Don, aka smoking-amp, updates his list of power tubes, i have the "audio power tubes" boldened,
as you can see those tibes would be in the bottom of the hierarchy of tubes based on cathode
capability (transconductance).....
so can you blame me for hoarding tv scanning tubes?  8)  :D

7403 update.....
improving upon the issues i was having with the input stage...
i decided to replace the 6J32/EF86 with the 12at7 in an aikido configuration....
B+ of 400 volts and 2mA.....
this is going to be a final na for this amp...
lessons learned here will be used in my next SET builds, the 4D32 SET...

this is the circuit for those of you who want to try....
cathode followers used to isolate the input aikido and make it do its "thing"...
not bothered by the miller of the output tube....

without fear, i can definitely say that the 7403 is a poor mans' 300B, very good all around....
those who would like to hear this amp up close and personal, my official amplifier taster, remington
will take this amp to drive his AN speakers and find out.....i hope he returns a favorable verdict...
but if not, then there are always room for improvement.... ;)

Let us talk triodes

ever wondered why many prefer to use triodes instead of pentodes in a single ended amp?
partly because triodes are more linear than pentodes, and the reason for that is,
local negative feedback is already built in with triodes....
with triodes there are two ways to control plate current...
one is by grid voltage and the other is by plate voltage..
mu tends to decrease with increase in plate voltage,
while plate resistance increases with increase in plate voltage...
with triodes, mu and plate resistance are affected by plate voltage,
while transconductance is affected in direct proportion to cathode current...

so where is all this leading to?
a few years ago, i purchased 20 pcs of 21HB5 compactron tv tubes...
as you can see from above heirarchy of tubes, this tube promises to
be even better than the 6AV5 wich have proven to sound good triode wired...
so i picked up my pen and paper and did some rough calculations...
what if i use 10 of these, five bottles per channel?
this tube is rated for 18 watts in a horizontal scanning duty,
but this tube can do more, so that running then at 18 watts is no
big deal, 5 of them paralleled can run 90 watts, so that 20 watts of power is possible,
perhaps more...and considering that these are U$1 tubes...
an added bonus is that just over 300 volts of B+ is required,
no scary voltages need be used... 8)

intermission please, this is a solid state amp designed by Danny Eulogio,
a Pinoy engineer based in Seattle, Washington and in collaboration with Dandy F. Menor of
Baguio came up with a board design, they now sell kits of good quality parts and very low cost..

some progress report...

resistors are lifted off board by about 1/16 inch so as air can circulate freely..

one board almost done, used shrink tube to physicaly couple input ltp trannies..

two boards done....

with a heatsink, both board assemlies will share a common heatsink..

I have corresponded with Patrick Turner on several occasions,
just as i thought he has retired, he comes up with a 100 watter mono blocks amps....
http://www.turneraudio.com.au/100w-monobloc3-2014.html

looking at his output transformers, i wonder, to what standards do commercial
offerings refer to? i have seen branded KT88 tube amps using 1 inch cores... :o
i asked him why re readily gives away his designs, he said, even if he does, he is not sure how others will do his opt... 8)

UL triode wired amp using kt120...

but notice his OPT, 2 inch center leg stacked 2 inches, now where to get M6 cores?

but notice his OPT, 2 inch center leg stacked 2 inches, now where to get M6 cores?
Edrel has some Z11 but 1 3/4.....

Sir Tony... Type ko sana ung maraming KT88 kaso wala akong makita n schematic...

if you noticed it, the 6L6, El34, 6550, KT88 have the
same pin-outs so you have a lot of choices..
just jumper pin 1 and 8 and you are good to go,,
you can use the same circuit i posted above...

the above topology is what i use when doing power amps
of more than 30 watts, Patrick turner seems to like it...
it was borne out of the mullard 5-20 input and phase splinter topology..
many amps used the same like harman citation 5, and even the carver silver 7....

90% of tube amps is the output transformer...
get the OPT right and you can have a mighty fine tube amp..
you can ask Edrel to make one for you using M6/Z11 cores,
i am willing to help you out should you decide to build one...
KT88's can now be purchased localy at a very reasonable price...
