Sakin winning a championship does not solely define the greatness of a player. But it does enhance a player's greatness. There are note-worthy players who have won only 1 championship in their careers but are considered one of the greatest players ever. Jerry West only won one. But not winning multiple rings does not deter how great he was as a player. He is the NBA logo alone tells you how great he is. Oscar Robetson is another. Won only one. But try to come up with even one player who can average a triple double in a season let alone almost a career.

While championships cements your greatness, it does not define a great player. John Stockton who never won a ring I consider the 2nd best PG of all time. His assist and steals record as it is seem untouchable. Last time I checked, I believe Jason Kidd is second but close to 4,000 behind. And with his career winding down, won't overtake Stockton.  Among active players, Nash is still about 5,000 away. Won't get there either.  As for steals, Stockton is still ahead of Kidd by about 600. Among active players, next is Kobe behind about 1,400.  So nobody is breaking both records.  Is Stockton a great player.  I believe he is.  Does not winning a championship deprive him of the accolade of being a great player.  No it doesn't. But it would have enhanced the resume of an already great player.

Truth be told, anybody given the right situation can win a ring....Jack Haley, Mengke Bateer, DJ Mbenga, Earl Cureton, Chuck Nevitt, Adam Morrison, etc. But not anybody can just win 3 MVPs, be All Time leaders in statistical categories, average a triple double in a season or even be the model of the NBA's logo.  Record holders like Stockton, 3-time MVPs, triple-double average for a season players cannot be overshadowed by not winning a championship or winning just 1 ring.

he is a great player but he is not the best just because he has 11 rings, he just had the best team during that time. MJ is still GOAT because he brought the game of basketball to greater heights.

Well if you want to know what Greatness is, well......

Tim Duncan is a good example.

Nothing fancy, But the Spurs are the team with the best win percent (around 75%) since Tim Duncan came to the NBA, and that is not in the NBA alone - That is in all of professional sports in the USA.

MVP - Done, All Star - Done, Championship - done, Leadership skill is there, and the his team is still winning.

Best of all - he just plays good basketball (night in and night out) and never lets his ego get in the way.

Boring - Maybe, Great - Definitely.

As for the best player - I dont know if one person deserves such a title.
Most gifted and athletic (today) - I think Lebron wins this hands down.

Cheers :)

ahhh ok ok... Kobe has 5 Lebron only 1... Kobe is greater than Lebron... agree agree :)

i never questioned kung sino mas marami singsing o sino mas magaling... ang sabi ko lang na-achieve ni Lebron ang hindi kayang ma-achieve ng isang buwayang player (Kobe specifically)

balikan ko lang yong post mo

==> ahhh hindi sukatan ang bilang ng singsing sa kadakilaan ng isang manlalaro... tsk tsk laging singsing ang bottomline he he he...

To many people...yes he is. He even became a playing coach in one season. Same result = Ring. That is why the NBA Finals MVP Trophy is named after him.  He may not be a scorer or a dunker like Jordan, LeBron or Kobe. But his leadership is unparalleled.

natumbok mo..  :)

Championship rings, IMO, define first and foremost, the greatness of the TEAM followed by the greatness of a certain player during a specific era.  It can't be an individual player only because basketball is a team game.  Bill Russell's Celtics had players like Bob Cousy, Sam Jones, Don Nelson & John Havlicek.  Jordan had Pip, Kukoc, Rodman, Armstrong.  Kobe had Shaq, Or Shaq had Kobe (depends which side you're on).   And don't forget the coaches.  It's always a team effort when it comes to winning championships.  The individual greatness of a player, sa tingin ko, must be measured by stats and his impact to the game.  Barkley, Stockton, Malone, Reggie, Drexler were all great players but have zero rings.

Portland about to lose 98-60 vs the Pelicans.  34 seconds to go in the 4th.

Portland will tie LAL for 9th spot ::)  Hope LAL wins tomorrow vs Clips for a more decent standing before the All Star Break (9th is better than 10 right?)

Nash is indeed a great player.  A 2-time MVP and Part of the 50-40-90 club.  Only 5 of them in NBA history.

Agree to a certain extent but then again, not because you didn't win a championship or you've just won one doesn't make you less if you really are a good individual player.  As pointed out earlier, Jerry West "only" had 1 ring.  Julius Erving also has 1 ring.  To say that Karl Malone and John Stockton "sucked" because they have no rings would be grossly unfair to their achievements.  And the Wizard's failure to reach the playoffs twice despite having Michael Jordan doesn't speak less of Jordan's greatness too.  Jordan at 40 then can still mix it up with the young guys. Jordan ended the season as the only Wizard to play in all 82 games, as he averaged 20.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals in 37.0 minutes per game.He even scored 40 at one game making him the only player to score 40 at age 40.  But he was surrounded by a bunch of mediocre players, that's why.   Nobody is saying Jordan was a failure.  It's still a team game after all.

Again, no matter how great a player is, kahit pa gaano kataas ang stats mo, kung hindi mo pa rin makuha ang sinsing, it will always be a blemish to that player,.. Dami nilang magaling, pero bitin pa rin,..
Barkley, Ewing, Malone,.. All superstars in their time, pero kulang pa rin,... Yun pa rin ang sukatan nyan talaga,.. Championship pride,... Championship ring,...

nakuha na naman ni LJ6 yon and still counting of which I wanted to witness yong huling sinabi nong napunta sya sa HEAT... not 1.. not 2, 3 ,4, 5 ....

I would say mas bigger chances yan to get those number pag mapupunta sya sa lakers hehehe... hoping coz I'm a LAKERS fans.

iyon nga lang that time nilagay na ni LJ6 sarili nya sa pedestal... as NBA fans at most of NBA fans wanted to witness yong pagbibilang ng sisiw ni LJ6 :D

^^dpogs - bakit mo naman naiisip yan => know the difference between the word "magaling" at "dakila" .. do you think kailangan alamin.. well you should look and find out the difference. ikaw na lang.. huwag na sa akin.. ;)

"Dakila" means noble right?

To the mere casual fans like you and me we may be jaded by stats and individual awards. Blake Griffin has amassed a ton of fans already from his unworldly dunks. He is good yes but does that define him as a player? I read an article once about NBA players that were gathered when they received the awards for the 50 greatest players in the NBA. Some of them with rings and some of them without. When Russel entered the room ALL of those players wanted to shake his hand and the respect that he commanded in that room was TOTAL. Bird was there and so was Magic, Jordan, Olajuwon, Malone, Stockon etc...you name it. He possesses something that no other man in that room has achieved. As a player its normal when you get the respect of fans due to your accomplishment but when you reach that level wherein you get the respect of your peers because of what defines you as a player then you can be considered as GREAT.

It is and has always been the measure of a team sport and that is winning the championship. I can bet that LeBron if given the chance will exchange those multiple MVPs that he won for multiple rings in a heartbeat.
