110V Onkyo plugged in to 220V. Still any hope???
« on: Nov 04, 2012 at 08:43 AM »
Someone in our house plugged in my Onkyo TX-nR807 to a 220V outlet, but it's supposed to be 110V. I smelled a burning scent when I turned on the system. Now it won't even turn on.

Is there still any hope for my system?

Try bringing it to Toyama for proper diagnostics...
Toyama is the official distro and service center for Onkyo.

Called toyama before reg the same issue. They said they can fix it but its going to cost abit more compared to servicing local units. For car audio pioneer also does the same thing (charge more for import units).

Kung umusok at amoy sunog, for sure sira ang standby transformer at regulator circuit nyan. For 230 volts conversion, it will cost you kasi standby and main transformer ang papalitan o ire rewind. ipaparewind na rin lang ng Toyama yan kasi shipping those trannies plus repair cost ay malapit na cost sa brand new unit.

Parang contradictory yun dalawang sentences mo sir... :D :D :D

Anyway, fuses blows when there is over-CURRENT flowing through them... what happened obviously was over-VOLTAGE. ;)

Sometimes. the insulators of house wiring melts but the house fuse does not trip, that's because the current rating is still within the fuse's limits. Kaya it's safer to over-spec the wires, with respect to the fuse rating, kaya lang alam mo naman mga contractors, meron mga tipid mode and nandadaya.

In this amp's case, best case scenario will be a fried varistor, and the worst case is juanbote's post. So to answer the TS's post, yes, there is still hope.  :)

Its confirmed bro, someone whom i sold a 110v unit asked me about this before and i consulted with toyama. They can fix it daw but the unit needs to brought to qc for inspection and pricing.

current is directly proportional to the voltage at constant load..palitan narin ng fast blown fuse para safe.
