I am leaning towards the same thing for financial reasons.  Mas maraming teams ang magsasara I feel if ganun ang magiging format.  The weak east teams will never make the playoffs and won't sell tickets.  Fans would turn away because hindi pa nag uumpisa ang season, wala na kagad pag asa mag playoffs.

IMO, choosing the top 16 teams is better for parity in the long run. In the current format, 48-win teams like Suns keep getting lottery picks, while 38-win playoff teams in the east get left out. And the cycle keeps perpetuating itself, east keeps getting weaker, west keeps getting stronger...

Quote
How the draft lottery weakens the east

*The 43-win Utah Jazz missed the playoffs, but made the lottery, while the 38-win Milwaukee Bucks saw the postseason in 2013.
*In 2011, the Pacers won just 37 games and made the playoffs, while the Rockets won 43 and got a lottery pick.
*In 2009, the 46-win Phoenix Suns didn't make the playoffs, but the 39-win Detroit Pistons did.
*2005 saw the Timberwolves win 44 and make the lottery, while the Nets won 42 and didn't.
*In 2004, the 39-win Knicks and 36-win Celtics made the playoffs in the weak East, while the 42-win Jazz and 41-win Trail Blazers drew pingpong balls.
*In 2001, the 45-win Rockets and 44-win SuperSonics earned spots in the lottery, but the 43-win *Orlando Magic and the 41-win Indiana Pacers did not.

Those 42-, 44-, even 48-win Western Conference teams are getting an (admittedly slim) chance at the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. More importantly, though, they are absolutely getting a leg up on a better opportunity to collect talent compared to those Eastern teams which are losing three, five, or even 11 more games.

This discrepancy helps to reinforce the power of the Western Conference, while limiting the ability of the Eastern Conference to correct the imbalance.

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/65148/how-the-draft-lottery-weakens-the-east

As for ticket sales, Indiana is having their best season in years, but their playoff tickets are selling for reportedly as low as $9. If the NBA chooses the best 16 teams for next years playoffs,  those middling east teams will only temporarily get shafted. They will have a chance to better rebuild  their franchises in the long run because of their inclusion in the lottery. And maybe a top East team like the Pacers won't have to face an unmarketable team like the Hawks in the first round. Siguro pag Suns na ang ka-matchup, hindi na $9 ang pinakamababang tiket.

You make a good point.  In the long run good for parity in the NBA.  But will owners still continue to pour in money though for a franchise losing money until they get that parity?

But on the part of the Hawks though, I would hazard to guess kumikita yun arena with what seems like an upset in the making.  If the new format of the playoffs would be implemented, they wouldn't even be in the playoffs.  They wouldn't make this kind of money and we wouldn't be witnessing this upset of a series.

With your point though, maybe keep the playoff format but change the lottery so that the bottom 14 teams may participate in the lottery regardless if they make the playoffs.

The two most dysfunctional/least marketable teams just got sold at a very high price recently, mostly because of a very owner-friendly CBA and the growing popularity of the league. If even the league-worst Bucks can be sold for $550M, I'm not worried about the short term profitability of the league's worst teams. Mas importante yung long term profitability, developing a better brand/product through parity, getting better cable deals,  etc.

Sold recently
May 2013: Sacramento, $534 million
April 2014: Milwaukee, $550 million

compared to 2 years ago:
June 2011: Detroit, $325 million
October 2011: Philly, $280 million
June 2012: New Orleans, $338 million
October 2012: Memphis, $377 million

That's actually a good compromise. If the league won't change the playoff format, they should fix the lottery instead.

Many are hoping that Comm. Silver holds true to his commitment to closely review the playoff seeding system.

However, IMO the main reason for the East-West disparity all these years, has been the fact that most of the blue-chippers had somehow converged in the Western teams mainly through smart drafting & dealings by smart GM's ...... add the lure of Hollywood ..... add some stroke of luck.

SPURS losing David Robinson to injuries, having a losing season, then winning the draft lottery (Duncan) ....... SPURS with the foresight to draft low-picks Parker, Ginobli, etc ...... LAKERS bagging Shaq, LAKERS Jerry West with the foresight to trade for 13th pick (Bryant) ...... MAV's Donnie Nelson with the foresight to trade for an unknown German (Nowitzki) ...... TWOLVES McHale with the foresight to draft a player out of HS (Garnett).

Paul Allen defying the salary cap with strong T'BLAZERS teams last decade ....... same with Mark Cuban who has always spent for free-agents to go MAVS ....... some of the most heralded GM's resided in the West for a long time e.g. KINGS Petrie, SUNS Colangelo, etc.

The new CBA has done its job and is penalizing high-spenders (NETS are the exception, of course) ...... revising the playoff format would be another step towards more league parity.

^Isama mo na rin ang Jazz. Sloan kept the team competitive even after the Stockton-Malone era. They're actually the 5th winningest regular season team from 2000-2012, despite being in one of the leagues smallest markets.

Yup, isama pa nga ang post-Mailman JAZZ ........ I remember them going 41-41 in a season with friggin' Carlos Arroyo as their lead PG (!)

IMO it was one of the best coaching jobs ever by anyone.

NBA bans Donald Sterling for life, fines him $2.5 million for racial comments

Kudos to the new Commissioner for acting decisively on this. It may have been an *easy* decision to make, given that the evidence was overwhelmingly against Sterling. But Sterling deserved to be punished severely and good thing Silver made sure of that.

This just made the GSW-LAC series (and the game later at Staples) more interesting than it already is.

on the contrary it might motivate them knowing that the league is trying to get rid of sterling as an owner.

Ban for life for a team owner maybe too harsh.
Demanding and public apology plus the hefty 2.5M fine (why not make it 3M$ anyway) and suspension for attending NBA games for 2 - 3 years should already be fair enough as punishment for Sterling's comments.

So what happens to the Clippers team? Does this mean Sterling should surrender ownership to other individuals interested to purchase the team for next season?

Btw, why was there no punishment for people cursing Presidents of a country and the action of burning flags of respective countries in public during protests and demonstrations?

I like the Wizards' chances to play Miami in the eastern finals.
Should they finish the Bulls today, and the Hawks knock out the miserable Pacers then the Wizards definitely have the edge playing the Hawks in the semis.

this is a whole different issue though. not really comparable to being a big racist bastard. I mean, he has black players and he probably thinks of them as his slaves or something. that's a huge no-no in the USA now.

It may seem harsh but I bet the NBA was just waiting for this opportunity where they have concrete evidence against Sterling. He has been known to be a racist but no evidence as big as this one came out before.

btw, here's something I remember from before:

Quote
"While ignoring my suggestions and isolating me from decisions customarily reserved for general managers, the Clippers attempted to place the blame for the team's failures on me," Baylor said in the declaration. "During this same period, players Sam Cassell(notes), Elton Brand(notes) and Corey Maggette(notes) complained to me that DONALD STERLING would bring women into the locker room after games, while the players were showering, and make comments such as, 'Look at those beautiful black bodies.' I brought this to Sterling's attention, but he continued to bring women into the locker room."

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Donald-Sterling-allegedly-acted-terribly-in-the-?urn=nba-304544

haha kagulo to si Sterling.
