Topic: Pls help in choosing surround speakers

I'm completing my HT setup and I've narrowed down my choices to 2 bipole/dipole speakers for my surrounds:


Speaker 1: Monitor Audio BXFX
* 1 x 140mm mid/bass
* 2 x 25mm tweeter
* Different brand than my LCR
* Cheaper (around P15k)
* Color is walnut, which is close to the color of my LCR (wenge)

Speaker 2: Paradigm Surround 1
* 2 x 110mm mid/bass
* 2 x 25mm tweeter
* More expensive than speaker 1 (around P26K)
* Same brand as my LCR, but different series
* Color is black


Questions:
1. With regards to the mid/bass driver, which is better: 2 smaller drivers (110mm) vs 1 bigger driver (140mm)? again for surround use only. Are there any pros and cons of having 2 smaller drivers than 1?

2. I'm planning to stand mount these speakers because wall mounting is not an option. typically, stands have rectangular top base, meron din bang stands na medyo half-circle (or half oval) ang shape ng top base?

3. I know most will recommend same brand for the entire setup, but for surrounds does it matter? actually speaker 2 is the same brand as my existing LCR, pero newer series so I don't know if that is an issue too. Nabasa ko kasi dapat same brand and series for tonal matching.

4. Kung kayo ang tatanungin, importante ba sa inyo na pare-pareho ang color? My LCR is wenge. Speaker 1 is walnut (almost close to wenge), speaker 2 is black.

5. Around 11k yung price difference, is it worth it? I have budget for the price of speaker 2 by the way.

Both are equal performers based on reviews. If cost and color is my priority, I will be choosing speaker 1, pero ibang brand sya. Kung priority ko naman e same brand to go with my LCR, speaker 2 will win per mas mahal sya.

For surrounds, yes it matters that they are the same brand and same series. If someone says otherwise they probably haven't experienced it themselves.    I've experienced both scenarios, using a different brand surround speaker and then later on having the same brand and series of surround speakers. It's a world apart!

Sorry sir.  I thought 7.1 system ang gagawin mo.  For a 5.1 system, the surrounds if possible should be same brand and series as that of your fronts and center.  For a 7.1 system, the rear surrounds may not necessarily be of same brand as your other speakers.

have you auditioned both using the same material? In my experience, my svs SSS-01 surrounds integrated well with my focal fronts. For effects lang naman yung surrounds eh. Kung mas maganda yung effects coming out of the MA compared to the digm using the same material ok na ito, nakatipid ka pa HTH

26k can already get me used stereo speakers like: dali ikon, totem, epos, triangle or dynaudio. *drool*

i choose option 1 if those are the only options. bipole surrounds are nice, but spending more than necessary to just hear the audience clap, a door knock, a plane whiz by or a musical passage play is not at all practical imo. i'd go for an atom to maintain model similarity on the cheaper side. or ask the diymaster to make me a bipole with his 8 inch coax and with my choice of vinyl color.  sa tingin ko pwede ka na mag 7.1 niyan.    

nah...but if you have the money then you have the right to splurge.

If they are using the same tweeter as the fronts it should be no problem, however if the tweeter changed in the newer version...  Only you can be the judge if they sound alike.

Yung paradigm pa lang naaudition ko, kasi yung MA walang stock sa shop. Sir anong ibig sabihin ng same material? You mean gears? Unfortunately nasa magkaibang shops yung mga speakers at iba yung amp at cables na ginamit. Thanks for your inputs!

The tweeters are different (my existing fronts and the new Paradigm surround1) according to the website. The dipole speaker that has the same tweeter as my fronts are the Paradigm ADPs. Why didn't I included this on my list    My new list is now:

3. Paradigm ADP 190

I was considering the Atoms before, not until I heard the bipoles/dipoles. Iba yung enveloping effect e   The Atoms aren't cheap either   which reminds me of Paradigm ADP (dipoles). I'll review the ADPs too.

yeah, i like the idea of bipole speakers too. parang auto 7.1 ka na niyan. had mine made by diy_master. i know the 8 drivers made branded bipoles expensive so i got in touch with the diy'er. i was referring to a used atom pala cuz i never buy bnew speakers unless i have it customized.

You should also consider the Polk Audio FXi A4 or A6 as surround speakers.

You should also consider the Polk Audio FXi A4 or A6 as surround speakers.

I also scouted for Polks (A4), but the shop carrying Polks here in SG doesn't have A4 nor A6  What I am curious about MAs and Polk surround speakers are the bipole/dipole selector switch. I can switch to bipole or dipole whichever suits me

Yeah, its on my top list now  problem is, since this is quite an old model, the authorized dealer here in SG is not carrying it anymore. Either I look for used (which I dont mind), or buy online. thanks!

but anyway, here are some sample pics. drivers can vary as to what diy_master has available. these are old models that may not reflect his newer designs if he has any. they cost approx 20-25% of the digm surround 1. mine are 5 inch drivers and not the ones on the pix.
