Kobe has been averaging an annual salary of around $26M the last five years. His extension pays him about $24M a season....a 7% reduction is hardly a pay cut. Consider the average salaries of other top players at their position. Kevin Love the top PF earns an average of $15M. Howard the top center earns $21M. Harden the top SG at $15M. Chris Paul the top PG at $21M. Durant a SF at $20M.
I figure the argument of winning a championship comes into play. Well how can you argue against Lebron... the best player right now...at any position winning back to back regular season MVP, back to back titles and back to back finals MVP. He earns an average annual salary of $20M. And the same argument can be said when it comes to bringing business to the Heat organization.
Not to mention still the possibility of bringing more trophies to Miami.
So your paying $24M to a soon to be 36 year old player who can still play at a high level but no longer a difference maker in bringing a title to LA. But you also strip down your cap space to sign a marquee player. Not to mention that even if you do have the cap space, does that marquee player want to come to LA and be Kobe's assistant and go to scapegoat and is thrown under the bus the next 2 years and only gets to be the main man during the 2017 season.
