^Something's fishy about the Knicks not wanting to match the Lin deal.

In other news, Kris Humphries signs with the Nets with a 2 yr $24m deal.

Who's afraid of the luxury tax?  :o

Wow! Now that's overpaying!     :o

^Something's fishy about the Knicks not wanting to match the Lin deal.

rumor out of NY is that the Knicks are preparing to make a run at CP3 in next year's offseason

that's probably one of the reasons why Knicks owner James Dolan is hesitating on Lin.

but for Jeremy Lin fans who want him to stay with the Knicks, here's a glimmer of hope...

How Knicks Can Avoid Poison-Pill 3rd Year Of Lin Contract
July 17, 2012 10:05 AM

Quote
If the player’s salary payments are spread-out using the Stretch provision, the team may elect to stretch the salary cap charge to match2. For example, if two seasons remain on the player’s contract when he is waived, and the payment is spread-out over five years per the Stretch provision, then the team may elect to spread-out the salary cap hit over those same five years.

In other words, the Knicks will have the option after the 2013-2014 season to waive Jeremy Lin, take his third-year $15 million salary and spread it out with its cap hit over the following three seasons. In each of those three seasons, the Knicks would have $5 million of dead money on the cap. Doing that would all but eliminate the insane luxury tax payment the Knicks would have to endure in 2014-2015, which is supposedly stopping them from re-signing Lin.

basically..

if the Knicks match Lin's offer sheet, they have 2 years to figure out if he's worth all that money.

in the 3rd year, they can waive him or keep him.

Kris Humphries - 2 years $24 M. Is he really worth that much?

^ Maybe the Clippers guaranteed more playing time for him? Hope the Lakers land Jamison then.

The Clippers now have three solid bench players in Hill, Odom (yung walang toyo) and Crawford. They just have to keep Blake "I'm not Shawn Kemp" Griffin healthy.

Some interesting (and funny) NASDAQ news ......

MSG Co's (the NY KNICKS mother company) stock price went down $0.64 ..... amid the impending departure of Jeremy Lin to the ROCKETS.

"The 64-cent drop in MSG stock equates to a market capitalization loss of about $49 million ..... MSG has already lost more money in market capitalization than the cost of Lin’s contract."

yan yung mali ng knicks. aside from basketball being a sport its also a business. sabihin na natin overpaid nga si Lin pero if you think of the money he can rake in from merchandise, ticket sales, tv coverage etc..

he became a world wide icon in just a few months, what more kung full season sya maglalaro. his contract is just a small grain compare to the money they can earn off of him for the organization.

I think Lin will thrive in Houston. He's the only "star" there, based on their current line-up - unless Houston manages to trade for an all-star.

There's still much prestige in the NBA ...... it still showcases the best athletes playing a universal sport.

However, I agree with the opinion (LBJ's among many) that there are too many teams in the NBA ...... IMO the problem lies more with the fact, that there are many "inherently disadvantaged" teams in the league right now e.g. frugal team owners, geographical, tax rates, stadium issues, etc ...... of course all of this with the backdrop of the US economic downturn.

These disadvantages plays a huge part in the parity seen in the NBA right now.

Aside from a few misses, David Stern has actually done a great job through the years ..... the NBA's salaray cap & free-agency rules are some of the most stringent and detailed in all of pro sports.

IMO the NBA is moving into a much better direction ...... the new CBA helps in controlling salaries and is probably the league's best attempt to restore parity by way of the new punitive luxury tax rules.

The aim of the new CBA is already evident ex. KNICKS had to let go of Lin, HEAT/LAKERS only able to give out vet-minimum to fill their spare roster slots, BULLS had to trade Korver & let some assets leave, etc.

Part of the new CBA rules cripples teams that are overpaying and/or stocking too much talent by making them pay through stiffer tax penalties if they go over the salary cap however that still doesn't stop teams that are raking in the money aside from the gate receipts they have merchandising, sponsorship, exclusive TV Deals etc. Just recently LA LAkers landed an exclusive TV deal with one of the better known networks in the US that is worth 9 digits. Every time they air a Laker game there will be millions that will watch the game from the US and possibly millions more overseas (like us). TV network earns money from the advertisers, advertisers increase sales through the marketing and at the end of the day...everybody happy. Now can you foresee a similar TV deal like that being offered to Minnesota? Or how about Golden State? Both have a very small fan base and might not draw the numbers of viewers every time they air a game.

To add to that we have team owners that simply do not care about the taxes namely Allen of the Blazer ( one of the richest men on this planet) and Russian billionaire Prokhorov who can easily earn the taxes that he will pay to the NBA in just one week!

There goes your imbalance...like what they say: the haves and the have nots.

Here is an example of the Haves

Paul Allen of Microsoft. Ranked  one of the 50 richest men. owns one of the worlds biggest yachts that is equipped with two helicopters, two submarines and a basketball court. To add to that he also owns another yacht that is one of the biggest in existence as well. He also owns an extensive collection of military airplanes from the past like bombers, fighter planes etc. he keeps those planes in flying and showroom condition and he doesn't even know how to fly a plane. He just watches those planes being flown by his stable of pilots and of course parked inside his private hanger. If there are people happy with collecting model airplanes then there is an individual who collects the real deal.

He also singlehandedly sponsored the only privately funded manned satellite to orbit the earth and is now funding research and development of the only privately funded aircraft that can fly to space, orbit the earth and come back...in short he is funding a space program that 85% of the worlds nations can't even afford.

You think he will lose sleep over a 25 million dollar tax imposed on him because he wants to keep his team competitive? I guess not. Portland Trailblazers is only a toy for him and entertainment for his guests.

Yup, the new CBA & the league cant prevent any team owner who actually wants to spend, despite the huge new tax rates ...... but the over-spending has generally subsided the past few years.

The LAKERS Buss has somewhat controlled his spending ...... moreso wth the MAVS Mark Cuban (they're actually under the cap now) ...... even the usually over-spending KNICKS, just let go of a fan favorite because of the massive tax hit they'll take 2 years from now.

As for the NETS new Russian owner ...... he's extremely generous now (the NETS are at $71M now! .... just for their starting five of Williams, Lopez, Wallace, Johnson & Humphries) since he wants to make a big splash as a first-time owner, especially one with a land-deal on the side and one who'll operate at the media capital of the world.

He'll probably subside with the spending a few years down the road ...... same blueprint as the aforementioned Mark Cuban.

Like I said, the CBA looks like the best attempt of the league to restore some parity ..... doesnt guarantee it'll do the job - but it's better than nothing at all (see the MLB).

Correct. That's why a lot of the players did not like the initially proposed rules of the CBA hence the lock out last year. It's an attempt to spoil the party that they have been enjoying for so long so to speak. Imagine a dude like Rashard Lewis who brings very little to the table snagging a 100 million dollar plus deal a couple of years back? Or how about agent zero who managed to rip off Washington with a similar deal and is now out of the league. Those days are long gone now with the current CBA. Contract offers are closely being studied and players will be payed accordingly to their current performance.

But still....we have those people who can blatantly assemble not a big three but a big 10 if they wished.

90% of that Brazilian team won't even break the starting lineup in the NBA let alone become an All star while the USA team is made up of "unstoppable freaks of nature" that, according to some, cannot be guarded by MJ or Pippen. yet they fell behind by 10 in the first half and won by a meagre 11 points
