sa loob ng malaking white gate. PIER na yun tapos pasok sa loob. hanggang dulo yun. you will see electronic sewing machine, TV's, window type AC, tapos sa bandang dulo. mag tanong ka kung saan yung little chatty's dun maraming choices, pero actualy madami din nagkalat dun. makaka tyempo ka ng maganda.
PCCian... kumbento boys!

SANSUI B-2102 power amp - 200wpc

Although not acquired from the pier, still qualifies as surplus since I got it from a used audio store in Dau

Bought as is because left channel is busted. For 2k, i think its worth the gamble. Nasa doctor na as of now  ;D

similar to the B-2101 in built and appearance (i think)

hehe its really quite heavy ;D Actually, yung matching pre-amp nito dapat ang bibilhin ko pero someone got a hold of it before I did. Dahil ayaw ko mabasyo, I ended buying the power amp instead;)

And you sir, is a true blue t-amp fanatic na!!! Kung may extra dough pa, will probaly get your Sony ES amp para monoblock na. Pahinga muna sa acquisition ng amp afterwards hehehe

if you can make both channels work at original configuration, you have hit the jackpot! that's still selling at over 70,000 yen used in Japan, almost at par with my Alpha 907iMos Limited. BTW, the more advanced B2102 Mos Vintage is even more expensive at roughly 90,000 yen, used.
