Your email name sounded like you're a Filipino, even a namesake of a professor at the Univ. of Chicago. Anyway, on behalf of the guys here, welcome. You'll find some postings here, in English, on the Sansui Alpha series. There's another site here -- Pinoy Audio forum where I used to be very active -- where Sansui alpha series amps were also discussed. Outside of Japan, I think a lot of alpha series amps were also sent to Vietnam. I was told by traders here since two years ago that the best vintage Jap hifi units are now being shipped to the port of Shanghai in China since they could sell them there at almost brand new prices

There were  several others from Audio Karma, aside from you, buying directly from Japan. I've been getting PMs since last year from guys in Croatia (or Yugoslavia?) and Germany, probably thinking I'm Japanese. There's also an English guy in his early 30s who called me up once from Hong Kong (he works with a bank, shuttling between HK and London) who made a side trip to Tokyo to buy some audio stuff late last year. He was interested in vintage Accuphase and Sansui alpha series amps.

Anyway, give my regards to Axel Dahl, a legend in Audio Karma, who also lives in Paris. Me and some other guys here used to communicate with him on our collection of Japanese amps.

Terii, thanks for the clarification. You'll find members of this forum very hospitable. Should we find those models in the local market, we'll inform you. I'm sure guys here -- including those who trade their equipment -- would sell them way below Hifido prices.

In the meantime, keep those posts coming. We want your impressions on Japanese vintage hifi specifically those you now own.

Yes, it's a good amp, in fact top of Sansui's regular line in late '70s to early '80s-- reasonable price would be from P6K to P8k from surplus sources, but could go as high as five figures since current resale price in Tokyo goes as high as $700. It's a generation below the Alpha 907 series, however. The original AU-D907 is almost a collector's item and could be a bit more expensive. The D907X, and Limited editions are generally more expensive compared with the regular D907F or D907G.

If it's AU-D9, it's the exported (US) version of AU-D707. In that case it should sell at only about P4k, no more than P5K. Rated 90wpc to 110wpc. Good enough, but not top of the line.

Mga sir,

how about an ONKYO Integra A 701D? ok lang po ba bilhin ito ng around 6k?
good condition po yung unit and weighs more than 20 kgs.
kaya lang meron po syang digital input (toslink and coaxial) pero
walang lumalabas na tunog
when i tried connecting it w/ my dvd player.

your insights will be highly appreciated.

maraming salamat po.

I think P6K is okay for an Integra A-701D, although I'd probably haggle for a lower price. Check Hifido or Yahoo Japan to have an idea on its used pricing.

very nice, the AU-111 Vintage 1999.. good luck on your quest  :)

what i have is the grandfather of AU-111, manufactured April 1966 if my interpretation of the serial number is correct.  ;D
it has the two-part, plastic-metal knobs which i think was the first generation of the model.

Thank you very much sir Sandawa,

How about the stepdown transformer to be used sir? the unit is rated @ 215W,
would it affect its performance if i only use a 300W transformer?
and the digital inputs sir, do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?

again, thank you very much.

again, thank you very much.

The prices of 300-watt and 500-watt transformers differ by only a couple of hundred pesos. If I were you, I'd buy the 500-watt transformer so you'll have enough just in case you'd buy a bigger amp a year or two from now. "Panther"'s 100-v transformers are usually quoted at around P1,200 in Manila, but if you go to small hardwares where inventory moves slower compared with big retailers, you may find 500-watt 100-v transformers sold at P950. That's the pricing here in Davao from those outlets. "Zebra" with 100-110v outlets is a little bit expensive but the "Highly" brand which is also solidly built is priced like Panther's. Better to have a volt-ohm meter handy since you should check your voltage regularly. I do it every other day to see if my regulators are doing their jobs and if our utility firm here is supplying power at tolerable level.

RE: the non-working digital output, check for small switches in your units; also try the coaxial jack. I had a similar experience with my generic China-made DVD player. I found out it was the generic DVD player's digital output at fault.

That's the same as what I have. I'd say it's cheap at that price since alpha 907 iMos Limited's new quotes in Hifido exceeds 100,000 yen. Difficult to ship from Baguio to Davao though. It weighs over 30kgs.

Here is how my alpha 907iMos Limited looks like:

Euro 129 is equivalent to 8,500 Philippine pesos. We could buy here a similar  transformer (for Japan 100v/1,000va capacity) at P2,500 and an automatic voltage regulator (for Japan 100v/1,000va capacity) from P4,000 to P5,000.

Why are you asking. Is there anyone selling an a907KX?

In 1999, I saw an a907KX here in Davao being sold at P12K. I haggled up to P9K I think but the trader who eventually became a friend said P10K last price. I said no, but I went back the following day since I can't sleep thinking about it. Unfortunately, I was told the unit was sold just a few minutes after I left the previous night. Early this year, I had some beer with that trader and when I inquired who bought the alpha907KX and at how much, he said it was sold at P10.5K to a guy in shorts who needs a 400-watt amplifier for a videoke bar in a remote town somewhere in Cotabato.

To tell you frankly, I don't have golden ears unlike many members of this forum. I'm lucky to hear good Sansui and Luxman amps, thus the bias. Had I gotten hold of a great Onkyo, Pioneer, Marantz or other brand amp, they'd probably be on top of my lists too. Re: receivers vs. amps, I don't know, but my main interest is on Jap vintage gear and as far as I know, they did not release receivers in Japan that were highly acclaimed by serious enthusiasts..

Oh i see.....

I'm new to this hobby,
When i bought my first audiophile grade bookshelf speakers, an aurum cantus leisure 2sv,
i thought that using my Pioneer Elite a/v receiver will be fine, until i got a chance to buy a
Sansui 9090db. This time the sound improved a lot when another great opportunity came
along, i had a chance of buying a JBL L112. This releases the great ability of the 9090db to
hear what it is capable of.... reproducing music with authority throughout the entire frequency
range. Clear crisp highs, open natural mids, powerful lows my chest can feel.
From then on, i matched my 9090db with my JBL L112. I use it whenever i want to listen to
orchestra, marching bands, perez prado, and the likes...
So as to the Aurum Cantus Leisure 2SV? It is now mated by another jewel, for i long been
looking for an amp that can satisfy my somewhat critical ear when it comes to vocal
recordings. I'm now enjoying listening to audiophile vocal recordings via my
Aurum Cantus Leisure 2SV and my latest catch....Marantz Esotec PM4....

Sir Sandawa,

Hope you can give me tips on what particular models of vintage solidstate amp are worth owning.....

100 wpc and above and
low powered amps that is good for vocals

Ti'll then sir ;)
