Sir Joey, the sibelius are sure damn pretty speakers made of french oak & they use MA drivers but they are not pensils, notice how high the drivers are to the top?  they are quarter wave v horns which requires acoustic stuff lining on the "V" (like the frugel horns) while the pensils are an MLTL derivative & will benefit more from stuffing. I have asked Scott Lindgren (pensil enclosure designer) the same question, he doesn't recommend lining the walls but I still did it but just at the back of the driver to diffuse air when bouncing back. YMMV.

On stuffing, the more you put inside the enclosure the less bass you will get but brilliant highs are pronounced, while less stuffing means more bass but tamed highs. Experiment to suit once taste  ;) I think I have adjusted the stuffing in my pensils 7 times from day 1

Yes in the process na but stuffing needs to be lined on the walls and not to fill the entire volume.

Came across full range speakers from Pearl Acoustics and was inspired by its specifications and claims to play any genre.... http://pearlacoustics.com/the-sibelius.php

Awesome looking pair JoeyGS. I'm sure they look glorious in person. Seeing these and deist's speakers are really inspiring.

But his drawings indicates provision of stuffing

Polyfill lining/stuffing for proper tuning as indicated by the designer of the Pensil R70.3 box.......

Mark Audio update..... Tuned to lovely mids and sweet highs and tight bass. Only one driver was powered and the other is passive. Can extend bass by removing stuffing but mids and highs will suffer. Put in a sub and let's party.....

BTW, one driver is passive per channel in initial test. Powered both drivers per channel, can dispense with the sub......

I suppose the undriven speakers are acting like passive radiators. Of course with lighter damping. You may be able to tune bass by restricting the ports below while still having the ported effect with the "passive radiators." Not necessary but yet another opportunity to fine tune.

Ended up with driving both drivers.  Bass quality is at its best, tight and tuneful with dynamic and impactful SPL.  It may not have the 20hz bass but for most music genre I would say you'll be very satisfied.  For the 30hz and below bass, the duty of a sub can be called for to complete the entire frequency range. To my ears I can dispense with the sub.....

From the reviews, its true that you can play with any genre you like......

I can say that this will go side by side with my Magnepan SMG-c.  The mids and highs is not far from the Magnepans SMG-c.  The Mark Audio / Pensil combo has more low frequency range than the Magnepans SMG-c.  This speaker will be a keeper. (baka time to dispose na my other speakers.....)

Sir Joey, here's a sample pic of "lining" & "stuffing" in one enclosure:

the blue/grey wool felt is the "lining", permanently attached to the enclosure walls while the white polyfill is the "stuffing", amorphous mass spread throghout. I don't know who came up with the terms but that is what I regularly see diyers use, it sure is confusing but like what we have discussed; experimentation is the key & that is where the enjoyment is in doing it yourself ;D

But his drawings indicates provision of stuffing

Guys, this comment alone is a solid testimony to MA drivers' capability. Congrats again sir Joey. time to relax & enjoy the music  8)

Have been running my Pensil R70.3 box with dual Mark Audio CHR70.3 drivers and now at 150++ hours.

My my ...... it's still improving ..... gain increased as drive-ability is more at ease, level of detail increased, more dynamics and bass!

Bass seemed to be between 30-40hz ..... subs are off now.  Cymbals and drums are more organic and raw in sound.  I can feel the SPL and dynamics of bass frequencies for such small drivers.......

It sounds wonderful. Bass images must be spot on. I am amazed it can extend either end. That's what you get when you do very good homework and have an excellent study partner.

sir madyaw,

the #1 reason why i bought AMX Aria is for economic reason.

i have Topping TP-20 Mark2, used it to drive MA Chr70a.3 during burning-in period & for low volume listening. SQ is pretty good up to 11o'clock, beyond that, it doesn't have enough juice to drive the speakers to it's potential. I have also AMX Forte Tungsol 6550, but it's overkill not to mention the power it sucks from meralco.

enter AMX Aria EL84, 4-5watter SE amps. max i can turn the volume knob is 9.5o'clock, otherwise it'll overdrive 4incher drivers. SQ, nice mids, sparkling highs and solid bottom end.

now i understand what master tony is always saying "i stopped counting watts & started enjoying the music"

i think this pairing will last 'til the next project -Alpair 10P....

thanks for asking.

fred
